Löwenbräu Keller: Sydney ~ My Oktoberfest

by starship

After a nice afternoon cruise on Sydney's Harbor and wishing to take advantage of the lovely but waning afternoon light, we decided to have drinks and an early dinner at the "Löwenbräu Keller". During our walks around The Rocks, we passed the "Löwenbräu Keller" Restaurant several times and people sitting at the outside tables always seemed to be enjoying themselves. We arrived in time to choose from the afternoon menu. The selections were limited but the prices were somewhat more favorable than dinner prices would have been. For a time we sat outside in a sunroom, but decided to move inside to enjoy more of the "hofbrau" experience and I'm glad we did --- the decor was loaded with cheerful Bavarian charm.Service was very good and we received our meals quickly. The dish of frankfurters, German potato salad and a side salad ($16.50) was OK, but not quite as good as I had imagined it might...

Driftin' Coffee Bar and Restaurant: Cairns ~ Pleasant Place on the Esplanade

by starship

Cairns seems like the quintessential tropical destination and with that comes lots of tourists, especially young people. It was fun to watch the evening parade of visitors in search of the perfect place to have dinner. Many, if not most, drifted toward the Esplanade, the lane closest to the waterfront. Frankly, we found ourselves there nearly every night as well. There are a lot of restaurants to choose from to be sure. Our first dinner in Cairns was at the Driftin' Coffee Bar and Restaurant where the sidewalk seating was very appealing place which lent itself well to catching the evening tropical breezes, people watching and a nice meal for a good price. The "sandwich board" advertised special of steak, salad and fries for under AU$14 pp was just just the ticket and just what we ordered. Our friendly, young British waitress promptly took our order and brought us something cool to drink....

Loaves and the Dishes Cafe: Leura ~ Popular Cafe in Garden Village

by starship

When we booked our Oz Trails day tour to the Blue Mountains, we knew that lunch was not included in the price but that we would make a lunch stop in the scenic village of Leura. Our driver/tour guide told us there would be many restaurant and cafe choices, but he recommended the "Loaves and the Dishes" for its "homecooked" food and fair prices. When we arrived the Loaves and the Dishes was already full to capacity and the line to order was very long indicating to us just how popular the cafe is. While standing in line we were able to make our choices based on what was available on the posted menu and in the cold cases. Finding an open table wasn't easy but one became available just before our meals were ready. Rick was very pleased with his Pumpkin and Spinach Tart (quiche) and small salad, and my steaming, hot bowl of pumpkin soup was tasty and very filling. With a large bottle of water...

HOW TO BEHAVE: Restaurant or Home dining

by balhannah

This isn't a Restaurant tip, but one on about what to do if at an Australian Restaurant, or if you have been invited to someone's home for dinner.Often if you are invited back to somebodys place, it will be for a typical Aussie 'barbie' (BBQ).Usually guests bring wine or beer for their personal consumption, and arrive on time, NOT LATE, only if it is a large gathering when 15 minutes late is ok. It is good manners to ask the hostess if you could bring a dish, usually you are told it is not needed, so you may like to bring a box of chocolates or small gift instead. In Australia, we eat with the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right while eating, and when finished, we lay our knife and fork parallel on our plate with the handles facing to the right. We always keep our elbows off the table and your hands above the table when eating. Dress is very casual for BBQ's and good casual or...

Hamilton Bakery: Dying for a pie

by iandsmith

This seemingly nondescript place in the middle of an almost nondescript village in Tasmania might surprise you by the number of people coming and going. The attraction inside is arguably Australia's best pie, or pies. I was tipped off about this place and went to try it. As soon as the baker gets the pies out they're sold which is even more surprising when you realise that they cost about twice as much as you'll pay anywhere else in Australia but, as I've always said, "Make a better pie and they'll beat a path to your door".That's exactly what's happening here and, from personal experience, I can tell you that they are as good as any pie I've had anywhere. Treat yourself, you won't be disappointed. Pies, pies and more pies - I loved it!Perhaps, after all, I have eaten at the best pie shop in Australia......but I'll just keep checking in case!

