Ristorante Maldini: Italian MAMAMIA!!

by unaS

The best food I ate in Australia. Italian like the best Neapolitan Trattoria. We returned there the next evening to see if it was perhaps just a fluke. Nope. Just as good on the second evening. Would have eaten there *again* if we had another day in Tasmania.Good sized portions. Reasonable rates.Seating indoors with a couple of tables outside. They do request a reservation, but we just stopped by when we discovered it and had no problems being served. Spinach & ricotta gnocchi w a roasted tomato & basil sauce topped w shaved pecorino Huon Valley mushroom ragu w baby spinach & pinkeyes (Just checked to see if they are on the internet - Yup - and like everywhere else their prices have risen but, it seems to me, no more than average still.)

Brunetti City Square: Lunch in Melbourne

by filipdebont

During our sightseeing tour in Melbourne, we could not miss the busy and beautiful Swanston Street, like this we arrived at the City Square (corner of Flinders Lane & Swanston Street). In the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral, there was a restaurant with a terrace, so this looked like a great place to have lunch.I did choose the Crepe Semplice - speciality of the house - Speciality Savoury Crepes with Ham and mozzarella cheese.I tasted good, but for a big man as I am, well I could eat more, but on the other hand it was okee for my diet . . Crepe SempliceCafe latte

Rub!con: Melbourne : Dining at the Rubicon

by filipdebont

After a whole day of sightseeing in Melbourne, we wanted to have a good diner. So we entered the Rubicon (written Rub!con) Cafe - Bar - Restaurant along Errol street. It looked a very trendy place, with a big bar, and a section with seats to talk and enjoy your aperitif; it looked a bit like a lounge bar. There was a menu card, and the specialities of the day were written on a black board on the wall behind us.I did choose the Balsamic marinated Kangaroo fillet cooked medium rare with Tuscan potatoes, rocket, semi dried tomatoes and red vinegar reduction. It was deliiiiiiiiiscious. For desert I had a piece of lemon cake - jummyThis was certainly a place to return. Kangaroo fillet - 22.90 AUS$Lemon Cake - 7.50 AUS$

by filipdebont

After the rooms were divided, the laundry was done; we decided to go out for diner. We crossed the busy Victoria Street and like this we arrived in Errol Street - a street full of bars and restaurants. We did choose to eat at Errol’s. This restaurant looked modern and spacious. There were plenty of delicious dishes on the menu to choose.I started with Nachos - corn chips topped with melted cheese, tomato salsa, sour crème and avocado dipMy main course: Chicken Parmagiana - topped with Napoli sauce melted mozzarella served with chips and saladIt was delicious . . . and my main course was too big, I could not eat it all, however I am (was) a big eater, it was too much . . .(The Greek salad in the photos was eaten by my room mate Jan) Nachos - 9.50 AUS$Cicken Parmagiana - 17.50 AUS$2 Victoria Bitter - 10 AUS$ (5 AUS$ per drink)

Kellys Cookhouse Cafe: Glenrowan - lunch with Ned Kelly

by filipdebont

So on Day 8, we stopped in Glenrowan for lunch - Glenrowan the place where the local hero Ned Kelly was finally caught. In Glenrowan there were several places to eat, we where with a big group so we did split up, like this we all got our food quicker then to eat all in the same place.I had my lunch at the Kellys Cookhouse cafe. I was not really hungry so I did choose the Hot Roast beef Roll with some chips and to drink a café latteAfter lunch there was still some time to sit and relax and enjoy the sun, och the warmth of sun did so good especially after a very cold morning walk in Beechworth. Hot Roast Beef Roll - 4.50 AUS$Chips - 1 AUS$Cafe latte - 2.50 AUS$

