Going feral by iandsmith When someone has been described as 'gone feral' in Australia it means they've sold up and bought a property in the bush somewhere, often the more isolated the better. A tendency towards eccentricity is often a feature of their personality and tidiness not in the top ten list of their characteristics. Invariably, said person ends up with an eclectic backyard mix of scrap vehicles, vegetable gardens, chooks et al. This is such a person in his little kingdom at Eaglehawk Neck in Tasmania. I should also mention they are usually very interesting people! Leave a Comment

Going down! by iandsmith When you come to Australia, make sure you bring your sense of humour or you will miss out on a few things; such as this photo. It is of Bleak's Turdle Farm (aka Dorrigo Sewage Treatment Works), not normally a place you'd want to visit, but here the well kept gardens are a tourist attraction and wonderful photo opportunity! This is the not-too-endangered Lavatree (sub species Pissina Flushturdum). You have to bear in mind that Australia is the only country in the world that celebrated a convicted forger on its banknotes! It was actually Francis Greenway who arrived as a convict but later earned fame as an architect then fell out of favour because he got greedy and charged too much. He died penniless. Leave a Comment

Are Australians unique in this Cultural Characteristic?? I suspect not! Are we genetically predisposed towards purchasing one of the "Big Two" Australian made cars: Ford or Holden? Is the ingrained choice of our fathers passed on to following generations? That seems to be the case. Lots of Aussies never change their brand of vehicle. "It has to be a Holden!" or "My dad drove Fords: so do I!" The major players in Australia's car industry are Ford and General Motors Holden (Holden for short). The most popular form of motor sport in Oz involves products of these two companies vying with each other on street circuits or purpose built race tracks with the rabid support of spectators dressed in branded gear which leaves no doubt as to what brand of car they drive. If you are in Australia and interested in motor sport, check out the V-8 Supercar Series to see if a meet is on near your holiday venue. THE meet of the year is on the second weekend of October each year at MT Panorama, Bathurst west of Sydney.

Another yummy Christmas Cake by cassiejoy42 Method 1. Heat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas2. Grease a round or square cake tin, line the bottom and sides with baking parchment. 2. Sieve flour, salt, mixed spice and cinnamon into a bowl. 3. Cream butter and sugar in large mixing bowl, then mix in sugar, treacle, marmalade and vanilla essence until light and fluffy. 4. Mix eggs a little at a time into the mixture adding a tablespoon of flour mixture with the last amount. 5. Fold in remaining flour mixture until well mixed, then mix in the dried fruit, mixed peel, glace cherries and almonds. 6. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin, make a slight hollow in the centre. 7. Bake in oven for 3 hours, then test with a skewer. If not ready bake for another hour testing every 20 minutes until skewer comes out clean. 8. Remove from oven and leave to cool in tin for 15 minutes. 9. Turn out on to a wire rack and leave to cool. 10. Once cool, make a few holes in cake with skewer and pour over 3-4 tbsp of brandy. Let the brandy soak into cake. 11. Store cake wrapped in foil in an airtight tin or plastic container, holes side up. 12. OPTIONAL: For a rich and moist cake, spoon over a few tablespoons of brandy every week until you are ready to ice and decorate your cake. To Decorate the Cake: 1. Place the cake on a foil board or cake plate. 2. Dust your hands and work surface with icing sugar and knead marzipan until soft. 3. Roll out half marzipan to fit the top of the cake and roll out the rest in strips to fit around the sides of the cake. 4. Brush cake all over with warmed apricot jam, then place marzipan on top and around cake. 5. Cover cake with clean tea towel, then leave in a cool place for at least one day. 6. To make icing, lightly whisk egg whites adding sugar at intervals. Beat well until icing reaches soft peaks. Add glycerine if using and lemon juice. 7. Spread icing all over cake either flat iced using a clean ruler or by forming soft peaks. Decorate with Christmas ornaments.

Art shop in aboriginal community by martin_nl All over Australia you will find small aboriginal art establishments. Some are in local communities on aboriginal land for which you have to get a permit to enter. Most cities also have a couple of art shops. However always ask for stuff that the artist is known of, for real handmade items. Aboriginees use coulours in their artwork that vary from region to region. They use natural ingredients to make colours, that's why there is a regional defference. Have fun shopping around! Leave a Comment

Watch out for roos on skies, it's not even snowing by martin_nl All over Australia you will find their world famous road signs. You can buy them at pretty much any tourist place and souvenir shop. Some people like to adjust the real ones. Take a look at this one that we found in the Snowy Mountains. A roo on skies, we really found that hilarious. Leave a Comment

Merry Christmas all by iandsmith I came, I saw, I loved it. Quirky Aussie humour. Imagine the trouble someone went to to get the dummy (I hope it's a dummy!) up there. This is a shot taken at Inverell in northern N.S.W. Leave a Comment

Tipping in Australia is different than in the States. There's no set expectation of an amount. If the service was good, round up the bill or add a couple dollars. Leave a Comment

by leanne_pearc Australian Football - we love it, we go crazy over it and never bad mouth it. If you are fortunate enough to be in australia when the season is on - you must go to a game. The crowd is great and you won't be killed unlike other sport spectators. SEE MY TRAVELOGUE for photos Leave a Comment
