Bars, Clubs, Nightclubs, Pubs: All the entertainment you could want

by Kate-Me

There are plenty of nightclubs, pubs and gay bars etc in Melbourne. My recommendation if you like rock music is to check out the pubs in the gig guide - many offer live bands for a cheap night out.Good way to hear some Aussie music and absorb some of the culture - after all, it's in such pubs that Oz music was born. Its grass roots I guess. Many now famous rock bands started out playing in small pubs in Melbourne (Melbourne has had more of a reputation for being the pub music capital than Sydney though I'm sure the music industry is very alive in Sydney too) Most places are fairly casual but note the 'no shirt = no service' rule (and thong shoes aren't generally accepted). If you're going to an actual rock concert, the 'no sneakers' rule may apply and so you'll need to dress up a bit more.

Iguana Bar: Bar, restaurant and night club.

by Natsmaloo

Kings Cross is great if you love the night life and love to boogy if you know what I mean. There are alot of gays and prostitutes but don't let that put you off. There is always fun to be had in the nightclubs. My fav is The Iguana Bar. It even has pool tables!! It's a fairly trendy place and a bit up market. Something tarty never goes astray.

Ronald_T's Nightlife Tip

by Ronald_T

Text from: Dugald Jellie, The Sydney Morning Herald, June 2000.It don't look so Sunset Strip in the morning hours when in need of a hangover fry-up feed (sausages, ham, bacon, two eggs, toast, baked beans, salt, cholesterol, washed down with re-fill coffee). But it's still unmistakably the B&B, cluttered with memorabilia and signed publicity photos (from George Bush to Richard Wilkins), the brass polished, lights still flashing and memories of drunk Australian cricketers still strong. A showboat full of bravado, legend and shore-leave sailors.

At Sydney: the all area of Kings Cross is a lively place. The best bar to have a nice evening (my personal opinion) is in the “Bourbon & Beefsteak Bar”. You find here fun, food, live music and entertainment.Canberra the Capital, is a problem. The centre is good at daytime, but in the evening (special during the week) the city is dead. You really need to now someone there to find your way in the evening. That’s because the nicest bars are situated outside the centre. In the weekend there is more activity, but you need to be a member in almost every bar. My favourite café there is “the Phoenix”.In Cairns you have all fun and pleasure you want. Normal, because Cairns is the most popular place for tourism.

The Elephant and Wheelbarrow!...

by scharneckk

The Elephant and Wheelbarrow! (What a roudy little pub this is!)It is fun .. definately not your normal Upperclass kind of joint .. if you just want to mellow, drink with mates and have some fun .. go to this pub .. Brisbane has just opened their first 'Elephant and Wheelbarrow' and Melbourne has about 15 of them! Smart Casual! (Definately no suits required!)

The nightlife, my first experience of 'clubbing' was there in Darwin,NT. I went to a place called 'The Time' whoa. & another I forget name possibly 'Beachcombers' (?) X-cellent places!I remember it seemed alot cheaper than when I was clubbin' in Hawaii... But Hawaii just might be really X-pensive. Real nice ppl when they've had a few drinks. Seems bars here in USA always has a drunken jerk, but no problems witnessed there! well, we had all our civilian clothes in duffel bags, could only fit 2-3 changes of 'civie's' in there & the bags are packed so tight that when we got on pass everyone had really wrinkly clothing... kinda funny site. alot of us bought new clothing or laundered them.
