  • In Canberra City there is a free shuttle service called the Downtowner which runs from Monday to Friday from Platform 5 at the city interchange in Alinga Street. The route covers the main business and shopping areas.

  • Well if you could ,go by car, its some 270km south west of Sydney. Takes some hours, but the views when you approach Canberra are really lovely.

  • Tip Rating:

  • By foot, bus or taxi are the best options. As Canberra has not a big centre you can do all things by foot. Visiting places, just take a walk and if its too far for you just take a the bus. Click here for bus timetables. Under 'Tourist Traps' I told you already a lot about which bus to take to where. Only thing to tell, the AU$ 4,40 is for off-peak hours. The off-peak periods are between 9am and 4.30pm, after 6pm and on weekdays, and all day on weekends and public holidays. But for that price you can jump on and off each bus you want to get. A single ticket for all zones cost you also AU$ 4,40 (1 hour transfer ticket available on request, at no extra charge) and you can ride in peak-hours, but think about this is a one way ticket. For an unrestricted all day ticket, this will cost AU$ 8,40. To go straight to all sightseeing take a look at this web page and as I told you before, there are no buses to Tidbinbilla, Telstra Tower or other Nature Parks. The best way to get there is rent a car or if you are with some friends you can consider taking a taxi (this can be expensive and inconvenient). The best thing to do is just rent a car. It's cheaper and you are more unlimited. You can rent a car by: Europe Car Rentals (1A, 74 Northbourne Avenue), Capital Car Rentals (Woden Transport Depot, Dundas Court) and with Thrifty Car Rental (29 Lonsdale Street). For Dutch (Netherlands) people Canberra is a real paradise. Canberra is superbly designed for the cyclist, with more than 300 km of bike paths criss-crossing the city. You can rent a bike at: Row'n'Ride (Ginninderra Falls, Parkwood Road via Macgregor) and with Mr. Spoke's Bike Hire (Barrinne Drive -near Ferry Terminal- Acton Park). Think about that wearing a helmet is imperative!

  • Tip Rating:

  • There are daily air, road and rail connections from all capital cities to Canberra. If Canberra is the next city you want to visit upon your arrival in Sydney then travelling to Canberra can be quite easy. If you are an overseas traveller your travel agent can organise a connecting flight on the numerous daily services through Qantas or Ansett airlines. These flights take about forty minutes. There is a daily rail service to Canberra and bookings are essential, this trip takes about 4 hours. I have been told that by locals that despite it being a comfortable ride, the rail can be sometimes unreliable with delays that the trip takes longer than what they say. The most popular way to travel is by bus, which takes about 3 and half hours. There are 3 bus companies providing this service. McCafferty's, Greyhound and
Murrays. Greyhound and Murrays provide 3 daily services each between Canberra and Sydney. Availability of seats fluctuate greatly so it is advisable to book well in advance especially around peak season though there can be no problem at other times.

Buses: Arrived via bus from Sydney.
  • Tip Rating:
  • We walked everywhere but if time is short, it is probably better to use the bus system which seems to go to all points of interest.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The bus service in Canberra is very good. It is basically the only way to get around as there isn't a train system.
Bike riding is a great way to see the sights and get around in Canberra. There is a great bike path system and you can basically get anywhere you need to go. You can get really cheap second hand bikes at Cash Converters but get a decent lock because bike theft is pretty common.

  • It is about two and a half hours from Sydney by road on a reasonably scenic expressway.
Driving is best, but Canberra also has an extensive cycleway network thoughout most of the city and surrounding areas.

  • Tip Rating:
  • It is possible to get to Canberra from Sydney by bus, train or car. The train costs about $60 return and takes 4 hours. There are 3 trains a day but beware they are often running 30 mins behind schedule. Buses cost about the same. A 2 day car hire from Sydney can be as little as $130.00 so if there are more than 2 of you this is definitely worthwhile. Canberra's public bus system appears good but services are not that frequent on weekends.
Canberra is primarily flat and is great for cycling. Its ok to walk around the main city area but if you have limited time you just can't seem to see it all. The bus company has a great web site.

  • Tip Rating:
  • You can fly to the Capital city, I just got a train (well, they say 'catch' a train), from Sydney. You also may get a bus or drive on your own, but train lets you watch the sights more comfortably (although you can't stop to get pictures :)
Caberra is pretty compact: you can walk around Civic (main 'live' centre) to see shops, bars and the like. For the rest, I recommend hiring a bike: it will allow you to visit all the city, parks and main spots in a day of riding. They have very good bike paths for that and you can park for free everywhere.

  • Canberra is only 3 hours from Sydney. There is a great 2-lane highway and it is very easy driving. There is an airport which is services regularly from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. There is a daily train service from Sydney. The bus service to and from Sydney is excellent.
Canberra has a great bus service - very easy to get around the city. You can buy a day pass or weekly pass - not sure how much - but will get prices.
