Yep It's a busy place Ofu Airport Terminal! by Groverdean Well flying with Inter Island Air is a definite experience. Based in Pago Pago, apart from flying to Ta'u and Ofu in the Manu'a islands they also fly to Apia. In getting to Ofu Island where the winds are a bit tricky for a small aircraft, they changed my outbound flight day altogether and I was fortunate enough that they put on a new flight a day earlier which had one seat left so I changed to that one. On the return leg, I was waiting for them to call me over to the plane so I could board, but then the pilot closed the passenger doors and jumped in the cockpit! I had to run out waving my arms for someone to notice. Fortunately they did and I eventually got on. Make sure you let them know early on the day that you intend to fly (no matter if you think you may be confirmed!) at the terminal if coming from Ta'u or Ofu or else they won't think you are travelling. Flight times also change at a whim so be prepared! They operate two aircraft - a 6 seater and a 15 seater which I travelled in both. The journey takes about 30-40 minutes to Ofu in the smaller one and 20-30 mins in the 15 seater. Cost from Pago Pago to Ofu Island return is expensive at 140 USD return. You will need to be flexible with this airline as they are still only new. I suggest if coming from far away contact them first. Details on the website below. Leave a Comment

Local Bus on Tutuila - American Samoa by Groverdean If you have the time, the colourful privately owned buses are an extremely cheap way of getting around Tutuila. The most you can expect to pay for a fare is around 2 USD. They leave from the main Fagotogo market near Pago Pago regularly. If you don't have the time hire a car, or go with a tour company to see Tutuila. When I arrived in Tutuila it was in the middle of a morning of excessive rain which meant I lost a good part of the day for sightseeing, due to roads flooding. I snapped this picture of a bus as we drove through some floodwater. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The Bridge Between Ofu & Olosega Islands by Groverdean Simple! The islands are 137 metres apart however, they are joined by a hurricane proof bridge. Sea swells can rise quite high when hurricanes hit so the bridge and it's approaches are designed so the water will wash straight over it. The bridge caters for one lane of traffic and you can easily walk across it. If you are game you can jump off it, a popular past time for the local kids. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

My Feet In American Samoa In The Back Of A Pick-Up by Groverdean With approximately 7 miles of road in the 2 islands you can easily access everything by walking. Alternatively, the Vaoto Lodge will let you hire their truck out for the day. Another option which I preferred was just hitching a lift in the back of a pick-up. All vehicles on the 2 islands are pick-up trucks, and hitching lifts, whether you're a tourist or a local, is commonplace. Sometimes however, a vehicle may not come past for an hour or two so still be prepared to do some walking! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

The Runway At Pago Pago Airport by Groverdean The Capital of American Samoa is Pago Pago. The airport is located at Tafuna which is about 20 mins drive from Pago Pago. The airport code is PPG. I flew with Polynesian Airlines from Apia to get me there and back. They fly this route several times a day. Other airlines who will get you to American Samoa include Hawaiian Air and Air New Zealand. Inter Island Air are a relatively new airline that replaced Samoa Air. Samoa Air went broke in 2003. Inter Island Air fly irregularly between Pago Pago and Apia. Leave a Comment

Pago Pago buses by ollyf The buses around Tutuila (the main island of American Samoa, where Pago Pago is situated) are full of character; bright, wooden things with bizarre, old-fashioned structures. You might get on a bright green bus, or one with flames painted on the sides, or professional graffiti, and so on. The buses call at just about everywhere on the main roads of Tutuila and the driver can take you somewhere off the main route (within reason) if you ask, too. Prices are between 50c and US$2 or so, depending on how far you go. Pay the driver when you get off. Catch the buses either by flagging them down as they approach or at the main bus station in Pago Pago. Theme: Bus

I flew to Pago Pago from Apia in independent Samoa with Polynesian Airlines on board a tiny 19-seater plane. The journey is gorgeous, first flying over the rainforests of Upolu (independent Samoa) and then descending between the steep, volcanic mountains of Tutuila (American Samoa). The journey takes about 35 minutes and costs SAT380 (£75) for a round-trip. You can also fly with South Pacific Express from Apia, or catch a boat, although I don't have those details. Internationally, you can fly to Pago Pago from Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines. Also, there is a boat between Apia and Pago Pago, but I don't know the details for this. Theme: Airplane

Taxis are cheap around Pago Pago, although not too plentiful (not like in independent Samoa, where they abound). A ride from the airport to the city centre (about 20 minutes' drive) will cost only about US$7. In most instances, you can take a bus for even cheaper (see that section), but at night, to and from the airport, or to destinations not served by the buses, the taxis are certainly cheap enough. Aiga bus by sennaya Buses run by various villages will pick you up and take you where they go. The fare is negotiated with the driver, and the palagi price can be higher, but it is a good deal and it is fun to hear the music, and see all the decorations on each bus. No two are the same.

Fly between Pago and the Manu'a Islands (Ofu and Ta'u airports) on the domestic carrier Inter-Island Airways, but book ahead as the tiny 19-seaters get booked up quickly. I flew from Pago to Ofu, but unfortunately can't remember how much it cost. It was affordable, though. Theme: Airplane
