Unfortunately time does not...

by iandsmith

Unfortunately time does not allow visitors to really savour some of the most wonderful parts of Australia and, sadly, tour operators only take you to pre-arranged locations. Some of them are very worthwhile but often you bypass some lovely country. This is a shot on the Golden Highway taken between Jerrys Plains and Denman looking across to Broke Range.

Cape Hauy

by iandsmith

Favorite Thing: I’d left it till the weather cleared, no sense getting wet on a 4 hour walk. I’d always wanted to get to the end of some of the capes on the Tasman Peninsula and I’d managed Cape Raoul last year and sought out Cape Hauy this time.It had stopped raining at Devil’s Kitchen so I packed up and drove the 20 minutes around to Fortescue Bay, parked, packed lunch and set off at around 10.30. I had timed it right but, though the rain was no more, the bush was still wet and it continually brushed against my jeans as I made my way along the rocky trail. The first bit beside the bay was lovely, but that soon stopped and the track turned up and inland.20 minutes in and I started to sweat though it wasn’t really hot, simply the exertions required to scale the slope. I hoped it wouldn’t last and eventually it levelled out and had bits of smooth boardwalk, such a relief after the uneven...

Watagan mountains - Gap Falls

by iandsmith

The drop is higher than I’d imagined but the stream flow is about right because this is no Niagara, it’s more your splashing stream in a leafy glade with lots of atmosphere but not much water. Still, what you could hear over the thrumming Black Prince Cicadas added to the ambience.Ferns, moss and lichen clung tentatively to the boulders like a painter’s green palette splashed over the landscape and here and there the rivulet etched its way like a fickle wanderer unsure of its journey. We viewed the falls with the respect that bushwalkers give when they’re in a special place and we tarried for half an hour, distracted only occasionally by having to remove tiny black creatures that were intent on partaking of some of our blood to supplement their diet. We were not amused. The return journey took us to the intersection again and we chose the other trail this time, coming across a fine example...

Watagan mountains

We’d been to the Watagans; my bushwalking partner Ken and I, but we’d basically botched it. I hadn’t done my research and was relying on memory, at my age something one should know not to rely on. As such we took a couple of hours just to make what should have been a 40 minute trip. This time though I’d been to the library and gotten some decent information, something that is surprisingly difficult unless you know what to ask for.7751 hectares is a big area to get misplaced in but we managed to locate Boarding House Dam, the single most popular tourist site in the Watagans and did the easy walk there which takes you past the famous Moss Wall and downstream on Congewai Creek a little way, across a couple of bridges and into a dark, canopied section where one could imagine deep spiritual thoughts taking place if one was that way inclined. It even rates a mention in a weird site called...

Experience the vibrancy of the Australian bush!

by hridolfo

As someone who enjoys exercise, nature and culture I absolutely loved the Aboriginal Blue Mountains Walkabout experience. Evan was a very caring and safe guide to all. His highly skilled educating style really brings to life the energy and vibrancy of the ancient indigenous culture and the wild Australian bush. I found the day a perfect balance of learning and practicing traditional Aboriginal wisdom with moderate exercise and great relaxation. My personal favourite was a dip in the deliciously cool billabong. There are regular stops as a group so that you are able to listen clearly to every word Evan says and ask any questions. The relaxed pace also gave time to take any photos that you may want to. Thank you Evan, I felt like I stepped out of the modern world for a day and gained a lifetime of priceless spiritual wisdom.

The Breakaways

by iandsmith

Out east of Coober Pedy there's a special place on the Australian landscape. Most people simply drive through on the road, maybe stop at the main lookout, and then drive away. So, if you went there in your car and didn't walk, the following pictures will give you and idea of what you missed. Walking will give 3 to 4 times the pleasure, I can't recommend it highly enough. To stand beside those buttes is a special feeling. The colours will astound. Here's what I wrote at the time."In the distance you can see the range of hills that you have to pay $2.20 each to view; a worn plateau that beckons you onward such is its contrast to the surrounding land. I imagined it would just be that. How wrong was I.Even the first set have colour but it’s merely the overture to main symphony. The stark hues are staggering. From chalky whites to sulphur yellows to iron oxide reds the colours blaze in the...

Island Lagoon

by iandsmith

Normally those two words would conjure up images of the South Pacific, lazing on a desert island beside limpid salt waters......well, I can give you the desert, the salt water and it's up to you whether you laze or not. This place is possibly unique in the world. I've never seen buttes sticking up out of a salt lake. This special place is located a few kilometres west of Pimba in South Australia and is definitely off the beaten path because I had to go through a gate to get these shots.Hope you enjoy

had just alighted the bus at Circular Quay Sydney

by unravelau

And was thinking about what the new arrivals had seen when they first set foot on this spot.......(there is a monument to the arrivers here)..... While thinking I was looking up and marvelling at the tall buildings and thinking......they wouldn't have been here then, when I saw this old clock. Of course it's probably not that old either but definitely younger than its neighbour (behind it). I wonder if the architect thought about the clock and its 'position' in the city when he designed the newer building?

Healthy Waterways, South East Queensland

by hopang

We find this rather interesting - the rest of the world can certainly learn from South East Queensland, Australia! Here is how you can help.....Wash cars with a bucket and sponge on the grass, not the concrete.Sweep (don't hose) the driveway and paths.Compost kitchen waste and recycle rubbish.Don't pour oil and chemicals down the sink.Build a rain garden to reduce storm water pollution.Keep all kinds of litter out of the drains - it goes down to the river and out to the sea.Healthy Waterways has its office located at 239, George Street, QLD. You may e-mail to the following address for more information regarding Healthy Waterways:- hwwinfo@healthywaterways.org
