savannah way

by lynee

http://www.savannahway.com.au/ is the government web page which is always a good starting point for info.Definitely stay at Katherine and go on a trip up the gorges, I liked Fitzroy crossing, go to Geike Gorge and Tunnel creek. Kunnunurra is intersting for a few day stop, intersting rock formations (hidden Valley) with good bushwalk.Do a detour to Lawn Hill. must not miss this place, magical.Go up to Karumba, best sunsets, chilligo has nice caves, go to Undarra Lava tubes. These were my favorite places along this route. Will tell you about caravan parks later, when I find that info. I assume you have a 4wd and will not be travelling in the middle of the wet. Have done this route in sept, oct, and it was OK

Badger Weir Bushwalk and picnic ground

by TravelPossom

I think this place is a hidden gem. Located in Healsville, Victoria, it is a temperate rainforest where you can experience the less typical Australian bush. It also has a great picnic area, is completely free (uncommon in Australia I'm sorry to say), and if you're quiet you can see native animals in the wild such as parrots, lyrebirds, kangaroos, goannas and kookaburras. This can se paired with a visit to Healsville Sanctuary, another great experience to see Australian native wildlife in a great setting. Great for children too!

A natural bath at the beach

by marcia1

Coogee Beach in Sydney is not the most touristy of beaches and is a nice, easy swimming beach. Regularly serviced by buses and has plenty of eateries in the area. There is a coastal cliff walk (cliff pictured) and at the southern end of the beach a park and ... A really cool natural pool hewn from the rock that is for women bathers only! (Sorry, guys.) It's called McIver's Baths or just the Coogee Women's Baths will get you there. Needless to say, it's salt water, it's sheltered, and a whole range of women use it. Even the odd little coloured anemone has colonised this pool so it'll really get you in touch with nature. There's a short, nice walk to get there with some plantlife to see, but I think accessibility for the disabled might be limited. There used to be a men's bath I think at the north end of the beach, run by an avant-garde masseuse dude in the 1930s, but this ain't there no...

The Kimberley

by martin_nl

The Kimberley is one of the least visited regions of Australia and Western Australia (WA). However I can advise everyone go to and have a look at the boabs, rivers, and other remote areas of this great region in the top of WA. If you are lucky to have a 4WD vehicle the possibilities in WA are only limted by time, fuel, water and food. There is just too much to see and do in this area. The entrance to the Kimberley if you approach from the north is at Kununurra. This is one of the last stops where you can stock up on all the supplies you might need. Make sure to think of everything before you leave here if you go onto a 4WD track. From Kununurra you can decide to either go onto the Great Northern Highway, which is a sealed road or choose the adventurous unsealed road that is the Gibb River Road. If choosing this road make sure to have checked the track conditions, since many months of the...

by mad4travel

This is a great place to stop if you are travelling the Great Ocean Road. It is about an hours drive from the 12 Apostles thru lovely pastoral scenery.Warnambool was originally a whaling port but is now more devoted to tourism. It is has a nice small town feel with some nice restaurants in the centre of town. Its a good place to go whalewatching from in season. There is also an interesting heritage park - Flagstaff Hill, which recreates an early australian coastal port. There is also a great laser show in the evening.website is www.flagstaffhill/info

Coober Pedy - Opal Capital of the World

by beccabug

Coober Pedy is a place you are only likely to see if you are travelling by car or coach between Alice Springs and Adelaide. It's an opal mining town in the middle of nowhere. One of the unique features of this town is that most people live underground! While there you can do a tour of an old opal mine, underground display home, and even sleep underground yourself! A friend and I took a walk around town one evening and went into explore this church. In the entracne bits of the walls still had opal on them!

A National Past-time it seems.

by unravelau

Whale watching has just about become a national past-time with us....... In winter we tend to watch them swimming north and then into spring watch them coming back often with an extra fin (lol), but still the watch goes on year in year out. I am still waiting for a close up encounter but I could show you a great snap of a couple of spouts in the distance from mutton bird island.

Vineyards

by aramat

I think it's worth to visit a few wineries. Australian wines have gained a very good reputation during the last decade and it's quite understandable, considering their quality. I visited four wineries in the Yarra Valley, near Melbourne (the Yarra Ridge, the Oakridge Estate, the St Hubert's and the Domaine Chandon) on a day trip organised by the Backpacker Winery Tours and it was great. Our guide was absolutely nice and enthusiastic and knowledgeable, the wines were excellent, we had delicious food, and the countryside was just so beautiful.

Grampians NP

by tini58de

I don't exactly know, if it is off the beaten path, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Grampians National Park in Victoria! Folded sandstones form a series of ranges running from North to South for about 100 km. The highest point, Mt William in the east, is 1168 m high. The park surrounds three pretty big reservoirs where boating and fishing are popular. Also there are many creeks and streams. There are numerous walking tracks to all the major scenic features. The Wonderland area, near Halls Gap, is the most fascinating and accessible. Eucalypts dominate the forests and woodlands, but nature there has a lot more to offer: nearly 900 flowering species including 100 orchids are found in the park and several are found nowhere else. Over 200 bird species have been recorded. And if you are lucky, you can see the endangered brush-tailed rock wallaby..

Travel the Nullarbor

by aussirose

If you have time, travel across the Nullabor. It's an experience you will not forget in a hurry. It takes a couple of days to do it but just take in the scenery and spot the animals on the way. (Kangaroos, eagles, camels etc). Also the sunsets and sunrises are amazing. This is a pic I took of a sunrise (Yes sunrise!) on the Nullarbor.Nullarbor
