Pack for cool wind and strong sun

by AKtravelers

The locals recommend a pouch. They are useful for carrying baby kangaroos, as shown in this picture. When entering Australia, make sure your himing boots are very clean, as they inspect them to ensure you're not bringing in microbes and insects from abroad. More importantly, check on line to see what items are prohibited -- there are lots! Australia has plenty of film at reasonable prices, so there's no need to stock up at home. Remember, Australia has the highest skin cancer rate in the world. Bring sunscreen! Furthermore, kangaroo island gets very windy with a breeze that travels over 3000 miles of cold antarctic ocean, so bring a windbreaker. If you want to do a nocturnal hike, which we found to be exhilerating, you should bring a flashlight -- preferably one with a red bulb or lens cover which allows you to observe the wildlife without startling them. We got caught out in the...

Packing List

by CandS

In summer (December to February) make sure you bring lots of cool clothes, but still a light jumper or something for nights. In winter (June to August) bring lots of warm clothes and a rain jacket of some sort. In my area we have two extremes...freezing cold winters and boiling hot summers. ;) Lots of sunscreen!!! Bug repellant too if it works for you. But of course you can buy both in Australia... Bring a wonderful camera to capture all the beautiful sites! :)If you want to buy film in Australia it is fairly cheap in shops like Big W...I get mine (Kodak 100) in packs of 3 (96 shots) for about A$11. Camping is great in Australia! All I take when I go camping is a tent, airbed, pillow and sleeping bag and food... Light a fire, use the cover of big tree as a toilet and you are right. ;)

Don't forget the CASH!

by darthmilmo

Just pack a whole lot of money. Everything is available down under! Australia is a first world nation and as such you can expect to find anything you need. So no worries mate! Just bring along a big wad of cash and have fun!

Protect your skin!

by colin_bramso

Wear a sun hat. Bring sunblock with the highest UV protection, or buy some as soon as you arrive. The sun is very fierce in Australia (and we also have the hole in the ozone layer above us) and it is very easy to get badly burnt very quickly. We also have a very high rate of skin cancer caused by the sun.

What to Take

by roamer61

Standard Depending on time of year and exactly where you'll be going. If coastal Queensland, bathing suit for the beaches. If the outback, long pants for protection from the elements. Typical. Bring insect repellent for the outback and other buggy areas, cream for bites. Bring plenty of film. Binoculars for wildlife, snorkeling gear for the reefs.

Make sure to get an adapter for your electrialplug

by Robert11729

Australia is very lovely all year in and out with temps ranging from 60 degrees to as high as about 95 degrees so always pack for summer because for most of americans 60 degrees is beautiful. Beware there are different Electrial Outlets in Australia most outlets have 3 holes which will not work with the american plugs.....make sure to buy an adaptor that can connect so you can use your shaver etc Bug Spray for camping,Suntan lotion for the beach and a hat and your set :)

Apply for a VISA using the Web

by cbrandlehner

Every visitor to Australia has to apply for a VISA first. Most travel agencies can arrange that for you but they charge some fee for that service.Using the ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) you may save some money. It is not for free but less expensive. This service is provided by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA), Australia. It worked fine for me, no VISA print in my passport but they saw my electronic VISA in their computers at the passport control.

It's all about the Sun

by TashieKitten

This is going to depend on your travel plans (backpackers or grand hotels) but you can always pack too much. I felt overloaded with 2 pairs of shorts, 2 pairs of pants, shoes, sandals and 5 shirts. Whatever you forget or really can't live without you can purchase in this modern country. Depends on where you'll be and what time of year. Bring your sunblock or buy it here. The Ozone isn't providing as much protection as it once did. You have an oppotunity to stop one of the most preventable cancers before it starts by making choice to wear sunblock. Plus, the suns UV rays cause wrinkles, and that's never attractive. If you're like me and not a super photographer but you really want to take underwater pictures then I would recommend buying an underwater one-time camera. Even with the exchange rate they're cheaper at home than you can find them in Australia.

OZ isn't always as hot as you might expect!

by windsorgirl

I highly recommend bringing extra warm clothes to Australia, even in the summer. I thought a sweatshirt and light rain jacket would do, but still found it cold. I had to borrow a polar fleece and almost wore it every day (at least in the evenings).
