BRISBANE

by Goner

Brisbane was a pleasant surprise. It wanders along the Brisbane River and the parts of the city can be viewed from a "Cat" (City Cat Ferry Service). On the river banks older architecture sits along side some delightful new architecture with interesting bridges and stopping off points. Brisbane is a lovely city to view from the hills or the Brisbane River with places to visit close by such as The Australia Zoo and the Glass Mountains, both defintely worth a visit.

Tasmania - The Other Island

by Goner

When most people forget Tasmania is part of Australia, it seems a country all on it's own. There is a very rural landscape with mountains and hills with many views of the sea. It reminded me very much of the the Midwest farmland in the United States. The pace is slow and people are very friendly. It would best be seen by car or hiking as there is very little public transportation. Our tour bus stopped at a bee farm. There were at least 50 kinds of honey of a many different flavors and consitencies.

Cairns

by Goner

Cairns is lovely place to hang your hat while you speed off to see the Great Barrier Reef and at the end of the day there are lots of hotel and restaurants to return to. The trendy Esplanade is teeming with nighttime diners who can sit on the patio and view the waves lapping up on the beach. So much to see in this Northern Queensland area from the "Reef" to the Daintree National Forest and Kuranda.

FUEL PRICES IN AUSTRALIA

by balhannah

In Australia, fuel prices vary from State to State, and day to day, with Thursday being the dearest, and then it keeps coming down in price during the week.It bears to keep this in mind when travelling, just top up while its expensive, and fill up when its cheap if in areas where plenty of Fuel Stations are around.Remember also...............In Australia........ GAS IS GAS!......or LPGPETROL - UNLEADED AND LEADED......Maybe what you call Gas!...............DIESEL IS DIESEL!Make sure you know what type of car your fuel takes when you hire or buy it!If you are travelling around Australia, by Car, Campervan, etc., fuel prices are more expensive in most cases the further inland that you travel. If you would like to get an idea of fuel prices for the areas you are travelling, check out this website...................www.motormouth.com.au

"WWOOFing" AUSTRALIA

by balhannah

WWOOFING is Willing workers on organic farms.Anyone over the age of 17 can join, they can be of any nationality - including Australian. You should have maturity, independence, at least average physical fitness to be able to participate.I have a friend who is at the moment, working their way around Australia, and staying and helping at these places. You work in exchange for food and accommodation The time spent working varies according to where you are staying...eg... how busy the host is at the time of your visit and other factors - but it should average out at about a half day's work for a full day's keep. They suggest that 4 to 6 hours a day is fair exchange for a days full board and accommodation. This is a way to see Australia, not only for Backpackers, but for anybody.Check out their website below for more details, it just might interest you! www.wwoof.com.au