Beechworth Bakery: Breakfast at the Beechworth Bakery

by filipdebont

As we wanted to visit Beechworth early in the morning, we needed an early breakfast. So the Beechworth Bakery was the ideal place for that, also it was near our hotel in the same street - and it was open from 6am to 7pm.There was a great choice on cakes and sandwiches, so indeed it was not so easy to choose. The service was great and pretty quickI went for the toasted sandwich on thick bread with bacon, eggs, and cheese and to drink a café latte in a Mug.After our early morning visit at Beechworth I returned to this Bakery to buy some chocolate cakes and some delicious croissants to eat at lunch.PS : Motto on the paper napkins : Treat your body like a temple, have another cake - Tom O'Toole Bacon, Egg and Cheese Toastie - 5.20 AUS$ Caffee latte in a Mug - 3.40 AUS$

The great aussie pie

by iandsmith

So, since I've mentioned pies, where are the best? Well, I can't tell you all, but I can tell you some.If you're on the N.S.W. Central Coast you should aim for True Blue Aussie Pies at The Entrance and The Bremen Pie Shop at Umina, the latter is my personal favourite. In Port Stephens you must eat at Red Ned's, at North Haven it's the Addictive Pie Shop, near Kempsey it's Freddo's at Fredrickton, Tea Gardens pie shop is great and, of the franchised chains, Ridgy Didge and Michelle's are worthy of sampling. For wood-fired bakeries try the one at Dorrigo in N.S.W. and the one at Ross in Tasmania, all very tasty!Probably the pick for me though is Beechworth Bakery. There are four outlets with this name run by the same man. I've visited two, one at Echuca and the other at Beechworth itself. See tip further down for the full story. Try the apple squares from Beechworth Bakery. We're talking...

Beechworth Bakery: Australian legend

by iandsmith

What's to do in Beechworth I hear you ask. Well, as one other VT site will testify, a lot more than you can see in two days. The one place you must not miss is the Beechworth Bakery. In fact, if that was all the town had to offer I'd still go there and I'd still have to queue up to get a pie.If Australia is a land of pie shops, this is one of the finest. The owner even wrote a book about his success. My first experience came at the Echuca branch when we went in for a late breakfast. I was amazed, I could count 12 staff in this outlet on a Sunday morning in a country town and it was just short of being packed with customers.Tom O’Toole has been described as John Cleese on speed. A self confessed kindergarten dropout, he is so sought after by the financial world that he delivers over 100 lectures a year at over $6,000 a pop. O’Toole bought the bakery business over 20 years ago. He had...

Brisbane and Melbourne: South Bank

by iandsmith

Two of the major cities in Australia have completely redeveloped the southern banks of the rivers the towns were originally situated on.Both have heaps of restaurants overlooking said rivers where you can dine internally or A la carte your way around and watch the world go by.The Brisbane one happened mainly as a result of Expo which necessitated redeveloping the south bank so they could accommodate the world's fair. When the fair was over they had a ready made area where people could spend a whole day either eating, using the children's playground, visiting the museum or sampling some of the other activities. All in all, a wonderful public space. Melbourne had no such excuse but did it anyway with a similar result. Sitting amid the sculptures watching the cruise ferries cutting their wakes along the Yarra is definitely one of my fondest memories of Melbourne.Of course, there's much...

Tanswell's Commercial Hotel: Beechworth - dining with Ned Kelly

by filipdebont

After a long drive we finally arrived in Beechworth. We had dinner in the Tannswells Commercial hotel (which had also a restaurant). After we made a choice from the menu, we had to go to a back room to command our food (and to pay it). Also for the drinks we needed to pick them up from the bar in the next room.At first this was a bit strange, but afterwards it looked very handy, as sometimes it can be difficult to obtain separate bills whenever you go eating with a big group. The plates were well filled and the food tasted very good - so were the beers.Above the bar there was a copy of the armour of Ned Kelly. This was a nice place to spend the evening. Mixed Grill : A massive grilled selection of steak, saussage, chop, bacon, eggs and tomato served with gravy. served with chips and vegetables. (20.90 AUS $)
