Australian English - a historical perspective

by ettiewyn

There are already tips on VT about Australian slang words and distinct Australian phrases, and as I do not want to repeat that, I decided to give a language tip of a different kind: The development of Australian English. For a very comprehensive list of slang words, have a look at this list on the Down Under Mob pageIn the history of Australian English, the influence of London English was very strong, but also many other dialects influenced it, as of course people from many different areas in the UK arrived in Australia. About two thirds of the convicts who arrived in the 19th century were from England and Scotland, and about one third from Ireland. It is supposed that convicts from London were the most powerful group because many of them already knew each other and they also shared a common culture and dialect. There were also many young people from London who had more energy and who...

Ash Island - bird heaven

by iandsmith

Until I learn otherwise I'll claim this as Australia's greatest bird watching spot. The islands in the estuary, including Ash Island, were explored and surveyed by Europeans in 1801. Ash trees were abundant, with mangrove and swamp oak and species of eucalypt also recorded. Within about 20 years, most of the valuable timber, such as red cedar and ash (that gave the island its name), was removed from the island. In 1827, Ash Island was granted to Alexander Walker Scott. The grant included 2560 acres of prime land that retained much of its forest, despite losing its profitable trees, and would be a paradise to naturalists. He settled there in 1831 with his mother and sister, although shared his time between the island and other properties in the Hunter and Sydney. He made Ash Island his primary residence after his marriage to Harriet Calcott in 1846, moving there with her, his step-daughter...

Oatlands, like talking to a brick wall

by iandsmith

Weeding, no, that's not a verb, it's a proper noun. What the lady's doing is stoning. Please explain? So, one fine day in Oatlands a lady called Maria (something about her) decided that she would become the saviour of the fences - stone that is. Thus she taught herself about that grand traditional art of dry stone walling. In fact, she became so good at it that at least 13 other ladies in the town also became interested to the point where these days Maria Weeding and the resurrected walls have become something of a minor tourist attraction and received more than a little publicity along the way. So it was that I found myself looking at stones in a different light, though not all necessarily in fences (pic 2), and reflecting on their importance in our daily lives, as I'm sure Maria has done while choosing an appropriate slab to fill the latest gap.

Green Point - Lake Macquarie

by iandsmith

Situated between the quiet suburbs of Belmont and Valentine by the lake, the Green Point Foreshore Reserve has all the features to make it one of Lake Macquarie’s most scenic and enjoyable natural attractions for cycling, walking and picnicking.Originally the site of mining activities, first coal then as a quarry, over the past 150 years, the now Council Reserve is undergoing extensive rehabilitation works to establish it as one of Lake Macquarie’s foremost natural bushland parks. For a very short time a ship building enterprise was here but both its founder and financial backer met untimely deaths and it foundered within two years though much timber was taken from the area in the 19th century. The bushland at Green Point these days features much native flora and fauna, adding interest to the walk. The flora includes open forests of Spotted Gum, Grey Gum, White Mahogany and Forest Red Gum....

Seeing more of Australia from Sydney

by angiebabe

Hi, well info for Sydney theres heaps on the travel pages already made by VTers here...so I would recommend them to get some ideas from and the required info you want - Sydney was usually quite quiet at night and its knowing the particular locations of where to go for nightlife - such as up the telecom tower and what clubs are open - the restaurant and casino and so on...night ferry cruises are nice to do such as the ferries that go to ManlyAs for trips out into the outback - having a few months is an excellent opportunity - well the outback is a long way out...I used to live out there and you need at least about 15 hours of driving to get anywhere that looks like outback but it is worth it - and it depends which direction you want to go in - further out into New South Wales, into Victoria such as out to the Flinders ranges and up into Coober Pedy and Lightning Ridge, out along the Great...

Toilets

by balhannah

I have just returned from Europe, and one thing I found out, that is over there, Toilets are few and far between, and cost money for the pleasure of visiting. As I had an upset stomach in some places, this became a nightmare!!!Well, in Australia, you do not have to worry, in fact all of the Australian states have plenty of Toilets in Cities, and in Country towns, they are scattered about the place everywhere, even in remote towns. It is only a rare occassion that you may pay, 99% of the time you don't, THEY ARE FREE.And.........Often where there is a Toilet. it is located in a park, with gardens, sometimes lake, playground etc, here you can take a much needed rest from your travelsIf in the Outback, check the Hall, they often have a Toilet open. Service stations 99% of the time too, have Toilets that the Public can use.We also take pride in them, by painting murals on the outside walls,...

The Mount Kosciuszko experience

by iandsmith

They came with poles, they came with backpacks, they mostly came with hats, they came with beanies, they came with scarves, they wore parkas, they wore board shots, the older and wiser ones wore long sleeves and they brought their lunch. Some made it, some didn’t; some were to be found laying on the side of the trail; it was like a pilgrimage route to the mount; who would be anointed, who would miss out? What miracles might occur before the small pile of stones on the summit? For me, the miracle was that so many people were trying to get there. From the sleeping babies (did they really care) in prams, to the elderly (heavens, we were numbered among them), to the loving couples, to the foreign travellers, they came in all shapes and sizes. We chose the easy route; first riding up the chairlift to Crackenback and then commencing the walk. It still left us 6.5kms to the summit, invisible over...

by iandsmith

When you're wandering the outer headlands of the harbour you're guaranteed to come across old military establishments designed in bygone times for the defence of the harbour. On this walk you'll come across more than your fair share as Middle Head was a prime location for such installations.
