Motorbike around Vietnam villages

by StephanB

The larger cities in Vietnam can be a little intimidating for an inexperienced motorbike rider, but for the smaller towns and villages, it's the best way to get around. You get to meet more people and see more places. Make sure you check the bike out first so you don't get hassled upon return. Even take a digital photo so there is no confusion as to damage to the bike. Remember, in Vietnam, you pay or don't get back your passport/visa.

Chinese Junks

by muddybok

Chinese Junks at Ha Long Bay enhanced the looks of Halong formation.Packages to Halong Bay from Hanoi are probably the easiest, although you might save a few dollars by arranging your own transport & Chinese Junk fees.In fact Chinese Junks at Ha Long Bay was my only motivation to visit Vietnam before i actually set my foot on Vietnam. I still remember how I fantasize the great feeling about cruising the green water with these junks. Anyway, Vietnam turns up to be much better than just cruising the Ha Long on one of these Chinese Junks. Is like receiving big bonuses when you least expected it.

Cyclos

by muddybok

Cyclo (pronounced sit-lo), is general quite inexpensive & good mode of travel in Vietnam. It can be quite scary when the cyclo is cross the busy round about or busy junction. All vehicles seem to coming your way and you're in front of the cyclo’s cyclist.Do remember to negotiate prices before jumping into one.My personal feel is cyclo is a must-try-once-when-you-are-in-Vietnam kind of transport, but this is not the safest mode of all. The passengers are sitting in front of the cyclist, any collision will affect the customer more than the rider. And the chaotic street scene will make you think twice after the first ride.

Getting around

by MickeH

One of the problems we had expected when planning this trip was getting around in Vietnam. But there are loads of travel agents offering trips to most any place you'd want to go. Among the most famous is Sinh Cafe, but there are many others as well. The cheapest way to get around is by bus. We traveled from Saigon to Dalat and on to Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue and Hanoi by bus. And while there are no trouble getting around I should perhaps offer a little warning on the standard of the buses. They come in three different kinds. If you are unlucky then a soviet bus comes along to pick you upp. Don't expect to comfortable. If you have more luck then a chineese bus comes. They are ok, but not more. The best thing though, would be a korean bus. But you never know in advance, so keep your fingers crossed. We had a really rubbish bus taking us from Hue to Hanio, not a fun trip, let me tell you.

Vespa

by muddybok

This is some personal collection. But Vietnam motor-taxi is widely available to fetch tourist for a small fee.I took this picture was because the bike is very well kept and it makes me recall my dad's Vespa when I was still very young. I also remember my dad's 2nd (or 3rd) Vespa when I was eligible to ride bike (with license) and I often able to do low wheelie with its really powerful thrust and I happened to like its handgears that leave my leg so free beside using it for starting the bike.

Train to Lao Cai (Sa Pa)

by AutumnYellow

I found a very valueable web page on train to Lao Cai that will bring you to a town called Sapa (which I will be travelling in May). Basically, there is one overnight train (Train # LC1) that leaves for Lao Cai from Hanoi at 22:10 and arriving in Lao Cai the next morning at 07:20am. From there, I heard that you must take a minibus to Sapa. The return train from Lao Cai to Hanoi (Train # LC2) will departs Lao Cai at 19:00 and arrives in Hanoi the next morning at 04:00.Well, I al going to try this our in May 06 and will update this tips if there is any changes.

vietnam arilines

by raphaellecrevet

I reserved a few flights with them. Make sure you reconfirm your flight as the times can vary. I had just bought on a wednesdaya flight Hanoi-Hue for around 50 dollars to fly on the friday, already reconfirmed by the agency. The flight was at 7h00 but when i arrived at 5h50 i discovered the flight had been changed to 6h30 so i has just enough time to check-in!Security is good, modern planes, good service. The only thing i didn't like is for the flight Saigon-Siem Reap (Cambodia) we had a small propeller plane and there was a storm, wind and lightning when we took off so we got a little bit shaken but that is due to the size of the plane. on the way back we had a large plane so no problems.

Cab ride as a blood sport

by meccostaud

OK, I thought that our harrowing bus rides on Bali were as close to Mad Max in Thunderdome as I'd ever get. WRONG. Our drive from the Da Nang airport to The Victoria Hoi An was nerve-wrecking. I'd never been carsick before but our driver came close to wearing my breakfast on the back of his head. Weaving, honking dodging oxen, people, motorbikes, I still want to hurl when I think of that ride.

Metered Cabs vs. Motorbikes

by Firefighter1

While our guides suggested we use cabs, I found it much easier to use the motorbikes parked outside just about every hotel, bar, etc.Set your price before you get on. 10,000d should get you just about anywhere you want to go in Hanoi or Saigon. The bikes gets thru traffic alot easier than the cabs and it's alot more fun.
