You never know where the Coles bag will end up! by darthmilmo There are several first rate supermarkets and stores in Australia. Coles, Woolworth, and IGA are the most common supermarkets out there. IGA is slightly more expensive then Coles and Woolies. I prefer the last two as they offer good quality at cheap prices. You can sometimes buy snacks and cheap stuff at Crazy Clark Stores.
Both Coles and Woolworth sell excellent reusable shopping bags that may save you stoprage space and hassle out of your luggage. Check them out! Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkDirections: There is a Coles, Woolworth, IGA or a smaller supermarket on every sizeable town and city. Just ask a local for diractions. Who knows, perhaps you'll make a friend of it!

Victoria Market by darthmilmo The following day, I visited the historic Victorian Market. Tagged as one of the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, it doesn't disappoint. Imagine a market that can take you back in time to a period where the merchants came to town to sell their many goods and products. You can buy anything from inexpensive souvenirs, to cheap veggies/fruits, to impressive works of art, to clothes, and much more. This market has it all. To top it off, it was one block from the hostel! Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft

The Queen Victoria Building by Paul2001 It has been called by Pierre Cardin "the most beautiful shopping centre in the world" and whom am I to argue. This is a stunning shopping arcade unlike anything that I have seen in the "New World" countries. The arcade was built in 1898 over what was at onetime the Sydney Markets. Throughout the last century it was used for various purposes such as municipal offices and market hall. Not until 1984 was it turned into the shopping centure that it is today. The building features wonderful woodened railings, a great overhead clock and antique elevators. Within the arcade itself are over 200 shops. The shops are open from 9am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday. They stay open until 9pm on Thursday. On Sunday they are open from 11am to 5pm. There was no Sunday shopping in Sydney during my visit in 1987 so I feel ripped off.
Opals galore here. Lots of quality shops that will satisify all tastes. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: The Queen Victoria Building takes up a whole block. It is bounded by Market, Druitt, George and York streets.

Rocks Market (Helen on the far left) by darthmilmo My friend Helen (hailun in VT) gave me a tour of downtown Sydney when we came across this wonderful market in Sydney’s oldest neighborhood, the Rocks. If you're into the historic aspects of Sydney, then you'll enjoy the old buildings in and around the Rocks. One can find all sorts of arts and crafts in this Sunday market. King Cross Car Market by darthmilmo An area a lot of backpackers and long term travelers encounter is the shady neighborhood of King Cross, where you can actually see a bit of everything. I actually felt totally safe there at all times, but some prefer to miss this place at night. My main reason for going was to shop for a car at the infamous King Cross Car Market. It was an arduous process taking over 3 days of talking with shady characters and looking at total junk-on-wheels vehicles. In the end, I came away with a vehicle. One of the advantages of using this market is that they ran through all the paperwork and requirements on purchasing a car. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by Robachu1 Claims can be made after you have passed through Customs and Immigration outward processing at : the TRS facilities at international airports at Sydney, Brisbane, Melboure, Perth, Cairns, Adelaide, Darwin and Gold Coast; cruise liner terminals at Circular Quay and Darling Harbour in Sydney, Cairns, Darwin, Fremantle, Darwin and Hobart.
The Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) enables you to claim a refund of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) that you pay on goods you buy in Australia. The refund only applies to goods you take with you as hand luggage or wear onto the plane when you leave the country. It does not apply to services or goods consumed or partly consumed in Australia. Unlike other tourist shopping schemes, such as duty free shopping, you can use the goods before leaving Australia.
The refund will be paid on goods totalling $300 (GST inclusive) or more, bought from the same store, no more than 30 days before you leave Australia. You may purchase several lower-priced items from the one store, either at the one time or over several occasions within the 30-day period, provided the total purchase amounts to $300 (GST inclusive) or more. You will have to ask the retailer to consolidate these lower-priced purchases onto a single tax invoice. Leave a Comment

Tim Tam Biscuits- for the Chocoholic Fix! by swings It isn't the shop that's important, it's the chocolate fix! Just go to any grocery store or shop that sells Arnott's cookies!
Buy Arnott's Tim Tam biscuits (cookies)! The company describes them as "the most irresistible chocolate biscuit", and I have to agree with that, in any of their several flavors! Another good product that I just tried yesterday is their Quatro Hazelnut Delight biscuit. Heavenly! Get your chocolate fix with one of these products.... ;)
They are only about $2-3 per package. Leave a Comment
