I repeat, do not drink too much fruit wine

by richiecdisc

One of the few pitfalls of TM Brother's boat tour in Nha Trang was drinking a wee bit too much of their free homemade fruit wine. This was an interesting photo of D as neither of us remembers me taking it nor do we remember the hat in question! The fruit wine was pretty awful though it went down easily enough and remember, if you say no, it means you drink more.

Don't be terrified!

by we2364

I get this shot in Mui Ne. It seems like a little shop to make ice, which they make it from the moulded steel cube. As ice is required for cold drink to kill the heat, can you imagine this is the water you want to drink? But don't be terrified. Before I get this shot, all of us drink cups of cold drinks and we are all fine afterwards. So the conclusion is made: If you get sick, you get it at the first drink. If you don't, you should be completely fine with the local resource. And it's the fortune of you that you can enjoy everything here!

Value Your Money

by galy

Be careful, the 2,000 Dong bill and the 20,000 are quite similar. While they are in good shape, you can easily see that the 20,000 is bluish and the 2,000 is pinkish, but as the get used and crumble, they tend to get a more purple tone. On the front side, is the old man with the beard, and on the backside, on both notes, there are women working in some factory. On other notes, on the backside, you can see Elephants, Pagoda, Electric poles... very different from these two

Pick-Pocketting

by galy

Beware of pickpocketing. Although people are very nice and there is no feel of danger in the streets,(or maybe because of that we became careless) we succeded to loose about a 100$ this way in one insident in the crowd in Hanoi.

road traffic

by rob12c

be careful when crossing any road. The traffic in Saigon is the worst i have ever seen in my life. There are motor bikes everywhere and going in all directions. It makes crossing the road very dificault.

Be careful crossing the street!

by MParent

I did not believe this until I saw it. You must cross the street very slowly. Often, there are intersections without traffic lights or stopsigns, let alone crosswalks. The motorbikes go flying past and at first its scary. Our instinct is to cross quickly before the light turns, but in Vietnam, you need to do it slowly so they motorbikes will see you and drive around you.

Curfew and or closing of hotels/guesthouses @nite

by ihaveataste4danger

Make sure you know where your guesthouse/hotel is because sometimes after 12pm they close their iron gates and its very hard to tell which one is yours, as well as you will need to knock to be let in under certain circumstances

Customs officials

by mnhaus

As a caucasian, I had no problems with the customs officials. If you are Vietnamese and living outside the country, you may encounter some mild harrassment at customs. It was recommended by a friend to place a couple of small bills in the passport to ease the process. The officials will usually shake the passport to dislodge to bills. I don't know if I would recommend this. Otherwise the alternative is to play dumb with them and pretend not to understand.

Pickpockets

by Ewingjr98

I almost had my pocket picked once in Ho Chi Minh City after dark. Two women acting like hookers approached me from either side and started touching me with their hands. Next thing I know, I feel a tug at my wallet. Luckily I had a button on that pocket and it was buttoned.

Those of you who have been to Vietnam know that when you stay in a hotel, you have to fill a POLICE FORM in. This is also the case when you stay at people's home. However, if you stay with locals, you don't have to worry because they will report you to the police automatically and will make you fill in the form if need be. NOW, if you stay with expats, make sure that they reported you to the owner of the house they rent. The owner has to report you to the police then. (In big cities, this does not seem to be so much of a rule, but in small provincial cities, do it or your friends may be in trouble
