(continued)7. "New friend story" tip. You meet somebody and after some time you learn that his sister does not have money to go to the university, or her mother needs to undergo an operation, or smth else that is very expensive. You are either explicitly asked for a small donation, or you are good-hearted and offer a donation yourself (and it is gratefully accepted). Be sure in 99.99% what you are told is a lie. What is correct is that these people really need money. But you never know whether the money goes to the operation for her mother (unlikely) or for a new cell phone (in which case you would not be as quick offering a donation). It is true though that Vietnam is a poor country and has a lot of people who need an assistance. But if you want to do smth about this better offer money to one of the non-government organizations helping them professionally. This is a much better...

(continued)5. Hotel cheating. You book one room, say with and AC, you pay and get another room, without an AC. Even though it was explicitly agreed on. Two things. First, in any hotel cheaper than 20 USD per night, look at the room first. Second, never pay anything in advance. Also, make sure whether a price for a single or a double room applies in your case - they can charge a double room price even if you stay alone in a room with one narrow bed.6. Tour cheating. With the exception of several highly reputable operators, like handspan, it is everywhere. You pay money, they tell you that lunch is included, and on the tour it is not included, and the tour guide ensures you it could never ever be included in the price and everyone knows this. Back in the city the tour agency is very sorry, but can not return your money. Internet is full of such reports. There are two ways out. Either never...

(continued)However, probably you do not want to be seriously cheated. Let us look what are the most common types of scam.1. No street vendor will sell you anything for the same price they do sell things to Vietnamese (let us call this the real price). However, the asked price can be anything - it could be five times above the real price, ten times, fifty times. The more the better. Bargain. It is good to bargain if you know the real price - it helps. However, even if you know it they usually as a matter of principle not sell you things for the real price. Still, you can bargain from fifty times real price to say two times real price. Do not forget that the thing you want to buy is most probably sold everywhere - if the vendor is stubborn just go five meters to the next vendor. 2. "Fifteen-fifty" scam. You agree on the price - 15 thousands dongs. You get to a taxi or motorbike or buy smth...

When you are in Vietnam, you will be constantly cheated. There is no way to avoid this unless you look Asian and speak Vietnamese. In all other case, you are considered to be a walking wallet in any place where they have ever seen a white foreigner. It is inevitable and there is no way you can get around it.On the other hand, this should not spoil your journey. If you behave correctly, you will be cheated may be by 20 US dollars in a couple of weeks. It is not really a big money for you, but really a lot for the Vietnamese. They cheat you not because they like cheating, but because they want money. Just accept it as an inevitable evil and do not have hard feelings - hard feelings cost you more than the total amount you are going to be cheated. In particular, you will be a constant attraction for all kind of motorbike riders, street vendors, restaurant and shop owners. Learn to reject...

General safety...

by rkhanen

To our experience Vietnam is very safe and we did not have one single bad experience. Like in any other country, and especially in cities, you should always exercise caution – mostly late at night. Don´t go home alone as streets can be very deserted, and if you are part of a group, look out for each other if there is alcohol involved. When in crowded areas always keep your belongins close, and when going out at nights consider one of you wearing something more practical with pockets that can be zipped. It keeps most fortune hunters away. Nha Trang Sailing Club should be notorious for it´s bagsnatching and pick pocketing, but don´t let that scare you off. Just be aware of your belongings and sourroundings in Vietnam and you should be fine.Female travellers may experience staring, following, grabbing, whistling etc. My girlfriend is 100% scandinavian – apparantly Asian men really have a...

Traffic Safety

by steven1117

Saigon and Hanoi, as with elsewhere in Vietnam, are full of motor scooters. Coming at you in ALL directions. It really is a free-for-all, with little regard to green or red lights, of which there are not many. It is feasible to navigate safely however. Just wade slowly into traffic, but look both ways, even if it is one way, just in case. As you manoeuvre yourself into the sea of traffic, do so surely, and confidently, but slowly is the key. The drivers will avoid you, not so much out of consideration for you, but for their own vehicles!Remember, he who hesitates is lost. Just don't stand still, and for god's sake, don't run, and you'll survive the experience. I found it to be a lot of fun, but it is awfully bad for the lungs.

Scam Airline Offices

by swervie

What looks like an official Vietnam Airlines booking office is just another "travel agency" who is marking up your tickets anywhere from 25% to 300%. These folks, located at 27 Ta Hien Street (right where it Dinh Liet St. runs into it) in Hanoi, sold us what we thought were two tickets on Vietnam Airlines for US $278. What we got were two tickets on Air Asia that we could have bought online (had we known) for US $110. When we went back to complain, they looked at us like we were crazy. For sure, we should have done our research, but it was 10pm and we had to leave for Ha Long Bay the next morning. Well, now you know. Take some time, check Air France, Vietnam Airlines and Air Asia's websites and print out the pages with the fares before going to any travel office, no matter how legitimate they seem.

Hard mattresses and pillows

by KhanhLy

One thing I couldn't wait to do was to sleep in a soft mattress and down pillows when I got home. Gone are the old days of sleeping on wooden beds and cots, but the matresses in Vietnam are not much better. I don't know about some of you that are sleeping in expensive hotels, but some of my friends that stayed in $80-100 a night hotels are still complaining about hard matress and hard pillows. I haven't heard anybody saying anything about soft down pillows in Vietnam!

TNK Travel tried to cheat me

by Chrissy76

I booked airlines tickets for domestic flights in internet throught a company called TNK Travel. I paid by a service called Xoom. Everything supposed to be ok. Xoom gives very detailed information about what is happening to the money. I got copies from the airtickets to my email from TNK and I had even time to check my visa-bill at home before my holiday. At the Saigon airport, the man was waiting for me with the tickets. After giving me them, he asked the payment in cash! Why?? He told his boss should have contacted me as there were problems with the money - they haven't got them. I had totally other information about that. I refused to pay, surely. Then the man asked, if I still have all the emails we sent with his boss. I had that information, and also all the Xoom-information. He agreed that I will send him the money when I'm at the destination where I was heading at. I sent email to...
