The Bundanoon experience

by iandsmith

I quote here from my Bundanoon pages:"This spot had "wow factor" written all over it. The problem was, how to get to it. Though it was clearly visible from the trail, access to it was difficult and definitely only for the adventurous at heart. Getting a few clear photos wasn't going to be easy and that was reaffirmed during my scramble up the precipitous slope, littered with ferns and rotting vegetation that clung to the steep side leading to the small balcony beneath the overhang.I was so focused on getting there that when I realised I was in a safe area the effect of this wonder of nature was even more pronounced. It was spectacular, dominating and overwhelming. In 60 years of life I have never been frightened that a cliff might collapse at any moment.........until now.For sheer, and I use that word advisedly, drama, this cathedral like cliff takes some beating. The timeworn patterns...

A boat ride on Geike Gorge Granite history

by Fudge

It was stunning to see these limestone and granite formations along the Gorge. This was geike Gorge, named after British geologist, Sir Archibald Geike, in 1883. Witness the hundred over years history captured in these stones, rocks and spectacular formations that jut out from the river, as you mozzie along in a silent motor boat. The uniqueness about this boat trip was we would perch off on a hidden bank and voila, there would be picnic tables there and a spread of tea and muffins, which we carried in out boat, would soon make its appearence :) So nice to have a lil picnis when all u see are rock fomrations and river and more river.

The ooh aah factor

by iandsmith

We've all heard of places that take your breath away. To see Whalers Way when the seas are running high is to have such an experience. Actually, in any weather it's a knockout. If you liked the Great Ocean Road, you'll love this place. Similar scenery, only more compact and more varied; and you'll definitely find it less crowded. The 25 dollar admission fee sees to that.Situated below Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, this privately owned sanctuary and tourist destination is a sight to behold. I understate, it's many sights to behold. From the drama of Cape Wiles and its resident fur seals, to Black's Lookout, to fabulous Cape Carnot and its caves to Redbanks; this place is a feast for the eyes.Dramatic cliffs, pounding ocean, surf and fishing spots so wild they're scary and a backdrop of a windfarm beyond Redbanks. This place is unforgettable, go see it some time.

Lancelin Sand Dunes

by mad4travel

This was fun!I visited here as part of a tour to the Pinnacles desert. The sand is the purest white and the dunes enormous. Consequently tho, it was pretty windy. The bus was especially adaped for going on the dunes so would drive up and over the biggest ones. A word of warning tho, they do get stuck but it gives you more time to look around and take photos. The only downside when I was here was there were lots of flies. I swallowed one while huffing and puffing climbing a dune - gross!

Go surf a rock!

by mad4travel

Wave Rock is located 340 kilometres and four hours' drive south-east of Perth It is a natural land formation shaped like a huge collapsing wave, rising 15 metres above the ground and stretching more than 100 metres in length. Experts believe the rock is around 2700 million years old. It's likely that this remarkable shape was caused by the weathering of the rock when the area was once under the sea. The unusual shape has been highlighted by vertical streaks of algae which grew on the surface of the 'wave', forming dark brown and black stains.Best thing to do is get an aboriginal guide. It doesn't take long to see but they will tell you the aboriginal legends surrounding the area which is very interesting.Twenty minutes away from Wave Rock is another historical aretefact - Mulka's Cave, the home of Aboriginal rock engraving. The cave walls hold inscriptions that are around 30 000 years...

A different road into the Millchester Ntl Park

by Myndo

I have to admit, I don´t like to be driving the same road two times. Not if I can help it.Into Millchester Ntl Park there is exactly one way on the map, but wait: what does this dotted line mean? Private road. Ah, sh**§/°But my travel book knew a little more:"The Hamersley Iron Access Road Between Karratha and Tom Price is privete. Permits are available from the Hamersley Complex at Parker Point in Dampier during office hours Monday to Friday."So we tried this, and: really, we got the permission, we only had to watch a short film about secure driving on gravel roads (because that road is one) and sign a sheet. It is free, also. Although it is an access road and designed for heavy vehicles, it is quite easy driving and an interesting landscape, too. Don´t go faster than 90 km/h and turn on your lights. That´s about all.The picture shows the waterfall (dry at the moment) at Python Pool in...

South of Melbourne

by supercarys

If you're in Melbourne for a while or you want to explore the area, go south for about 40 minutes by car and you'll find Frankston. Frankston is a nice town with a lot to offer. It is far enough away from the city to feel as though you are somewhere else but close enough for a day trip. The locals are friendly, there are many parks and a nice safe beach to swim in with no huge breakers (waves) so it's ideal for kids or those who just want a swim. A lot of the parks are close to shops so you can easily buy a picnic lunch for the park or on the beach. There are plenty of great restaurants too, just take your pick for a nice, not-too-expensive meal.

Australia: Bicycling the Flinders Ranges

by Intrepidduck

One of the most interesting Outback locations in Australia to visit by bicycle are the Central Flinders Ranges. These are a particularly interesting geological formation of prominent quartzite and contain much wildlife. There are some moderate hills to climb if approaching from Hawker to Wilpena Pound, a vast natural amphitheatre of the Central Finders Ranges, located at the southern end of the Flinders Ranges National Park. Stock up on food supplies if travelling north from the town of Hawker where there is an excellent general store. The road between the historic mining township of Blinman, with its great Aussie pub, and via the Parachilna Gorge onto the Highway No 83 is rough and steep. Concerning bicycling it's a superb and scenic ride none the less and inspite of the challenge best to travel downhill from Blinman. There are some creeks to ford en route to Parachilna, which also...
