AUSTRALIAN TIME ZONES

by balhannah

In Australia, we have THREE DIFFERENT TIME ZONESTHEY ARE....................Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST)...New South Wales (except Broken Hill), Victoria, Queensland,Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory Australian Central Standard Time (ACST).....South Australia, Northern Territory, and Broken Hill in NSWAustralian Western Standard Time (AWST) Western Australia Australia also has daylight saving, this is observed from the 1st Sunday in October, to the 1st Sunday in April, every year.To make life difficult, not all states have it. At the moment (2009), Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not move their clocks forward. Check this website if you are unsure of the time zones.www.worldtimezone.com/time-australia24.php -

EMERGENCIES - DIAL 000

by balhannah

This tip is not just for Queensland, but for the whole of Australia. The national telephone number for all emergency services in Australia including AMBULANCE, FIRE, and POLICE is "000". 000 calls are answered by an Operator who will ask which service you require - Police, Fire or Ambulance. The operator will ask relevant questions, and arrange an appropriate response from the local Police, Ambulance or Fire Service. 000 calls are free on all mobile phones. Remember this number, it may save your life one day if something goes wrong!

Coming to OZ

by briam60

OK so most of your questions have been answered but here we go from the top.1) If you are coming to OZ in May - June 2010 start north, later in teh year it will be stupidly hot up there plus you have the wet season and cyclones are all three things I would suggest you avoid if possible.2) You do need a work visa and others have supplied the links, depending on the seaon there is often hospitality jobs and in the regional aras there are always jobs picking fruit etc, money not great, and work tough but you will likely meet other travellers doing this type of work. I would NOT suggest you wing it and try to work without a visa, getting caught is nto worth risking the rest of your travel plans over.3) With the job market in oz as it is, several agencies will try to get you to pay them for helping you get work. DON"T DO IT. there are about 4 major websites that are designed to match...

DRIVER REVIVER STOPS

by balhannah

Driver Reviver is an excellent idea that has been put into action. It is to try and help reduce the number of accidents caused by driver fatique. These sites (220 ) Australia wide, open up all over Australia on the edges of roads on Public Holidays. This is when a lot of people that don't travel much, are on the roads.Volunteers run these road side stops. They offer a free cup of Coffee, Tea or Cordial, and a biscuit, once I got a mini kit-kat chocolate. It is a free service, but a DONATION IS GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED. There is usually some picnic tables and a Toilet at the stop. They ask you to sign the book, stating where you have come from and where you are heading to.We often stop, as you are meant to take a 2hour break, and this is where they are approx located on the main road journey. It is a great idea, with Arnott's biscuits, and Bushell's tea & coffee being the Sponsors.

CUDDLE A KOALA

by balhannah

So, you have come to Australia and you want to see and cuddle a Koala.SOUTH AUSTRALIA is the State to go to, as you are still allowed to cuddle them here. There are quite a few Wildlife Sanctuaries that offer this, but an excellent one, where you can pat a Emu and Kangaroo as well, is the CLELAND WILDLIFE RESERVE.You can feed and wander around at leisure among kangaroos, wallabies, Emus and waterfowl. As well, there are Dingoes, reptiles, Tasmanian Devils.Just twenty minutes from the Adelaide city centre.OPEN 9.30 am to 5 pm daily. No entry after 4.30 pm.CLOSED.... Christmas Day.Park entry costs $16 for adults, $13 concession, $9.50 for kids or $43.50 for a family (2009)www.clelandwildlifepark.sa.gov.au

starting off: work and travel to Australia

by llauraa

First thing you do before anything else is check out the visa requirements to work in Australia. Go to www.migrationexpert.com/Australia which has all visa requirements for living and working here.Next step once you get a visa ( not before) is to look up recruitment agencies and/or potential work prospects and plan your trip according to the availability of work seeing as you thinking long term. I say 'not before' because the first thing any prospective employer here in Aus will ask you is have you got a work visa and how long is it for?The capital cities are obviously where more office / temping work can be found, but also the rural areas in Queensland offer fruit picking and other farm-rural related work for travellers. Google "travelling work opportunies Australia"Weather: In relation to weather, the other posters are correct in that Qld and other northern parts of Australia ( eg...

Tropical fruits

by SirRichard

The north of Australia is a tropical zone, with wide areas of jungle. So you will find many tropical fruits there, as fruits and as juices. I enjoyed a presentation of fruits during a daytrip to the Daintree National park with "Billy Tea" agency.

Feed the kangaroos

by SirRichard

When travelling around Australia you will have many chances to see this special animals. I did it in Daintree National Park, in a Kangaroo Farm where we had lunch during a daytrip to the park. They had some kangaroos and wallabies there and you could feed them with bread and fruits.

Sunrises

by SirRichard

If you visit the EAST COAST of Australia, make an effort and wake up early a few days and go see the sunrise in any of the many beaches they've got there. This pic was taken in "4 Miles Beach" in Port Douglas. I woke up at 6 and headed to the beach by 6:20- And was not the only one there, many people were walking, jogging... and the temperature was excellent (even for winter), much nicer than the noon hard sun.
