Malaria: Avoiding Being Bitten I

by lmviterbo

Body insect repellent. To avoid mosquito bites, dab or spray an effective repellent all over the exposed parts of your skin whenever needed. There are only two that really work. The most recommended one is DEET®, which only works at concentrations over 30%. It’s found in different brands of insect repellents. A newer repellent containing the active ingredient Icaridin (a.k.a. Picaridin or KBR or Bayrepel®) was developed by Bayer, who commercializes it only through its own brand, Autan® (previously, also based on DEET). They’re both effective if instructions are followed. You should apply a spray thoroughly and use a stick for small areas of skin like your face and neck. Read Bayer’s Frequently Asked Questions page about Autan and mosquito bites in general. Mosquitos bite mainly at the dusk and during the night, and are attracted to dark clothing. In rural areas, before booking any hotel...

Malaria: Intro

by lmviterbo

Malaria is a more serious subject. Although risk areas are rural areas only, you shouldn’t facilitate. As the MFI (Malaria Foundation International) makes clear, “each year, 300-500 million people become ill with malaria and several million die.” Vietnam is not Cambodia, in terms of risks, but nevertheless you should be aware of the dangers.Malaria is spread by mosquitos, so you should follow the two basic prevention guidelines: avoid being bitten and, just in case, follow chemical profylaxis. If you want to know it all, visit the CDC’s Malaria Information for Travelers to Southeast Asia.

Health Concerns

by lmviterbo

Overall, there’s no better online source of information on the subject than CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) page on Health Information for Travelers to Southeast Asia. Vietnam, however, is a reasonably health-safe country. For the majority of travelers, the only concerns should be traveler’s diarrhea and malaria .

Important: Vietnamese Money

by Maximilian21

Vietnamese Dong is virtually obsolete outside of the country and will not be exchanged for another currency. Before you leave the country you MUST change it into another currency if not you end up like me , having a wad of vietnamese cash and noone willing to exchange it. So before you leave the country exchange the money and youl be sweet.

Traffic

by Maximilian21

Motorist seldom stop at traffic lights so you need to be preety fearless. Most people in the coutnry ride motorcyles and its become a bit of a problem. In Hanoi alone they average about 20 fatalities from these things a day and ive seen one when i was there. It was not preety . If you do decide to rent a bike, be carefull

Being Followed

by seoulgirl

We were followed wherever we went by some military/government guy. One time I was writing an email and a guy was reading it over my shoulder, out loud! And...the cyclo drivers would call our room at the hotel in the early morning and want to know when we would be down. Very annoying. And wherever you go people will want to sell you something. They will sometimes sit right at your table with you. And they dont' go away when you buy something, more of them just come over.

Using the Post Office in Vietnam

by KhanhLy

Don't send anything valuable through the post office in Vietnam. Here in the US, you can buy stamps, put it on the envelope/postcard yourself and drop it off in the mailbox. Over there, they just take your money and put your postcard in the drawer. Well, I sent several of them home (all from same post office at Hai Van Pass) and nobody EVER got theirs. So, they might just pocket your money and never sent it out.If you need to send something important, UPS has an office in Saigon and Hanoi. It's quite expensive - about $120USD for up to 7lbs.,but it will get to the US in 3 days.

Pickpockets

by mad4travel

Watch out for pickpockets, expecially very tiny cute kids. Within 5 mins of leaving our hotel the first day we got there a small girl of maybe only 4 or 5 had accosted us trying to sell postcards and started hanging on the my friends combat pants. It was obvious she was trying to reach in to his lower side pocket.Take only a few dollars with you. Put the rest in hotel safety deposit boxes.

Picking your Pockets

by Gage17

Watch your belongings! A friend of mine was riding a cyclo (bicycle-rickshaw kinda thing) and two people on a motorcycle rode up alongside him. Before he knew it, the woman riding backside had reached over and taken his digital camera from his shirt pocket. This is but one of several petty theft issues to watch out for in Vietnam.

Crossing the Streets

by Gage17

Be mindful when crossing the streets in Vietnam's cities. There seem to be more motorbikes and cyclos than cars, and this makes for crowded and busy streets. It pays to look both ways, like your mother said, except do it several times!! Just look at the street sign here.... there's a reason those folks are running!
