Bring a pair of stout walking shoes if you plan to do any walking / hiking. This will prevent most snake bites from reaching your foot.Bring both warm and cool clothes as the weather can change dramatically in spring and autumn. Australia has a big hole in the ozone layer so bring or wear sunblock if you are going outside, especially in the summer months. Very few Australians do not use sunblock so you will fit right in.

Don't forget...

by didgeridorien

Just bring a big and a small backpack. You can take the smaller one on tours, the bigger one can stay behind. It's just easier to carry around a backpack than a huge suitcase. Don't forget that Australia can be cold to, especially in the south. So bring a good sweater and rainwear. Walking shoes, sneakers and flipflops are the best to get around with. You can buy these small first aid sets that are great to get around with. You're better off to buy repellent and sunburn in Australia, because the Australian stuff works better. You can buy everything in Australia, you can usually load your digital photo's on the internet too. Just make sure to bring enough film or cards when you're going on a tour, it's such a shame if you run out! If you want to go camping in Australia, buy a swag! You can sleep outside and stay dry when it rains! Definetely buy snorkelling gear when you're visitting...

Don't forget your sunblock & moisturisers!

by xuessium

There is a big ozone hole up in the skies folks and Australia is lovely close to it. Especially during summer, unless you find the sensation of sunburn itchiness a great feeling or that you just adore folks touching that freshly over-baked raw tenderness of a burnt-out hide, better remember to load up on that sunblock (SPF30 and above) and that skin moisturiser and apply generously and frequently especially when you are one of those folks who tend to be easily grilled.

Buy an Aussie SIM card for your mobile (cellphone)

by mesoblonda

If you'll be traveling around, meeting with local VT'ers, making restaraunt reservations while on the go, I highly recommend an Australian SIM card. Incoming calls are no charge (a shock for this American) but you do pay a pretty penny for outgoing calls (another shock for this American). Calls to the US and Europe are cheap enough, making it possible for you to call your friends back home (working away), while you're on holiday! Make sure you have an unlocked phone with SIM card capability. You can order the SIM card before you leave, making it easy to pop in the minute you get off the plane.

Don't forget the high factor sunscreen!

by TracyG

A backpack is definately for the best, though I have done it with a holdall as well. For the long treks to the local bus station, when you can't afford a taxi, the backpack definately wins...... At least one set of clothes for clubbing, and general stops in cities. But elsewhere pretty much anything goes. A good pair of strong walking shoes and a pair of sandals (Teva's) will do you fine. Sunscreen and a high factor at that....... but apart from that, just your general first aid kit. Any of the cities and large towns should have everything that you could need, but once you get out into the outback, you are going to have a problem. So it is best to take more than you will need, before you leave. If you are considering sleeping outdoors in the north, then a mosquito net is a very good idea. A water bottle and torch, will both come in handy if doing any sort of camping tour, or hikes....

Pack for the sun.

by lou31

Shorts, T shirt and thongs are the traditional Aussie out door attire but you may need some 'good' clothes for eating out/ theatre etc. A jumper, jeans and warm coat for the winter months and and a decent pair of sandshoes for walking around in. Don't forget your 'togs' for swimming. Sunscreen with an SPF of 15+ is an absolute nesessity. Some insect repellent won't go astray and also a good pair of sunglasses. Bring plenty of film though you can buy it here. If you intend spending time out in the sun, particularly the beaches or the outback be sure to wear tops with sleeves. Even if only short ones they will help to prevent your shoulders from getting burnt. Remember that the sun reflects off the water and you can get burnt very quickly. And it doesn't have to be out to burn you. You can and will get burnt on a clowdy day. A good wide brimmed hat is a must. You'll regret it if you...

Keep the flies at bay!

by mad4travel

The one thing you are sure to find in the desert are flies. Its no joke that Aussies wear corks around their hats. The flies are unbelievably annoying, trying to get in your mouth, up your nose, in your ears and in your eyes. ( I swallowed one - not recommended)I came up with the "yasser arafat" look courtesy of my sarong as a good way of dealing with it. Others were being driven crazy as they had no means of keeping them off.You can buy nets to put over your hat in local stores altho there were none when we visited

A lovely little bug called 'Gardia' breeds in the water and it is a hideous gut bug to have. It will make you so Nausious and you'll be throwing up too. Mosquito Repellent or SERIOUSLY Suffer!

by Amelei

Pack light.Everything you could possibly want is available here in Austalia Light and airy clothes are a must, to cope with the inevitable 40 deg days.Cotton is great as it breathes, increasing air flow to the body and skin.A good pair of hiking boots as there are just so many beautiful unspoilt National parks and wonderlands to explore here in Aus.HAT- most important- wide brimmedLots of singlettes and shorts Mozie repellent A MUST ( you will thank me guys seriously!)Tweezers/ Tea tree oil- I say this for all you guys that want to do the bush walking/ get back to nature thing. We have ticks here which are these minute little buggers that like to crawl into your skin and they are a pain in the a$$ to get out. I found tea tree oil, if applied directly onto the skin, annoys the absolute sh1t out of these ticks and they crawl out. if that doesnt work your next option are tweezers. Always...
