CAMPING IN AUSTRALIA

by balhannah

Camping with a Tent, Caravanning, Motorhome or Campervan.....................You can camp for FREE all over Australia. What you must remember, is that laws in different States of Australia vary. QUEENSLANDYou are allowed to camp in designated areas, usually within a time limit of 48hours, but this does vary. Queensland enforce their laws, so do not be surprised if you are asked to move on, or fined if you are free camping where you shouldn't be.WESTERN AUSTRALIAYou can camp in designated roadside rest areas for up to 24hours. Most other States are quite tolerant with Free Camping.Remember, FREE CAMPING means that there may be Toilets and Picnic Tables, and that is all.Cheap camping is in National Parks, and a lot of these only have Toilets and Picnic tables.A good book to find the "Free Camping Sites" is 'CAMPS AUSTRALIA WIDE' not cheap, but good. This book is for the budget-conscious...

The Australian animal the...."WALLAROO"

by balhannah

"WALLAROO" .......Is it a Kangaroo?........."NO!"It does look and act like a Kangaroo, but is isn't a Kangaroo. The name came about by joining WALLaby and kangAROO together.....WALLAROO. This is because he is an inbetween size between these two animals. There is the Eastern Wallaroo, the Euro, the Black Wallaroo and the Antilopine Wallaroo. The Antilopine Wallaroo is the one most like a Kangaroo as he likes to be in groups, whereas, the others are more solitary. The Eastern Wallaroo has a coat of grey fur and the Euro has reddish fur. They all have a bare black nose and big ears. The males usually measure up to 1.5mtrs in height and weigh 22 to 45 kgs, with the female about 1metre tall, and weighs between 18 to 22.5kgs. Wallaroos usually live in rocky areas as they have fur on the pads of their feet which makes rock climbing very easy for them. When there is a drought wallaroos will survive...

BIG ????????

by balhannah

A tip on Big you ask? Big What?Well, I don't know if this happens anywhere else in the World, but here in Australia, we seem to have a fascination with "BIG" things for advertising places. There is everything from the small creature like the "ANT" who becomes a BIG ANT, all different kinds of Fruits, Animals, Bicycles, Mowers, Gumboots, even a BIG PIE near where I live, this is advertising the great tasting Pies at the Bakery. Nothing is sacred, I guess there is nothing that can't be made into a giant and put on display by the roadside for all types of people to stop and take photo's of.If you are interested in taking a look at what is "BIG" in Australia, then check out the website, you may get a few laughs!http://www.bigthings.com.au/

GUM TREES / EUCALYPT TREES

by balhannah

I will use the common name, the Australian Gum tree.......Did you know there are about 700 species which can be found all over Australia?Gum trees do have some bad points like.... they grow too big, fall over, drop branches and have other bad habits, problems that relate to some species. But gums have a lot to offer.............. with many growing quickly to give dappled shade and privacy, much needed in our hot Aussie summers! They have pretty flowers and will attract birds, insects and even small mammals to your garden, I have a pink and red flowered Gum that I look forward to seeing flowering each year. The different species vary greatly in size and shape and require various environments to survive. Some varieties that are a little different are.........The Lemon scented gum... its leaves give off a beautiful lemon scent.Scribbly Gum ......is known as the tree with scribbly writing on...

SINGLE LANE BITUMEN ROADS

by balhannah

Travelling around Australia off the main roads and inland, you are sure to come across a narrow bitumen road, with 'hopefully' graded edges. The way to drive these roads, is stick to the bitumen until you spot an oncoming car. You then put half the car on the bitumen, and half on the dirt, and this is the way you pass each other. This is good manners, and IS EXPECTED, people do not like road hogs!

Ensure your always wearing sunscreen during summer

by myshell...

Visiting our beaches is a must, there are amazing beaches in the middle of town or the more secluded ones that aren't as busy, either way you will enjoy every moment. Just remember to slip, slop, slap on some sunscreen as our sun is alot more harsh then other countries around the world.

OZ EXPERIENCE [Backpackers delight!]

by balhannah

If you haven't a hire car, then the "Oz Experience' is a good way to get around for a reasonable price. Trips run in both directions, north and southbound. They will drop you off anywhere on route, as long as it is safe, a legal to do it. Your pass is valid for 6 months. There most popular is the Bruce pass. Start in Melbourne or Sydney, climb Mt Kosciusko, and travel up the East Coast of Australia to Cairns. Some included activities are a Surf Lesson and Outback Cattle Station. Sydney to Cairns approx AUD 690 (including local payment of AUD 95 payable locally). Yes, you can extend it if you wish. Contact Reservations on 1300 300 028. It will cost you AU$50 to extend the pass validity for an additional 6 months. There are lots of different passes, and exciting things to do, please check out their website for all the helpful information. http://www.ozexperience.com/

Working holiday in Australia

by sterlo50

Hi KirstyI'm sure your trip to Australia will have a lifetime of memories. As our economy held off the worst of the world recession there are plenty of jobs you will be able to apply for. It really depends what type of work you're looking at. Fruit picking is mainly on the coast particularly in Queensland. Obviously admin type work is in the capital cities. Resort work can be found on the Whitsundays Queensland....now that would be nice!I have loads of advice on backpacker work, getting around and budget traveling on my website http://www.australian-east-coast.com. I'm sure it will help you. There's also information on destinations, some popular and some only the locals know about.

KURANDA

by Goner

Kuranda is a village in the rainforest above Cairns. It's an arty touristy place, but there are some unique items to buy that aren't available in other parts of Australia. Kuranda is where the train stops from it's trip up the mountain from the coast near Cairns. This is also the stop where you pick up or get off the skyway. Gazing down at the rainforest below was pretty amazing.

Daintree National Park

by Goner

This sign had been modified and become an icon. You'll even see it reproduced on postcards. The Aussies have a great sense of humor. You'll see this sign and others like "Turtle Crossing" as you drive up north to the Daintree National Park from Caines. Daintree was my first visit to a rainforest. The trees are hanging with vines and so thick you can hardly see the sky. Nothing like this in the US mainland.
