Unfortunately, because of a combination of its position in a valley and the temperature inversions which develop inland in calm conditions, Canberra is prone to fogs on winter mornings: sometimes lasting until noon. This can cause havoc with airline services to and from Canberra, and is most likely in the period from May to August, on up to one day in three or four depending on the weather conditions. The weather criteria for aircraft to land are somewhat more stringent than for departures, so often the aircraft which have overnighted at Canberra are able to depart when the fog lifts a little, while other aircraft remain unable to land. If the fog persists as low stratus cloud, flights can be considerably delayed. This means that when you are planning airline travel to and from Canberra, it is wise to avoid bookings on morning flights and, in any case, discount seats are usually more readily available on mid-afternoon flights. If you must make a morning departure, try for the earliest flight because it is probable the aircraft will at least be on the ground and able to go when any fog lifts.

Canberra Airport by tiabunna Canberra is well serviced by airline flights by Virgin Blue and Qantas to Brisbane and Melbourne, with somewhat fewer flights to Adelaide. Qantas and Virgin have flights to Sydney. The locally owned Brindabella Airlines has flights from Canberra to Newcastle, Albury and Traralgon. Jetstar does not fly to Canberra, probably the only large destination it does not visit in the country (ask it's owner Qantas why). The new discount airline, Tiger Airways, also now flies between Canberra and Melbourne. The airport bills itself as 'Canberra International' but technical limitations would confine any international flights to relatively close destinations. In any case, no airlines currently provide international services from Canberra to even New Zealand, though the option is available to them. Updated 27 March 2008

We Canberrans love to laugh at our city's weaknesses. Our airport is "international" in name only. You cannot fly directly into Canberra on an international flight, unless you are Bill Clinton, in which case they will clean up the extreme ends of the runway to ensure Airforce 1 can land safely. To get into the city from the airport you have three choices: airporter bus (15 min trip departing hourly, stops at city hotels, $7 one-way $12 return); taxi ($20); or get collected by your friends (priceless). Canberrans generally choose to get collected. There is no train network in Canberra. Local buses operate to all suburbs, but not the airport. You can connect to the buses from the airporter stop in the city. Leave a Comment

Pic from:http://pics.blemings.org/gallery/bcbr2005 by oisha With several cycling fanatics among our politicians, the city has spent millions on an extensive bicycle path network plus on-road cycle lanes along arterial roads. Canberra is just hilly enough to keep our cyclists fighting fit. But if you prefer a more leisurely ride, there are some flat bits too. Like a circuit of Lake Burley Griffin, or the university, or the suburbs of the Inner North. A map of cycle paths is available from government shopfronts, tourism outlets and some newsgencies so you can plan your own tour. Bicycles can be hired on an hourly basis from Mr Spokes near the ferry terminal at Acton Park on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin. Or you can arrange a longer-term rental from Capital Bicycle Hire, Dial-A-Bicycle or Canberra Cycles. Even the YHA Youth Hostel can rent you one. Leave a Comment

Grey hound and Murrays are two renowned bus companies that ply buses to Canberra. You could reach Canberra from Sydney(starts from Eddy avenue in Sydney central) in 4 and a half hours by bus.The buses are comfortable and often if not always play a movie(so make sure you get seat closer to the front if you want to see the movie and go to the rear side if you dont want to watch it!)There are no refreshments sold on the bus,so carry a small snack if you must. There is a toilet in the bus. While buying tickets, try to go purchase it from the company counter directly and not from the tourist information centre,as it works out cheaper this way.The tourist centre offers a slightly higher price for the same ticket(guess it is their commission/service charge) Theme: Bus

It's a bit of a pain getting around Canberra because the bus services are few and far between. You may have to wait up to 2 hours at some bus stops. Taxis are too expensive to consider. The best way is to rent a car. The UBD Street Directory is an excellent street guide. Canberran roads are pretty easy to maneuver around anyway, because for the most part, Canberra has a pre-fab urban layout. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The climb up Mt Ainslie by kikili The view from Mount Ainslie on a clear day is beautiful . The climb is about 860 metres with some handrails. However if you are challenged in any way, there is vehicular access from the back.Picnic facilities at the top make this a great half day outing. The picture attached gives you some idea of the track to climb Theme: Car/Motor Home

Traveliing within Canberra without your own car is a bit difficult. However, there are buses that connect the different suburbs of Canberra. There are no trains within canberra.Taxis are also in plenty. However, the buses are convinient to go from one suburb to another, you might have to take a cab in case your destination is away from the bus stop.Canberra being a vast place, this makes sense rather than taking a cab to travel the entire way.Of course if you have a car,it is most convinient. There are many things to see in Canberra but if you are not certain where to start for public transport check out the schedule for the 34 bus. This one bus takes you near many of the sites you must see (Parliament, Old Parliament, the Library, the National Gallery, Canberra Museum, the National Museum, Lake Burleigh Griffin, etc.) If you purchase your ticket after 9 you can buy a "shoppers ticket" good until 4:30 for only 3.50. It also takes you to three of the best shopping areas in Canberra (Woden, Civic, and Belconnen) Leave a Comment
