Restaurants and cafes all over Australia: Aussie hamburgers are hard to BEET

  • A burger with a beet. : ) - Australia
    A burger with a beet. : )

Note, on my "Australia" page, restaurant tips are going to be "food tips", rather than specific establishents. I'll talk specifics on the city pages. ; )

Australian hamburgers are quite good. You don't get any little puny piece of meat, you get a big old chunk of cow. And, they like to load them up with condiments, too.

Many of the goodies on your burger are universal....mayo, ketchup (called tomato sauce in Australia), lettuce, tomato, carrots, beets...

Carrots and beets? Yep, they're there a lot, too....especially sugar beets. At first, I thought to myself, what kind of bizarro world tomato IS this anyway? But, it was a beet, and they were on almost every top-end burger I had. I kind of liked it, too.

I may not start doing it at home, as I'd just as soon remain free of mental institutions. Beets aren't THAT high on the vegetable table of popularity in this country. But, Down Under,

it's hard to find a burger without a beet.

Aussie Burgers are fair dinkum, ie they're darned all right. : )

Prices for a top end burger were usually about A$8-9, which would include a nice plate of chips (french fries), too.

Australians seem to love their meat pies. They like to laugh at them.....I had more than one person insist that they're stuffed with "road kill", witchity grubs, and so forth. But they eat them up....

It may be the same way Americans feel about hot dogs. We don't really care to know EXACTLY what goes into them, but they're mighty good.

Same deal with meat pies. I had a couple in Australia, and I loved them. I had one that was "steak and mushroom". The steak was actually nice ground beef, which the Aussies call "mince". It had a few veggies....very few....and lots of nice, thick gravy. Sealed in a nice pastry shell, it was served piping hot. Very good, actually....

But the best one I had on my trip was bacon, egg and cheese. The bacon was more like what we Americans would refer to as thick, tasty ham. Again, the combo was pretty devoid of veggies, save an onion or two. But the gravy part was thick and satisfying.

And, this is cheap eats in Australia. You can get yourself a meat pie for A$3 to A$4 most anywhere.

Like I say, the best of the two I had was the bacon, egg and cheese. Maybe I should have tried the roadkill one. : )

Fountain Cafe: Dinner at the Fountain (Sydney)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • At the end of my first day of sightseeing in Sydney, I decided to have dinner in the neighbourhood of my hotel. So I walked along Macleay Street, and I noticed a big terrace at a small square with a fountain.

The fountain was the (famous ?) El Alamein Fountain. (In order to remember the battle at El Alamein in Egypt during the Second World War).

The big terrace was heated with big gas burners, which was not superfluous, as it was raining very hard and it was pretty chilly.

I order a T-bone steak - New York style with baked vegetables and potato pancakes. The meal was delicious.

As it was my first time visiting Australia, I wanted to try some local beers. So I did choose the Hahn beer. I do not know why (maybe it was happy hour), but the waitress brought two bottles, I had ordered only one, and paid also one.
But that was not a gift as the beer really tasted very bad, I believe this was the worst beer I did drink during my Australia roundtrip (I must also add that it was a Light beer maybe that was one reason)

I also thought wow, if this is the taste of Australian beers, well I will be drinking lots of Coca-Cola for the next weeks, but no no, luckily, I did discover some tasteful beers during my trip.

The service was quick and friendly.

T-Bone steak - New york style with baked vegetables and potato pancakes (Price : 19.80 AUS dollars)
    (10 AUS dollars = +/- 6 euros or +/- 7.5 US dolars)

Pyengana Cheese Factory: Best Cheese in Australia!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Cheese Factory at Pyengana is located on a small dairy town nestled inland in North East Tasmania. This factory sells award winning cheese and not one to lose an opportunity we stopped and enjoyed a few of the free tasting. We did buy a small cheese, which we ate a few days later.

The Cheese Factory also has a cafe where you can order some delicious tea, coffee, and milk shakes.

    The cheese of course!

