Traffic: Watch out!

In most of Australia, revenue-hungry governments have distorted the genuine need for 'road safety' into a motherhood justification for hidden radar cameras. The ACT is no better than other places in this regard and hides radar-equipped vans, usually on wide safe roads, in places where they cannot be seen until too late. The back of the van is usually toward oncoming traffic, so the radar can operate from inside the van without being obvious. They also operate at night, so if you are startled by a bright flash in your eyes, have your wallet handy when the bill arrives some weeks later. This is one of the vans, doing a PR exercise at a car show. Note the 'helpful' sign on top.

Visitors from overseas, or from Australia's large cities, may find the sight of kangaroos on the roadside exciting. Yes, they are indeed to be found on Canberra's urban fringes, or in the rural parts of the ACT. But if you are driving be warned: they are totally unpredictable. A kangaroo can do extensive damage to a motor car, so if you see one on the edge of the road slow down and be ready to hit the brakes hard - do NOT swerve the car to avoid an accident, that can often result in an even worse outcome!

    Politics: What about the politicians?
  • Tip Rating:
  • In total, the national parliament has under 250 politicians: even including their personal staff you have probably no more than a thousand people. And remember, if you're an Australian citizen and you're unimpressed by 'the Pollies', the people of Canberra didn't invite them: you're the ones who keep sending them here! . So when the media says 'Canberra (did something unpopular)', that is journalistic shorthand: it was the politicians (of whatever flavour is currently in power) who were responsible for the decision, not the citizens of Canberra. And isn't it curious that the media never says 'Canberra (did something popular)', in that case it's always The Government (of the time) which etc ...! Remember that, whoever you vote for, a politician always gets elected!

To be fair, I do not know of any Ministers (of different Governments) who were not hard working and committed to their tasks: the one with whom I worked briefly 'lived his job'. They also were very comprehensively briefed by their Departments. So it is a matter of their policies, and no more, whether or not you agree with their efforts. As a visitor to Canberra, you are unlikely to see any politicians at work unless you visit the parliamentary chambers while the Parliament is sitting - and if you can, try to be there for Question Time though you will need to book a seat.

    Traffic: Desperate drivers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Having 'bucketed' the radar traps, I should caution that Canberra's driving standards sometimes leave a little to be desired. Maybe because of the speed restrictions, the pressure on hurried drivers shows in other ways which the government makes little effort to control. Especially in the newer suburbs and in busier periods you can expect to be 'tailgated' and cut off in roundabouts (of which there are many). So drive carefully.

    Crime: Crime risks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Provided you exercise no more than normal common sense in crowded areas, pubs or clubs, especially late at night, you are unlikely to have any problems in Canberra. It is one of Australia's safest cities.

Wildlife: Kangaroos and Cars dont mix
  • Tip Rating:
  • Canberra is quite unusual in that encounters with kangaroos on the main roads quite close to the city are very commonplace. Alot of the main roads in the metropolitan area will also be marked as "high accident zone" areas due to the number of crashes involving roos. Be especially careful near dawn and dusk as this is the roo's most active time. The main arterial roads connecting the satelite towns in the outer suburbs are also well known for roos and in some areas, wombats.

Another area to watch out for are the roads leading up to the various lookouts surrounding Canberra. Some of the winding roads are marked at 60kph and 80kph speed limit but you'd be well advised to go under this as the roos have a nasty habit of hopping out from between the bushes right next to the edge of the road.

Also for those not familiar with roos on the road, don't swerve when approaching them. Apart from the fact that it's illegal, the roos have a habit of changing direction on you without warning. The best thing to do is slow down in a straight line and when safe to do so, dip your headlights to give the roo some chance of seeing which direction to head to safety. Don't drive past the roo until it's off the road or else you may find it turning around and jumping into the side of your car.

Sorry, no photos - too busy trying to dodge the roos with both hands on the wheel!

Crime: Canberra: Be careful in Public
  • Tip Rating:
  • Canberra is often touted as a quiet city. True, it does not have as much traffic, residents or commerce as, say, Melbourne or Sydney, but it does have its own dangers in public areas. I agree with the other writers on Canberra here. Drug addicts pose the most serious problem in Canberra. There are way too many junkies here. You see them everywhere, on the street, on the bus. All public housing apartments in Canberra are drug distribution areas, and these days the major players are moving into private housing complexes to avoid detection.

Watch out for junkies while driving. They drive and cross roads really dangerously. If you have an expensive looking bag, do not leave it unattended. If you have lots of money, do not let it be seen even in respectable places. If you smoke, do not display your pack of cigarettes. They're very fond of asking for cigarettes and spare change. Smokers on average get asked for cigarettes 3 times a day by junkies.

    Politics: Walking politicians
  • Tip Rating:
  • Watch out for this man. He's on Australian television everyday. What is he up to now? Sometimes you'd see him walking around the Lake with 6 burly guys in tow during the crack of dawn. Or you may even observe him in his elements at the House of Representative in the Parliament House.

Crime: It's hard to say, but again...
  • Tip Rating:

  • It's hard to say, but again syringes. The use of hard drugs in Canberra is the same as in most other Capital cities. Only difference, Canberra is getting drugs paradise. Dealers and users do what they want because the police are afraid to arrest someone. A cab driver told me the police was afraid to pick up kids from dignitaries as politician, ambassadors etc, etc. I noticed Canberra had clean public toilets last year (they were new!!!) now it is a mess. Be careful in public toilets and parks (Canberra has no beaches as it is a inland Capital) that you don't get in touch with syringes. Amazing that this spoiled youth only think about their kicks and not even use the syringes-containers (see picture) that's hanging in all public toilets, even in the casino. Yes, you read well, in the casino. I hear you thinking, which junkie has money (not even think about their dressing) to go to the casino? The dignitaries themselves? Sigh… Postscript... I hear police have introduced cameras in 15 spots around the busy area of Civic as part of their policing activity so maybe this will help.

Weather: The Winters are Very Cold
  • Tip Rating:
  • Canberran winters are the coldest in Australia and one of the coldest in the world. Don't let the temperature guide fool you. Wind chill is a major factor in winter here. Officially, it goes down to -15 Celcius in the middle of winter, but it does feel a hell of a lot colder than that. You have been warned.
