Mt. Connor
Mt. Connor is a huge mesa that sticks out on the horizon in a vast desert sea of nothing. You can see it on the way to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. It is 100km east of the park near Curtin Springs. It sits on privately owned land but tours are available through some companies.

Attila (Mount Conner)
On the way from Ayers Rock to Kings Canyon we passed the Attila (Mount Conner) - which is often mistaken for the Uluru.

Attila (Mount Conner) is flat-topped and horseshoe-shaped and reaches 760 m above sea level. It was visited in 1873 by William Gosse (a government surveyor) who named it for a South Australian politician, M.L. Conner.

The region's Aborigines believe it to be the home of icemen who create cold weather.

We only saw the Attila from the highway...

Red planet
One of the last views we had of Kata Tjuta before heading to Kings Canyon. The sand was so unbelievably red, looked almost otherworldly!

Our very last glimpse of Kata Tjuta was from a hill where we could also see Uluru at the same time. Brilliant!! Although impossible to fit in the camera at the same time.
Everybody looking left and right - it was like tennis!

Sunrise/Sunset at Kata Tjuta
See sunrise and sunset at the Olgas. Unfortunately, I was only able to do sunrise, but it was unbelievable. I personally love the way the light comes up behind the rocks. This is an absolute must if you have a free morning (see Uluru first).

The main viewing platform is also good for views and photographs at all time, other than sunrise and sunset.

Photograph coming soon.

  • Directions: The first viewing area labled "Sunrise/Sunset Viewing Area" -- the other area is not as good.

    The Olgas
Some 50kms from Ayer's Rock but still part of the National Park (entrance ticket covers both) are the Olgas - a range of hills/rocks, unlike the single entity that is Ayer's Rock.

    The Australian Outback
The Australian Outback is all around Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. It makes up the center of Australia and consists of 2 million square miles of dry earth and some eye-popping natural formations. The soil is red, giving the heart of the desert the nickname "Red Centre".

The temperature is hot during the day, sometimes reaching 35-40 degress Celcius (even in winter), and cold at night, sometimes dipping below freezing. Rain is rare.

Kata Tjuta - Valley of the Winds
The Valley of the Winds has one of the best views, walks, and experiences at Kata Tjuta. In between 2 giant rocks, you can see a valley of green plants with red domes rising above it. A howling wind blows through the valley.

Walking through the valley is a great experience. The valley walk is a 7km walk that takes you around many of the rocks at Kata Tjuta. It is sometimes closed due to extreme heat.