Aussie cuisine?

by ant1606

I haven't learned much about Australian cuisine. Maybe there isn't one. Probably clinging to broad British customs, but the tropical climate to the north and sandy soil in other areas may dictate produce of different nature. Whatever doesn't grow locally must obviously be imported. Extensive farmland has sufficient resources for sheep and cow. It is said that there are 2.5M cattle heads around Rockhampton, Queensland, alone.I've heard that sheep population once outnumbered humans by a 1:8 ratio - eight sheep per person, while recent immigration has lowered such ratio to 1:4 or 1:5.Local food has likely benefited from post-war immigration. Asian-style cuisine has flourished most everywhere and it was my staple for most of the time except for a couple of fish-and-chips meals in towns where it was the only available alternative to colorful "wobbly gumboots" pubs.Curiously, I've noticed that...

The Shangri La's Cafe Mix: Sydney ~ Excellent though Pricey Buffet Breakfast

by starship

If you feel like splurging on a wonderful buffet breakfast in Sydney, look no further than Cafe Mix at the Shangri La Hotel. Breakfast at Cafe Mix is a all you could want and more. The sleek restaurant with a warm and sunny vibe bustled with tourists and business travelers the morning we visited, but it did not feel over crowed. The restaurant offers different stations for cereals, cold cheese and meat selections, all types of fruit and nuts, and yogurt. Even more --- hot breakfast choices such as eggs, quiche, sausages and bacon, breads, Danishes, sauteed mushrooms, broiled tomatoes, etc. For something out of the ordinary, you can also have specialty items made to order such as waffles with fresh fruit drizzled in chocolate, omelets, pancakes and "specials of the day." There is a selection of items especially geared to Asian palates too.Juices can be had self-serve. Specialty teas and...

City Extra Restaurant: Sydney ~ Open 24 Hours a Day!

by starship

Our last full day in Australia was spent touring more of Sydney on foot with VT'er Aussienet and her husband, Michael. As we were all ready to stop for a bite to eat by mid-afternoon and we had just seen the Sydney Opera House, Annette suggested "City Extra" Restaurant behind the wharves at Circular Quay. It was an excellent choice and not only did we enjoy our meal here, but the location couldn't have been better. We were eager to treat Annette and Michael to a nice meal since they had taken time out of their week to come all the way to Sydney to show us around town. The restaurant offers a nice little spot for dining outside on a terrace but also two inside levels as well. We sat on the top level inside and were rewarded with an unexpectedly great view of the Harbor Bridge in addition to a quiet spot to chat. The waitress appeared quickly with a large and varied menu printed in a...

Sydney ~ The G'Day Cafe: Sydney ~ Decent Food at Decent Prices

by starship

As we would soon find out, food in Australia is frightfully expensive. So we were extremely lucky to find the "G'Day Cafe" on our first full day in Sydney. Waiting for our room to become available, tired and hungry, we found our way down to lower George Street in The Rocks area of Sydney. We looked at the displayed menu of several places and found that the G'Day Cafe offered the best prices we had seen. A small place that feels like home, the G'Day Cafe is popular with locals as well as tourists who are lucky enough to stumble across its doorstep. I later found that even Frommer's recommends this cafe!We ordered our breakfast at the counter and were served piping hot eggs, Canadian bacon, whole grain toast with jam & butter at our table for $8 each plus 2 flat white coffees for a total of under $20. In Sydney, that is an incomparable value! The cafe offers plenty of seating inside but...

Hard Rock Cafe: Sydney

by Arial_27

For those who've never been to a Hard Rock, its 'basically' a world reknowned glorified burger joint with a rock atmosphere and good music in the background. To be fair the food is usually pretty good! Hard Rock cafes were invented in London and there are now 150 locations in 53 countries (as of 2012.) There are only 2 in Australia - the other one is in Surfer's Paradise. The SydneyHard Rock is located at Darling Harbour, a short walk from China town. Its quite massive, with a downstairs and upstairs, very large gift shop. I enjoyed the service and food, almost right over the water too.

mmm.. veggieburger :)
