Kaesler Vinyard: Shiraz Goes Best with Kangaroo

by AKtravelers

With three weeks in Australia, it's hard to pin down a favorite restaurant. However, if we had to choose, we would pick the Kaesler Vineyard in the Barossa Valley, just northeast of Adelaide. We ate outside on a balmy day, enjoying top-quality wine with our delicious meal.Eating in a vineyard with grapes over our head and a soothing pond in view added to the enjoyment of the meal. Before your meal, be sure you step into the tasting room to sample the vinyard's production. This will help you choose the right wine to have with your entree. Or maybe right wines! It was tough to just have one glass. Kangaroo! I ordered kangaroo meat four times in Australia, each time prepared a different way. It tastes like a very lean steak, so order it the way you like beef (rare, medium rare, etc.). In 2002, the Australian gov't will allow the culling of 6.9 million kangaroos -- many for food. I think...

Andersen's of Denmark: Fantastic hotdogs!

by bluesmama

Being danish we spotted the silhoutte of H.C. (Hans Christian) Andersen even before we noticed the shop itself. The owners were so nice. They had originally come from Denmark, which is famous for it's "old fashioned ice creams", and then opened an ice cream shop here. The ice creams were great but the best thing were the hotdogs! They imported the real danish roasted onions but they had to make the remoulade themselves because it would go bad if they had to import it. These hotdogs were a meal from heaven! And the owners were so friendly, really liked a good chat. -Wonderful! Hotdog!

home cooking...: Aussie Recipes

by Kate-Me

Thought I'd use this section to share a few Aussie recipes - some traditional, some more modern. The first one will be "Banana Bran Muffins".Ok, so Australians didn't invent muffins...but this low fat recipe I believe IS one of our adaptations.... they're great, and they only have 120 calories per serve)Ingredients: 3/4 cup skim (low fat) milk1 cup bran3 ripe bananas, mashed1 1/2 cups plain flour2 tablespoons sugar4 teaspoons baking powder4 tablespoons margarine1 egg1/4 cup sultanas (or mixture of sultanas & dried apricots)Method: Combine milk, bran and mashed bananas. Set aside for 15 minutes to absorb. Then, sift in the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, beat the melted butter and egg until combined. Add to the wet mixture and mix lightly, till just combined.

Unique Aussie Dining

by keeweechic

Morton Bay Bug - is a small crayfish from the waters of Queensland and northern Australia. The flesh is soft and succulent and full of flavour.Muddie - a large mud crab found in the mangrove wetlands of Queensland and New South Wales. Reputed to be the most delicious crab in the world. Mullet - a fish of the Mugilide family. The Red Mullet are demersal fish and sue their barbels to search for food. In Australia the Sea Mullet are not regarded as good eating.Vegemite - a brown yeast extract which is spread on toast and sandwiches. Loved so much by Australians that it is virtually a national food.Witchetty Grub - a large, white grub that lives in the roots of certain types of gum trees. Greatly prized by Aborigines as good "tucker".Yabby - freshwater crayfish which can be found in rivers, streams, lakes, dams and even some temporary waters. They have a very sweet meat and the claws of...

After a full day of activities such as trekking and swimming during the Top Ender tour, make room for a delicious dinner made over a hot fire. Pyengana Cheese Factory: Best Cheese in Australia!

by darthmilmo

The Cheese Factory at Pyengana is located on a small dairy town nestled inland in North East Tasmania. This factory sells award winning cheese and not one to lose an opportunity we stopped and enjoyed a few of the free tasting. We did buy a small cheese, which we ate a few days later. The Cheese Factory also has a cafe where you can order some delicious tea, coffee, and milk shakes. The cheese of course!

Parachilna: Don't miss the local cuisine!

by darthmilmo

Our stop for the night was at Parachilna, which is made up of a Pub with 5 local residents. Parachilna is famous for its pub and for its dinners which often have an Australian animal in the menu. Since we were part of a backpacker tour, we got to cook the meat ourselves! It was a fabulous dinner consisting of meat from Australian animals and cooked by Khani, our guide. We had an Emu burger, a Camel sausage, a Kangaroo steak, and potatoes with onions. Mind you, camels are not native. They were introduced back in the 1800's as explorers tried to explore the Red Center. Today, with over 500,000 wild camels, Australia has the largest population of its kind in the world. Going back to the Kangaroo stake, being an amateur cook myself, I assisted Khani as he was cooking the Kangaroo. The trick is to cook each side of the steak for 2 minutes tops so as to leave the red blood in the center....

Daly Waters Pub: Most Visited Pub in the Northern Territory

by darthmilmo

The historic Daly Waters Pub is a historic mark that lies near the Stuart Highway. It has been a key feature of the town’s history. The town of Daly Waters was established in the 1800's as a stop for those crossing Australia. The nearby waterholes now owned by a private cattle station a few km away served as a much needed brake stop for travelers. In the early days of airplane transport, Daly Water served as one of the many refuel stops for international airplanes en route to Sydney or Melbourne. Therefore, it was the first glimpse foreigners got of Australia. Imagine that! You can imagine that the thirsty and hot travelers quickly made their way to the pub nearby for a pot of beer to quell their thirst. During WW2 it served a distinct purpose when the air force was station in town. We met an old man in town who told us about the local prison that lies about 1 block away from the pub in...