Daly Waters Pub: Most Visited Pub in the Northern Territory
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The historic Daly Waters Pub is a historic mark that lies near the Stuart Highway. It has been a key feature of the town’s history. The town of Daly Waters was established in the 1800's as a stop for those crossing Australia. The nearby waterholes now owned by a private cattle station a few km away served as a much needed brake stop for travelers. In the early days of airplane transport, Daly Water served as one of the many refuel stops for international airplanes en route to Sydney or Melbourne. Therefore, it was the first glimpse foreigners got of Australia. Imagine that! You can imagine that the thirsty and hot travelers quickly made their way to the pub nearby for a pot of beer to quell their thirst. During WW2 it served a distinct purpose when the air force was station in town. We met an old man in town who told us about the local prison that lies about 1 block away from the pub in the backyard of the Community Building. Several of us went exploring and came across the jail cell. It was eerie looking inside and thinking on how many outlaws spend a night on that cell. We then went to the park across the street, which even has a tennis court!

A cold beer from the bar :).

The man behind the desk of our hotel (Maclaey Apartments - just across the street), advised us to cross the street.

There we found The Zinc, a modern looking cafe which was serving breakfast (and other meals - I think).

There was also a big terrace, in order to have your meal outside. But this was not the right time of the year - it was too cold and too wet.

Breakfast was ok, a good plate - as it was our first breakfast in Australia, it was hard to say something on the price, also sometimes a big city is a bit more expensive then elsewhere . . .

I had scrambled eggs with bacon and toast and a cafe latte.

Scrambled eggs with bacon and toast - 9.50 AUS $

  • "A Dingo's Got My Cappuccino!"
    by Intrepidduck
    Send Photo to a Friend
It was a welcome relief after seeing a sign blazzing that magical word of the Italian language "Cappuccino" at only 3 Km distance away. It had been 6 exhusting days of cycling through the desert since my last cafe made coffee, and that was the roadhouse instant variety. This was enroute along the Oodnadatta Track just before hitting the civilized town of William Creek, population 10.

In recent years the espresso variety of coffee has made inroads to some remote Outback communities. Alice Springs is however a bit of an ecception since it has for over a decade now had a flourishing cafe culture, now listing to about three institutions. Two were existing when I made my cycling trek through that town in 2002. It was at the Cafe Mediterranean where I got back to the routine of morning lattes and afternoon macchiatos. It was also a chance to sit back in a non touristic space and claim a table to catch up on reading and writing. It turned out that some of the cafe's waitresses knew of friends of mine, and friends of friends and thus became friends of mine! Alice Springs being that kind of place. It has been mostly through the people who have moved here who have brought along the little pleasures of life such as espresso coffee.

At the old Hermannsberg mission station museum, in the Western Macdonell Ranges, you will find the best apple strudel in a 1800Km radius, while at the Yalara Resort, near Uluru, one can find excellent espresso coffee, but at inflated prices. Their arn't too many other option out here, however there is the Uluru - Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre which serves filtre coffee and cakes.

Darwin's "Roma Bar" a real institution when it comes to vibrant little city cafe culture. This place is ancient for Darwin's standards as it began in 1980, then the new Darwin was only a few years old. Much of the original was flattened by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Above this Cavenagh Street establishment you'll find "Dusty Jackets Books" secondhand. Useful coffee table reading material at the end of a long journey.

The Coffee and cake selection at Bar Doppio, is located off Todd Mall, in a small laneway, Alice Springs. Its almost worth travelling halfway across a continent for! The seriously caffeine addicted bicycle tourist should be well supplied for a long journey.

Opium Den: Thai Food in Sydney
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The second evening, again we decided to have dinner, not so far from our hotel. Most of us were a bit tired, by the jetlag, and by the long day of sightseeing.

So we did choose this modern looking Thai restaurant along Macleay Street.

There were a lot of great dishes on the menu.

The service was great, en was the background music.

One thing was a bit strange to us as they did not serve wine or beer, you only could get water. If you wanted something stronger, you needed to bring it yourself, from a bottle store.

Like this we did buy some bottles of Coopers Pale Ale beer.

    My favourite dishes were:

    - Goong Spring Rolls (4) - Seasoned chicken and King Prawn wrapped in crispy pastry served with sweet chilli sauce) - 9.90 AUS$

    - King Prawn Fried Rice (Thai Style fried rice with King Prawns) - 18.90 AUS$

    (Exchange rate : 100 AUS$ = 60 Euro or 75 US$)
