The Canberra Tours! This Canberra tourist bus service is what you can call a real tourist trap. All things they offer you can do by foot or by public transport. Its amazing they don't even offer you to see the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, the Canberra Deep Space Centre (also in Tidbinbilla) and not even mention the Telstra Tower; The Canberra tourist spot! What's more these places are not accessible by public transport! Lets hope they will change that in the near future, given this service has been in existence since March 2000. If you see the map (click to enlarge the picture) it can give you some idea how ridiculous this tour is. From the Melbourne Building (1) to the Canberra Casino (2) is only 10 minutes walk and be serious, most visitors stay in a hotel in the centre and a visit to the Casino is for me no sightseeing, but an evening out!
Dickson - Chinatown (4) is absolutely a place where is nothing to see except for Chinese New Year (I didn't even take a picture from it), although there are nice Asian restaurants (but you can find a lot in the city centre as well) and shops but don't expect a Chinatown like you see in Sydney or Brisbane. If you want to see it take the bus 51,52,56,39,80. If you don't go there to eat you are gone in 5 minutes. The Canberra Visitor Centre (5) is about 200 metres away from there (so go by foot or take the next bus) and offers you a lot of brochures of what to see and do in Canberra and districts (the shopping mall "Canberra Centre" offers you also a visitor stand on the ground floor). The Australian War Memorial (3) will fill up your day (sure now its getting 1/3
bigger) and is not worth to take the Canberra Tour for A$ 25 but use the public transport (bus 33 or 40) for A$ 4,40. Also National Library (8), High Court of Australia (9),
Questacon (10), Old Parliament House (11) and the Parliament House (12) will fill your day as well and buses 35, 36 and 39 brings you there and its even possible to visit Manuka (which is near) to have a dinner or a drink. As you see, everything can be done by public transport and most of them by foot as well. Biggest joke is from point 1 (Melbourne Building) to the Sydney Building (6) because its only 100 metres from each other!!! The Canberra Tour offers you also
special packages and then you will visit the Telstra Tower. For A$ 79,00 (5 in 1 package) and A$ 89,00 (6 in 1 package). I think you're better of with a taxi ;-) Also great: special offer to Gold Creek Village for A$ 69,00!!! By public transport A$ 4,40 with busses: 51 and 52 and jump off on Federation Square. For more info about public transport see under 'transportation > getting around'. To visit the
Canberra Deep Space Centre and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (we went by car) try out the Canberra One Day Wanderings with Gobush Tours for A$ 66 a person. Further information you can find in the city at the
Jolimont Bus Centre.
