If you go backpacking the best travelguides are 'Lonely Planet' and 'Let´s Go Australia'.Here you´ll find good tips for cheap hostels and activities.
Be sure to pack: Umbrella, hat, and sunglasses—since Whitsunday is a protected national park, there are no shelters from the sun, and no residents to sell what you forgot. October is hot but not unbearably humid, as it can be during the summer vacation season of December through February. Average daily temperature: 85 degrees. Water temperature: 75 degrees.

australia has all ranges of weather and placess, but mostely she's hot. bring a -* tent* short close* a few worm close for the desert nightes* insectes repellent* and sun cream* s rain coat for the humid times and ereas

I a great believer in wheeled luggage. I've tried backpacking and, compared to wheeled luggage, it sucks. A small backpack is handy but you can do untold long term damage to your legs (especially knees) if you carry big weights on your back. If you plan to be outdoors, bring or buy a sensible hat.As with most trips, make sure you have broken-in comfortable walking shoes. Remember also to pack some sunburn cream; especially if you come in summer. A polarizing filter is a must. If you come from the northern hemisphere you may find the light is brighter than what you are used to and the filter will give you much better results than you would otherwise get.It also highlights the colours as shown in this example. Australia is the melanoma (skin cancer) capital of the world - you have been warned.Part of the problem is the clear air. With no smog to protect you the sun's rays really bite.

One bag is all you will ever need, otherwise you will not be able to get on an internal airline without paying extra. We wanted to see as much of Australia as possible in as little time as possible. I would suggest taking one bag for two people if you plan on hopping around the country. Hiking boots, raincoat or umbrella for sure. If you are going out for the evening, find a 70's outfit. You will fit right in. We brought a RX cortizone and needed it after our dive on the reef. The currents were so strong outside the reef it made it impossible not to touch the fire coral...it hurts. We love visiting pharmacies in other countries. Zovorax is available (in small quantities)in Australia over the counter and is great for cold sores. If possible, bring a digital camera. Take all the pictures you want, review them and discard the dumb ones. Start again the next day. Bring an extra batter with...
Australia has different climates. If you go up north, take some light clothing, cause it will be hot. If you get there in the winter, don't forget rain gear, cause it is the rainy season then.In the middle (like the gold coast), in the summer it is hot, so light clothes, in the winter it can get down to 4 degrees celsius at night so don't forget a sweater and jacket. The same goes for Victoria, SA and TAZ, bring light clothes for the warm months (and a sweater just in case) and for the winter warm clothes, cause it can get cold. Mozzie repellent, especially in the north it is a must, but you can buy everything here. what do have???? what can you carry??? those are all the questions you need to ask yourself, because you can use every lens you have here, every film you want to take.
beware of the sun and the heat if you're not used to it. a hat is a real good idea... In all cities (but there are few cities in the outback) batteries and films will be no problem, btu if you are about to take color slides rather than films, bring them with you because they're uncommon (only in better foto-shops) and expensive (+12bucks for 24slides, speed 200...) insect repellant as always... and SUNSCREEN!
Travel light is my motto. Sent home (inexpensive by seamail) excess luggage as souvenirs and excess clothes you REALLY must or want to keep. Bring as few clothes as possible. New clothes are cheap in Auss, especially on the markets. Also a large chain of stores called 'The Warehouse'. But best of all is to go to the 'op shops' and buy whatever you need according to where and what time of the year you are there. You can than discard these clothes when you leave without having spent too much and your backpack has room left for other things. For toiletries the markets and again the large chain of stores called 'The Warehouse', excellent value! A large chain of stores called 'The Warehouse', they have EVERYTHING you need, including canned food. Excellent value! Souvenirs are best bought on the markets, anything from Caps (I bought some for $ 2,50 each) down to hiking boots and anything...
Pack stuff!! like MONEY.. The winters in Sydney was very mild. It was like 65 degrees in the dead of winter everyday. So pack spring like clothes and a sweater or jacket for the night. Im jealous of the weather over there. In Cairns however, you could pack for summer like weather year round. Bring Laxatives!!!! just kidding...bring stuff you usually take Cameras and lots of them. Video camera if you want. bathing suit and towel, and surfboard! stuff
