It all depnds on how shopaholic you are. me not being one spent around 50aud.

Historic town: Berrima

by iandsmith

Shop? There's lots of them. All designed to remove money from your wallet. Dresses, pies, fruit, antiques, art, lollies, beer. You name it, it's all here in a village preserved for tourists and they come here in their hundreds. One pastry shop won a State award as the best pastry shop, you could spend your money there. My favourites are the arty crafty shops with bits of everything in them, often just in converted houses so wandering around the old rooms is an exercise in itself. My advice - just go there, it's wonderful

Queen Victoria Building (QVB): Anything you want

by martin_nl

The QVB must be the biggest department store of the city. You can geteprtty much everything here. From clothing, ice cream and coffee to books and art. My favourite shop here has to be the gallery by Peter Lik. He has the most stunning photographs of Australia, and all panoramic. It's great to spend some of your time here browsing through his pics. If you want to buy, mind you, the prices are quite steep.

Clothes in Richmond melbourne

by Rumi-fan

Shopping visitors to Melbourne must visit Bridge Road, Richmond (suburb). You can take a tram from the city centre or buses from most suburbs. Lots of name brands at lower prices. Many "seconds" stores - but you cant tell why they are seconds. Bargaining is ok but you wont get much off the price.

Airport: Inflatable animals / Sydney Airport

Harbour Town & DFO: Factory Outlets Galore

by AUE

There are now in most big cities in Australia huge commercial centres for direct factory outlet shopping.HarbourTown outlets: Perth, Adelaide, Gold CoastDFO outlets: Cheltenam, Essendon Airport, Spencer street-coming soon (all in VIC); Brisbane Airport; Sydney.Don't get me wrong. These are not your typical day-to-day DFOs as what you find at all airports. The "airport" venues I mentioned above are not IN the airport but close to it. You will find basically all major brands have their outlet shops there. Polo, Nautica, Portmans, Laura Ashley, all brands of kitchen ware, shoes like Nine West, Billabong, Quicksilver etc etcIt's massive and there is a lot to go through (at least 2-3 hours spent there!). You need to find the bargains of course. Some items are the same price as in town, but many things are reduced. Make sure that if you are a tourist, you FIRST go to the information counter...

A music store in OZ (or online elsewhere....): Into music? Check out Xavier Rudd

by 850prc

One of my favorite things to do when I visit a foreign land is to sample the music. I am a music nut myself, and I'm always looking to discover someone new to add to my collection.Xavier Rudd is an interesting fellow. I learned about him on our overnight campout at Uluru. One of the backpacker guys in our group (Ryan) and our guide (Stuart) thought this Xavier Rudd guy was the bee's knees. At the time, I thought he was pretty good, but I have to admit that the combination of too much whiskey and too poor of a sound system didn't make it right, mate. : )When I returned to the US, I got onto Amazon.com and found myself a copy of Xavier Rudd's CD "Solace". This is good stuff, folks. Describe him? Oh my goodness, where do I start. He's Bob Dylan + Gordon Lightfoot + Neil Young + Bob Marley + a funky digerydoo bass + a few scoops of Vegemite. It's a peaceful music that's perfect for a long...

Shop in the Markets !

by 850prc

Most Australian cities that we visited had some sort of fresh market entity somewhere within their midst. One of the nicest was in Adelaide. We found the quality and selection in these markets to be vastly superior to the chain grocery stores for such items as meat and fresh vegetables. And, the prices were much more reasonable.I realize that my visit is a very small sampling of what constitutes the Australian grocery system, and there are certainly fine supermarkets and grocery stores throughout the country. But, DO visit the markets. (We call them farmer's markets here in the US) Fresh fruits, nuts, vegetables, meats, baked goods Varies, but the prices seem better than in the local grocery stores....and the quality was much more appealing.

The Daybreak Calling Card: Save money on international phone calls II

by 850prc

Much of what I need to say about calling cards was covered in the previous Ozcall Card tip. This is just another card, the Daybreak Card. I figured it was a good name because no matter when I seemed to call the states, it was always not quite daybreak back home. 17 hours is a lot of time difference. :)Again, this is the most important bit of advice for using these cards....ASK FOR A LIST OF ADDITIONAL NUMBERS. There are many more local access numbers..... they just don't have room to print them all on the card. If you don't ask for these additional numbers, you might have trouble phoning your loved ones when you're out in the bush near Uluru. ; )To USE the card, put 40 cents into a pay phone, or use a regular phone to call the local access number for the area in which you're calling. Follow the prompts to get your English or other language directions. When you finally get ready to dial...
