Accommodation

by ettiewyn

WHV HELPLINE Where do I stay??? is one of the most frequently asked questions in the forum, so I will try to write a general answer to this that might help you when you start to plan your Working Holiday trip. The most common type of accomodation among working holiday makers are backpacker hostels. You will find these all around Australia, in most of the cities and towns. Booking ahead is usual not necessary, except around christmas and new year.In these hostels, you sleep in dorms which means that you share a room with other people (there are dorms of three, four, six or up to ten people, rarely more than that). The more people there are in the dorm, the cheaper it is. You sleep in bunkbeds and usually there is no other furniture, sometimes you have a locker or a small shelf or table. In proper YHA hostels the standard is a bit higher, there you will usually always have a locker. In the...

How much money do I need?

by ettiewyn

WHV HELPLINEActually, nobody can tell you how much money you will need, as this depends very much on your personal situation. The Working Holiday Visa requires that you possess an amount of 5000AUD and I recommend that you REALLY possess this. Even if you plan to work very much and think that you won't need to take that much money, you can never be sure. Although of course I don't hope so, you could get sick and be unable to work or in need to pay doctor's bills (usually insurance only pay later when you hand in the bills), you might not find a job at once or not as well paid as you thought, or your plans might simply change and you want to travel more...Simply speaking: The more money you have, the more possibilities you have, and the more you can travel! The rule of thumb is to have about 1500 to 2000AUD per month that you don't work, but this excludes the expensive things like guided...

Working Holiday Visa

by ettiewyn

WHV HELPLINETo begin the WHV helpline for the Down Under Mob, here is some general information. If you have already decided to do a Working Holiday, you probably know most of this already! You can apply for a WHV if you are between 18 and 30 years old and are a national of one of the countries that have a WHV agreement with Australia. The visa gives you the possibility to travel around Australia while taking short-term jobs, thus ideally funding your trip through working. You can stay in Australia for up to twelve months, a second visa is possible under certain conditions. The visa requires that you possess an amount equivalent to 5000AUD. Of course there are more requirements, so check carefully if you really are eligible to apply!More information under the official link www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/417/To follow the Working Holiday Helpline and read about money questions,...

Job questions

by ettiewyn

WHV HELPLINEQuestions about jobs are probably the most frequent questions from Working Holiday makers we get in the VT forums, and of course it is only natural that you worry about this! Without job, no money - and without money, no travelling! So the questions are: 1. Will I get a job? How easy is it to get one?2. What kind of jobs are there?3. Where can I best find a job?*** 1. Will I get a job? How easy is it to get one?The job situation for Working Holiday makers in Australia is not as good as it was some years ago - as far as I can judge - but I think you have a good chance if you really look for one. Many people just sit in their hostel and complain that there are no jobs - but many are not really looking for one and don't really make an effort to find one. A good website is http://www.gumtree.com.au/ or another one, only for fruitpicking...

Montezuma Falls, Tasmania

by iandsmith

wound my way to Montezuma Falls carpark. I’d been there before but didn’t get to do the walk so I was really keen this time. As for the weather, most would have assessed it as perfect, but I really wanted totally overcast for rainforest photography. Too much contrast makes it so hard; still, I hope you enjoy some of the images. It’s a straight flat 3 hour return walk along an old tramway, built to retrieve ore from the many mines in the area. At times it's boggy so no surprise as you constantly hear the roar of the river in a steep canyon far below and the track has many flows that sometimes disappear underground, at other times cross beneath the boardwalk and often just splash onto the trail. You have to be careful not to stub your shoes on old spikes and sleepers but the beauty of the moss covered myrtle, tree ferns and hard water-ferns are a constant distraction.I went down all bar one...

Waltzing Matilda

by ettiewyn

Ok, if you have ever read a book about Australia or did some online research, you have probably already heard that Waltzing Matilda is the unofficial national anthem of Australia, and my personal feeling is that many people (including myself) have much more feeling for that song than for the official anthem. My first real contact with the song during my travels was when the children of my employers got instruments during our visit in Cairns (they were living in Cape York). We visited the grandparents and the first thing they said when they saw the instruments was: "Great, now you can learn how to play Waltzing Matilda!"You hear people singing it at sports events, it has been sung at wars in the past, and it was a pioneering hymn... Recently, it featured in Baz Luhrman's epic movie Australia, and I have heard such remarkable versions of it as a violin version by famous violinist André Rieu...

Narawntapu National Park

by iandsmith

The fickle weather had seen the low clouds break up and the wind moderate a little so I left the prolific bird life to their own and headed off to Narawntapu (that’s all right, I couldn’t pronounce it either) National Park where I was assured the NPWS office actually was. Though only a couple of kms as the crow flies it is a half hour drive around the estuary to get there and the office was closed anyway. OF LIFE AND DEATHI decided to do the Springlawn Nature Walk and thus tick my 19th box on the excellent “60 Great Short Walks” brochure. It goes to a bird hide deep in a swamp. It says it “meanders through a paper bark swamp forest along a raised boardwalk”. Turns out the total length of the boardwalk is around 50 metres of the 700 and it’s a sandy but firm trail where wildlife abounds, or should I say “bounds”, because Tasmanian pademelons were everywhere. By day’s end I’d lost count...

HOW TO FIND WORK IN OZ

by balhannah

WORK............It can be hard find, especially these day's.Work that is always available, is Fruit and Vegetable picking. It is hard work, you may be working through all weather conditions, and Summer's in Australia are HOT!Some places pay by the hour, and others are "piece' work. For other types of work, the website to check out is SEEK. This is the main one that unemployed Australian's use. The Employment Agencies now put their job's on this website.http://www.seek.com.au/jobsearch/A "friend" is the easiest way to find work, as Employer's no longer wish to sieve through up to a 1000 application's per position.

Benalla's famous museum

by iandsmith

The Benalla Costume and Pioneer Museum was founded in 1967 and is accredited through theMuseum Accreditation Program (Vic). It is the only public costume museum of its kind in Victoria. It is managed entirely by volunteer members of the Benalla & District Historical Society Inc. and is a splendid example of how the skills of an enthusiastic and talented group can produce excellence. The Museum is centrally located on the bank of Lake Benalla adjacent to the Ceramic Mural, and opposite the Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens. The Museum specialises in costume and local history, including much of the NED KELLY STORY, Australia's most notorious criminal. As Benalla is in the heart of Kelly Country, the KELLY STORY is given considerable emphasis. Here you will find a transportable prison cell in which Ned was once imprisoned, and it contains authentic memorabilia including Ned's bloodstained...
