the aboriginal name for kings canyon is watarrka. watarrka national park is separate from uluru-kata tjuta, but is for free, so no need to pay. the rim walk starts at the base of the canyon. it goes STRAIGHt UP. i'm not joking, enlarge the photo and you can see a few people halfway up the starting hill. over 500 steps were carved out by parks staff to make it easier for the walker. easier? pfft you gotta be joking! one of the hardest walks i had ever done. at 9am it was 39 degrees celcius already. and it only got hotter. there are signs warning people of the danger, esp those with weak hearts and bad health. bring plenty of water, suncream, a hat, and loose fitting long clothing. a few people in our group already turned back half way up the hill, deciding they couldn't handle it. and it only got harder! it was towards the end of the walk, heading towards midday, and the sun was intense. this was the last photo i took of the walk before i got a bit of 'heatstroke'. yes, i was seeing stars, all dizzy and shaky. i stopped on a rock, and my walking buddy gave me some sugary drink. after a bit of a rest i felt better, made my way down the canyon wall, and that was the end of one of my greatest achievments! yes, it felt good to have done this, it was a challenge, and i did it! the rim of the canyon is littered with boulders, rock and the odd scattering of hardy desert plants, such as the desert fig, which somehow can survive with only a few drops of water. otherwise all there is here is a feeling of desolation and dust. it is really quiet, and walking amongst weird shaped rocks can be an eerie experience. what is even weirder, is find seashell fossils inprinted in the rocks. that's right, sea shells. this was once the ocean floor, pushed up over millions of years ago! after a cool off and relax, its back up alot of steps to the rim of the canyon again. trust me, nobody wanted to leave the bliss of the garden of eden! so we went walking in the heat again, and stopped here to look down to the place we had just been. it was really high up at this point!
