kings canyon
  • Tip Rating:
  • kings canyon is just stunning. in the middle of the desert, here is a natural feature that is a must see. it is located about 3 hours from ayers rock resort, so it makes for a perfect day trip, or alternatively, you can stay overnight and get an early start. there are two walks one can do.

the creek walk is 1.6km and follows the canyon floor. its shaded by trees, and is very easy. it takes about an hour to do.

the rim walk is 4km and is tough. alot of climbing and scrambing, exposed to the desert sun, but the views are spectacular. it takes about 4 hours.

either walk will allow you to get a feel of how big and special this place is!

    watarrka
  • Tip Rating:
  • the aboriginal name for kings canyon is watarrka. watarrka national park is separate from uluru-kata tjuta, but is for free, so no need to pay.

the rim walk starts at the base of the canyon. it goes STRAIGHt UP. i'm not joking, enlarge the photo and you can see a few people halfway up the starting hill. over 500 steps were carved out by parks staff to make it easier for the walker. easier? pfft you gotta be joking! one of the hardest walks i had ever done. at 9am it was 39 degrees celcius already. and it only got hotter.

there are signs warning people of the danger, esp those with weak hearts and bad health. bring plenty of water, suncream, a hat, and loose fitting long clothing. a few people in our group already turned back half way up the hill, deciding they couldn't handle it. and it only got harder!

    mirage?
  • Tip Rating:
  • it was towards the end of the walk, heading towards midday, and the sun was intense. this was the last photo i took of the walk before i got a bit of 'heatstroke'. yes, i was seeing stars, all dizzy and shaky. i stopped on a rock, and my walking buddy gave me some sugary drink. after a bit of a rest i felt better, made my way down the canyon wall, and that was the end of one of my greatest achievments! yes, it felt good to have done this, it was a challenge, and i did it!

    barren rim
  • Tip Rating:
  • the rim of the canyon is littered with boulders, rock and the odd scattering of hardy desert plants, such as the desert fig, which somehow can survive with only a few drops of water.

otherwise all there is here is a feeling of desolation and dust. it is really quiet, and walking amongst weird shaped rocks can be an eerie experience.

what is even weirder, is find seashell fossils inprinted in the rocks. that's right, sea shells. this was once the ocean floor, pushed up over millions of years ago!

not too close to the edge!
  • Tip Rating:
  • if your afraid of heights stay away from the edge! the walls of the canyon are only 100 metres or so high, but still, high enough! a sheer drop to the rocks below wouldn't be a fun way to pass the time! the views of the canyon and surrounding desertscape are just fantastic! and if your cool like me, you will wear black socks with your sneakers as well! hooray!

    view from above!
  • Tip Rating:
  • if you get the chance, then take a different view of kings canyon from the air! i took this helicopter ride over kings canyon. i was scared at first, my first ever time on a chopper, but it was so worth it, and by the end of it i was hanging my head out the window! so weird to see where we had just walked previously. it really gives you an idea of the sheer scale of the desert and the canyon. well worth it!

Valley of the Wind -One of the two hiking trails at the Olgas.
7.4 km long, it takes about 3 hours.

Here you can walk into the spectacular landscape of Kata Tjuta. There are two lookout points on the way which have wonderful views.

Take care: it can get really hot here.
If the forecast temperature is 36°C or more, they close the Track beyond the Karu Lookout after 11 o' clock.

The picture shows the View from the second Lookout Point, Karingana.

    the jewel of watarrka
  • Tip Rating:
  • the jewel of this beautiful area is definitely the 'garden of eden', a water hole deep in the canyon. the rim walk goes down numerous wooden steps, across this bridge, and then down into the canyon.

the water here is nice and cool, perfect for a quick swim. and it's just magic in the shade and cool of the canyon walls.

    back up top
  • Tip Rating:
  • after a cool off and relax, its back up alot of steps to the rim of the canyon again. trust me, nobody wanted to leave the bliss of the garden of eden! so we went walking in the heat again, and stopped here to look down to the place we had just been. it was really high up at this point!

If you want to visit Lake Amadeus, you need to get written permission from the traditional custodians. The exact procedure changes from time to time and it is worthwhile contacting the Central Land Council some time in advance. Permission is not always given and you should demonstrate a legitimate reason.

The trip is well worth it though! It`s only 40 kilometers from the resort. You really get a feeling that you have the place to yourself.

The salt pans, desert oaks and red sands really evoke a feeling of the outback.
