Hikes at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station

by windsorgirl Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are a number of easy walks from the Alice Springs Telegraph Station. A few will take you uphill for some great views.

There are also some ranger guided walks available. Check the website for dates.

South wesr of Darwin by about 100 km you will find the little fishing village of Dundee. Said top be a mecca for fishing especially off the Peron Islands. I've as yet to catch anything there, howevere with a boat your more likely to.

    Hot Air Balloon Ride

by windsorgirl Written Jan 3, 2004

Going for a Hot Air Balloon Ride, I think, is one of those once in a lifetime events. Although it can be quite pricey, you should give it a try. I was lucky at the Darwin Casino and decided to use my winnings to splurge on this adventure.

Our ride originated near Alice Springs and we soared above the MacDonnell Ranges. As you can see, to prepare for take off, the basket and balloon are on their side. It is also dark outside, since it was only 5am. It was a wonderful experience to watch the sunrise as we floated silently above the outback. We were treated to a sumptuous champagne breakfast afterwards.

    Camel Riding

While in Alice Springs you may have the opportunity to try camel riding. We rode at the Frontier Camel Farm. Although it may not qualify as a sports activity, it definitely was an interesting and unique experience.

The best part was the mount and dismount. The camels will kneel down for you while you climb on or off, you just have to hang on while they get into position.

    Cycling in Alice Springs

If you have a day to kill in Alice Springs, I suggest renting a bike and riding along the almost always dry Todd River to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station. It is an easy, scenic ride.
