Take a Hike!

by JLNomads

We decided to go see what else was along the Sunshine Coast with some of our friends. They took us to Mount Coolum National Park. It is 280km to the top and it is a great hike. It is quite a hike for those who are not use to hiking, but if you take your time then anyone can do it! At a moderate pace you can make it up there in about 35min. You can see everything from Noosa all the way down to Sippy Downs and Buderim. It is such a great view up there, it is a little wierd because you see planes coming by and you are just as high as they are (there is an airport close by).

Walk right up to Kangaroos!

by JLNomads

Many people come to Australia to see the cities, beaches, and the wildlife. An easy way to see kangaroos up close and personal is to visit the University of the Sunshine Coast. It is only a 20 min. drive at the most from the coastal city of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. Here you can get within a few meters of kangaroos, and watch them hop through the open fields (without restrictions of fences). You start to feel like you are the ones being observed rather than the kangaroos. There are also many different species of birds (parrots, black swans, ducks, etc.) These are seen all over the campus, and in the surrounding area. At night you have the chance to see bats flying through the air also.Tip: If you sit down for a while, they will come quite close to you. This makes an excellent photo opportunity.

The Rock

by craic

I know this place exists. I have passed through it on the train to Melbourne. It is between Henty and Wagga Wagga. But it is not on VT's database - nor could I google up anything about it. According to google there is only one rock in Oz and that is Ayers (Uluru) Rock.(Oh and plenty of rock music, of course.)But it is a pretty nice rock, as one approaches the station one sees a big rock and one thinks -I know why they named this town The Rock.It is not off the beaten path. Of course it isn't. It is on the main trunk line between what used to be called Port Jackson and what was almost named Batmania. (John Batman had quite a bit to do with founding Melbourne.)But if it aint on VT's database and you can google nothing about it, it might as well not exist.Maybe the locals like it that way.Very nice rock, by the way. Quite noticeable.(People with more advanced google skills have told me you...

Most people miss all the interesting 4wd-tracks away from Stuart Highway; Bullitta Outstation, Rainbow Valley, Palm Valley etc. - BUT be careful. These people tried to cross a dried out river in a car without 4wd, which is stupid and very dangerous. Lucky for them I was passing through that area.

Gibraltar Range National Park

by iandsmith

This is a park that I visited many years ago and, quite frankly, it failed to impress. The problem was that I went to see Boundary Falls which, if you'd seen as many waterfalls as I have, aren't really very special. Nice, but not special. Thus it was that I came to virtually ignore the place. I was in error. Fortunately, I have since rectified that mistake. Boundary Falls is but one small bit of a park full of interest. It is sliced in two by the Gwydir Highway midway between Glen Innes and Grafton. One side has a predominance of waterfalls, the other has a predominance of granite though both are in evidence at both sites. In addition to Boundary Falls, Duffer Falls (recommended) are just a 3km walk down a fire trail and Lyrebird Falls, which is where Boundary Creek actually drops off the escarpment, have just had a new trail and viewing point put in by the National Parks and Wildlife.If...

Travelling by caravan

by PamRay

We travelled with another couple and on occassion went our separate ways and met up in different places on the way around Australlia, when you are unsure about areas it is always more reasurring to be with other people, especially going up the West Australian coast, where there is nothing for hours but wide open spaces, if you are on your own and staying at caravan parks just ask around and you will find someone wanting to go to the same place as you and you can then travel together.

The verandah town

by iandsmith

Tourism is the saving grace of many a country town and a place called Lockhart, in southern N.S.W., tries harder than most. The opening shot was taken when the bushfires from Victoria were sending their smoke northwards while the second shows yet another classic Aussie pub in the main street. The third shot is all the awards the town has won in the Tidy Towns competition while the fourth shows just what you can do with a partly disused bank. It's been turned into a B&B in some rooms while the bank still operates 3 days a week in another room. The last shot shows that even in the midst of the worst drought ever in the area there is still some colour to be found on the footpath.

Blackbutt Reserve

by iandsmith

Looking for that Australian animals experience? Like to get up close and personal with a koala bear? Chat to a cockatoo? Watch a wallaby? It's easy, just drop in to Blackbutt Reserve, right in the middle Newcastle's suburbs. Here is a natural experience you will remember. Like in the aviary where you walk through a double gate into their domain and they fly all around you (behind perspex)without being frightened. Then there's another, and another etc.You will find all types of birds here. Ones that I haven't seen anywhere else such as pheasanat coucal, banded stilts, certain pigeons and curlews. Then, there are others that you'll probably never see elsewhere like the tawny frogmouth. And let's not forget the Eastern Quoll, I'll bet you've never seen one of them in the wild. The area, of 182ha, is set in bushland with picnic and barbecue facilities and has several bushwalks if you want to...

A Typical 'over the back shed to the Jacarandah'

by unravelau

shot, taken from my daughters kitchen window in Sydney. It struck me as being very typical.........the rusty old shed roof and it being Jacaranda blooming time (November 2003) how appropriate is this? Maybe I should label the picture the neighbours bloomin jacaranda or something equally as smart.Grafton is the place to go for the Jacarandah display though................streets lined with the purple blooms and the ground carpeted too........simply amazing.

The Elliston experience

by iandsmith

There's not a lot, but it is a pleasant place for fishing, swimming, surfing or taking in the dramatic sandstone cliffs. It's almost unique though inasmuch as it's one of a limited number of villages in Australia that can claim to have been named after a scribe; this comes from its first name of Ellie's Town, after the writer and teacher Ellen Liston, a fairly obscure writer these days whose novels, The Stauntons and Auckland Marston haven't been in print since before the Second World War along with her short stories and verse - Pioneers: Stories by Ellen Liston, published in 1936, 51 years after her death. The area had been settled in the early 1840s, and the port had become known as Waterloo Bay after some settlers, in a brutal act of reprisal, rounded up a large number of local Aborigines and drove them to a cliff where they were confronted with either jumping to their death or being...
