Treat in the sea moon: Palolo

by sennaya

At the special time out on the coral reef at night. There will be a great commotion and many lights out in the water. Sau ai Palolo! Deep in the coral lives a segmented sea creature that looks like a long piece of sphagetti. It can be blue or gold and they rise to breed only twice a year. Reach into the water with your fingers outspread and bring the palolo to your bucket. The longer the creature, the better. They break easily, so be gentle. For the best treat, you pop them into your mouth and enjoy. You can make someone real happy to bring them some fresh palolo. It must be eaten right away or frozen quickly for the future. Palolo left in the bucket will turn into a clear mass of small segments. You have to eat Palolo, it is a unique seafood that only comes twice a year and you are unlucky to miss it.

Va'oto Lodge, Ofu Beach: Dine at the world's best beach!

by ollyf

This is not so much a restaurant as a communal dining facility in the lounge area of the Va'oto Lodge accommodation. You'll probably be staying here if you're dining here, but it is open to non-guests. Breakfast, lunch and dinner or all served at regular times, with everybody eating together at one big table. What food you get depends on what is available on the day, but it's always good. You'll almost certainly be dining with a mix of interesting academics and adventurers. Lunch sets up a perfect afternoon of swimming and snorkelling at the beautiful Ofu Beach, which in turn will work up a heart appetite for the evening meal.If you're staying at the Lodge, your accommodation price will include three meals. Otherwise, you can negotiate a price per meal if you're a non-guest.

Generous portions, tasty food, nice surroundings, friendly staff, good location. Also a bar and, on weekends, a nightclub after 8pm. Complimentary tortilla chips with any main meal.
