Canberra Centre: Canberra's main shopping centre - expanding
This is Canberra's major shopping mall, situated in the central city (which is known officially as 'Civic'). Here you will find the two major department stores, upmarket shops, and shops of most national retail chains. There is ample multi-story parking in adjacent carparks, which are linked to the centre and a major expansion development of both shops and parking is currently under way. Outside (on the City Hill side) is the 'Canberra Times' fountain, donated to the city some years ago by the local newspaper.
What to buy: Nearly anything you need, though I don't know of a hardware shop here.
What to pay: Much the same as elsewhere - though watch for 'sales'.

Civic Centre: Civic Centre
Civic centre is a great place to do shopping in Canberra. The centre holds two major department stores, a discount department store, major supermarket and over 200 unique specialty outlets, restaurant and bars.
The city centre was officially established in 1927. It was meant to be called Civic Centre from Walter Burley Griffin's plan with a corresponding "Market Centre" located at what is now Russell, but Prime Minister Stanley Bruce vetoed the idea and it became officially known as City Centre, and the idea of the "Market Centre" was abandoned. However, City Centre is still most commonly referred to as "Civic".
