Mackay & Eungella National Park

by ettiewyn

State: QueenslandI visited in: January 2007Mackay is located at the east coast, about 700km south of Cairns. It is served by Greyhound which made it a convenient destination for me. The main reason why I went there was not the town itself, though, but nearby Eungella National Park: You can see the platypus there!!! :-)I had been fascinated with this strange animal for a long time, so I really wanted to see one. There are daytrips to the national park from Mackay, and so I travelled to this town.Eungella National Park is the oldest and biggest patch of subtropical rainforest in Australia. It is a great place for bushwalking and also has some nice waterfalls. The platypus watching takes place at Broken River and is an activity that needs a lot of patience, as you are sitting at the water and staring on the surface all the time, waiting for the platypus to come up... But it was worth it, it...

Albury

by ettiewyn

State: New South WalesI visited in: February 2010Albury is a town located on the Murray River, and this was the reason why I went there - I wanted to see the river that was to Australia what the Mississippi was to the USA. You can already see: Albury is a place of great history! You can feel it while you stroll along the river, or when you visit the grand railway station of the town.A walk along the river is just wonderful, you can enjoy the atmosphere and also see a lot of birds (mostly cockatoos, ibises and parrots). Such an idyllic place! There is also a nice art gallery and a beautiful botanical garden. Albury is just a very friendly place, and no tourist place - in fact, I did not see any other tourist during my stay, although I was there in summer. It was very easy to meet locals, and I enjoyed this relaxed stay very much.To read more about my experiences in Albury, visit my Albury...

Flinders Ranges

by ettiewyn

State: South AustraliaI visited in: December 2009The Flinders Ranges are an area of mountain ranges north of Adelaide. They are a remote area where it is difficult to get to on public transport. You either need to go there by your own car, preferably a 4WD, or on a guided tour. I did a tour with Wallaby Tracks Adventure Tours and had a fantastic weekend full of wonderful hiking. I was the only customer on the tour and so it was more like travelling with a friend! We saw Wilepena Pound, a huge crater and the most famous place in the area, visited Arkaroo Rock with ancient Aboriginal rock paintings, drove through the interesting Brachina Gorge, hiked up Dutchman's Stern and did many other things. If you like hiking, I strongly recommend a trip to the area. It is not visited by many overseas tourists and it is a beautiful, unspoilt area where you can do great hikes and also see a lot of...

Port Macquarie

by ettiewyn

State: New South WalesI visited in: January 2007Port Macquarie is located at the east coast in New South Wales, but it is not visited as much as other towns in the area. It is a very interesting town, though. Besides its main attraction, the famous Koala Hospital, it is a very historic town and has several attractions of historical interest. It is the third-oldest town on the Australian mainland! You can see many buildings built by convicts that bear witness of those old days. If you are looking for nature and relaxation, you will find it at the beach and in a beautiful nature park.Port Macquarie can easily be reached by Greyhound bus, it is located about six hours from Sydney. If you would like to read more about this underrated place, please visit my Port Macquarie page

Mount Isa

by ettiewyn

State: QueenslandI visited in: March 2010Maybe you know the saying: "You aren't a real Aussie until you've been to Isa" - well, I am not an Aussie, but I wanted to visit Mount Isa all the same!Mount Isa is a mining town in the outback of Queensland, quite a long way from everything. It mainly serves as a service town to the surrounding mines and cattle stations, so it is not one of those small, relaxed outback towns, but rather a busy place. Its main attraction is the Outback at Isa, a big touristic place with a mine that you can visit on a three hour guided tour (this was fantastic), and several small museums (ok, but nothing to write home about). A must see is the City Lookout from where you have a wonderful view on the town (my main picture was taken there). If you travel on public transport, Mount Isa is still easy enough to reach, as two different Greyhound lines meet here and you can...

Winton

by ettiewyn

State: QueenslandI visited in: March 2010Winton is located in the outback of Queensland and it is famous for two reasons: On the one hand because the song Waltzing Matilda was written here (it is the unofficial national anthem of Australia), and on the other hand, because it is the founding place of Qantas Airlines (together with its neighbouring town Longreach).Of course the main attractions of the town deal with these topics: There is the Waltzing Matilda Centre, a whole tourist venue dedicated to the famous song, and the Qantilda Museum, which deals with the history of Qantas. However, there are many more things to explore in Winton. It is a very friendly town, and the locals do a lot to welcome visitors and to show them what their town has to offer! There are many small, interesting sights, like the Royal Theatre or Arno's Wall, a wall full of rubbish that was made into an...

Chillagoe

by ettiewyn

State: QueenslandI visited in: September 2009Chillagoe is a small town at the edge of the Queensland outback, about 200km west of Cairns. It really is not on the average tourist map, but I visited because I saw a daytrip offered from Cairns by Billy Tea Safaris. I knew that it was a good company, so I took the opportunity. Chillagoe is a very small town, just about two hundred inhabitants. In the 19th century, though, it had about 10,000 inhabitants, as it was a successful mining town that attracted many workers. Today you can see a "ghost mine" that bears witness of the more glorious past. The main sight are the Chillagoe Caves, beautiful limestone caves that were formed during the ancient past when there was still a reef where there is now the Australian mainland. If you want to read more about this small gem, please have a look at my Chillagoe page

Longreach

by ettiewyn

State: QueenslandI visited in: March 2010Longreach is a small country town in the outback of Queensland. It has two major attractions: The Qantas Heritage Museum and the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame. Whilte I did not like the latter too much (although some things on display were still very interesting), I thoroughly enjoyed the first. Longreach has strong ties to Qantas Airlines, as Qantas was founded in this town and its neighbour town Winton. The museum tells you about the early pioneering days and how the airline was founded. There are also many planes on display, the highlight being a Boeing 747.There is not much to see in Longreach's town centre, but I still found it a pleasant place with very friendly locals and I enjoyed my stay in a cabin. I came here by Greyhound bus, it was an eighteen hour ride from Brisbane, but I like the Greyhound very much, so I enjoyed it :-)If you...

Goomeri

by ettiewyn

State: QueenslandI visited in: November 2006Goomeri is a small town located about 250km northwest of Queensland. I went there at the beginning of my first trip to Australia to do a Jillaroo Course and learn about farmwork. I had a wonderful time on a farm called Ettiewyn, so that is where I got my nickname from - because I loved the place so much and also like the sound of the name :-)I spent a whole week there, did some mustering, learned about life in the country, experienced some crazy things, heard wonderful stories and just had a most unique time!On my Goomeri page you can read more about my experiences on Ettiewyn in two travelogues and I have also two tips about the township itself.

Cape Hauy (continued)

by iandsmith

I was reminded of pop music, “wet, wet, wet” came into my head as the sky darkened all across the horizon and here I was, nearly two hours from base.Where once there were left over puddles from the morning showers, now there were ponds. In places I had to side step the trail to avoid them. Though I had a spray jacket it, too, slowly seeped moisture until I reached the two hours return sign again. By then I was saturated well and truly, no longer imagining how much smarter I’d been than those who left early. There was a couple in their thirties there, wondering whether to proceed or not. They had only just finished the 5 day Overland Track 2 days ago and it had been fine the whole way. Now they were thinking of quitting this minor walk such was the weather.Within another ten minutes my boots started to squelch. What does it matter when everything including your underwear is wringing wet?...
