The Melbourne Tram Car Restaurant: Dont miss this dining experience

by RogerLB

Starts from its base a few minutes taxi ride from the Swanston Hotel opposite the Casino. It is advisable, I would say essential, to book this tour. I would also recommend the later sitting at 8.30pm. The internal furnishings of the tram reminded me of the Orient Express. Dinner is served almost immediately after starting off and the evening continues until about 11.30pm. The dinner is a five course meal with red or white wine from Victoria provided by very accomodating and helpful onboard staff. During dinner the tram trundles its way around Melbourne, so everchanging scenery as you dine. The menu does change but I had Cream liver & cognac pate as an appetiser, grilled Kangaroo loin as an entree, Prime eye fillet of beef as a main course, a selection of Australian cheeses, warm sticky date pudding for dessert and coffee. Each is served with the appropriate sauces and vegetable or fruit...

Various restaurants: Eat it or leave it!

by WestCoast79

For some reason (probably because of some snobby sue-happy tourist) many Australian restaurants don't allow customers to take home "doggy bags." The waitress at our restaurant (forgot the name, but it was in Cairns) told us that someone had sued them when they had taken their left-overs home, left them out over night, ate them and then got sick! Ha! Not a big deal, but if they tell you they can't wrap up your left overs, now you won't be totally shocked. The waitress, however, let us take ours home after signing off responsibility on the check.

Waterfront Restaurant: Yummy Seafood!

by Limporock

kebab at wharf 6: Kebab

by MayaWilmot

If your main concern is to eat halal food , you can find it here at wharf number 6. just be careful when you purchase the fries and potato wedges because they fry it with pork. If that is not your main concern, by all means enjoy all the food : ).

Take your pick: Lygon Street

by iandsmith

Here is probably Australia's best known culinary street. It sits on the outskirts of the Melbourne CBD and has restaurants crowding the pavement for a few blocks. You will get hassled on the sidewalk, just like if you're in the Near East, so be prepared.Personally, I love it and that's part of the reason I go.The prices are competitive and the food is very filling. Sometimes it's a good idea if you can see just how much they pile onto your plate by checking out another table's order before you get yours because otherwise you might waste a lot of it. Some of the dishes are substantial. You can get many different types of cuisine here but I lean towards the original Lygon Street restaurants, the Italian ones.

A "Must-Try" Australian Delicacy

by DueSer

Australia has a great delicacy called the "lamington." It is a piece of cake dipped in chocolate and covered in coconut. The chocolate holds in the cake's moisture and the three very sweet but very different flavors of cake, chocolate and coconut mix together in your mouth for a true delight. Each lamington is approximately 4 inches high, wide and deep so it's not something you can just pop in your mouth. Get a fork and sit down for a few minutes to enjoy them. Many restaurants have them on their dessert menu and a lot of arcades (shopping malls) have a bakery or pastry shop and they all seem to carry lamingtons. Stopping for something to drink and a lamington is a terrific way to catch your breath and rest your aching feet while sightseeing.

Bridgewater Bay Beach Cafe: Lunch near the Great Ocean

by filipdebont

Our second day along the Great Ocean Road (from Warrnambol to Robe), we stopped in Bridgewater for lunch. The Bridgewater Bay Beach Cafe was located on the beach, from the terrace you had a splendid view over the big Ocean... unfortuneattely for us it was to cold to have lunch at the terrace.I had an open Sandwich with smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers and onions - the sandwich was so delicious that I even forgot to make a picture of it (to post with my VT tip)The restaurant was open 7 days a week. This restaurant had also an information section, where you could hire mountain bikes, Ice/baits for fishing sales, pick nick backpacks were available, Seals by Seals Tours, Boogie Board and Surf Board for hire and numerous hiking trails for all abilities Open Sandwich with smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers and onions - 8.50 AUS$

Maceys Bistros: All you can eat in Warrnambool

by filipdebont

Our driver/guide advised us this restaurant. And I must say that it was an excellent choice. It was one price : 12 AUS$And first there was soup, then the Pasta buffet and then the dessert buffet.Of course this was heaven on earth for the big eaters. You could fill up your plate as many times as you wanted. The food was delicious. And we finished our meal with a great dessert with fresh fruit, chocolate pudding and ice cream . . . yummy The Lasagne

Yat Zies: Lunch along the Great Ocean Road

by filipdebont

On our trip from Melbourne to Warrnambool, along the Great Ocean Road, we stopped at Yat Zies cafe in Lavers Hill.Yat Zies is famous for its gourmet pastries. At Yat Zies we had a quick lunch, as we still had to drive a long way and there was still a lot to see and to do that afternoon.I had a delicious Chicken Schnitzel Roll and a cafe latte.Next to the lunch area there was also a small gift shop (and small snacks) and a Tourist information section.Outside in the garden there were several platforms to feed the colourful parrots. Chicken Schnitzel Roll - 6.50 AUS$Cafe latte - 3.0 AUS$
