Melbourne Markets

by keeweechic

Queen Victoria Market (Vic Markets) is a great outdoor (but partially covered) market. During the week mainly fresh produce is sold but on the weekends the goods extend to clothing, leather, souvenir goods amongst other things, all at very good prices. You can also buy fresh flowers and indoor plants, fashion jewellery, compact disks, handicrafts, authentic Australian artefacts. There are also small shops inside as well. Don't forget to try the donuts. Sundays are really busy days.Address: Elizabeth Street. Shopping Melbourne

by keeweechic

Chapel Street is located to the south of Melbourne - one of Melbourne's trendiest shopping areas. Chapel Street has an abundance of fine cafes and restaurants. Bridge Road in Richmond - A seventh heaven for factory shops for popular and designer clothes, bedding goods, shoes galore and of course great cafes - I loved shopping here - great value.Brunswick Street in Brunswick - a bit Bohemian, alternative and different shopping, great cafes (likened to Greenwich Village NY)Ackland Street in St Kilda is retro and different shopping. There are fabulous continental cake shops to die for. Great cafes.Melbourne Central is a Modern Shopping Complex featuring Daimaru, a Japanese department store. The Complex also has the world's biggest glass gone built over the top of an old shot tower which is also a feature. And in the Area where the cone is located is a large clock that opens up and plays...

Market day at the Rocks (Sydney): Sydney's most interesting crafts market

by darthmilmo

My friend Helen (hailun in VT) gave me a tour of downtown Sydney when we came across this wonderful market in Sydney’s oldest neighborhood, the Rocks. If you're into the historic aspects of Sydney, then you'll enjoy the old buildings in and around the Rocks. One can find all sorts of arts and crafts in this Sunday market.

King Cross Car Market: Go shopping for a used car

by darthmilmo

An area a lot of backpackers and long term travelers encounter is the shady neighborhood of King Cross, where you can actually see a bit of everything. I actually felt totally safe there at all times, but some prefer to miss this place at night. My main reason for going was to shop for a car at the infamous King Cross Car Market. It was an arduous process taking over 3 days of talking with shady characters and looking at total junk-on-wheels vehicles. In the end, I came away with a vehicle. One of the advantages of using this market is that they ran through all the paperwork and requirements on purchasing a car.

Victoria Market (Melbourne): Largest Market in Victoria

by darthmilmo

The following day, I visited the historic Victorian Market. Tagged as one of the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, it doesn't disappoint. Imagine a market that can take you back in time to a period where the merchants came to town to sell their many goods and products. You can buy anything from inexpensive souvenirs, to cheap veggies/fruits, to impressive works of art, to clothes, and much more. This market has it all. To top it off, it was one block from the hostel!

Coles and Woolworth: Supermarkets

by darthmilmo

There are several first rate supermarkets and stores in Australia. Coles, Woolworth, and IGA are the most common supermarkets out there. IGA is slightly more expensive then Coles and Woolies. I prefer the last two as they offer good quality at cheap prices. You can sometimes buy snacks and cheap stuff at Crazy Clark Stores. Both Coles and Woolworth sell excellent reusable shopping bags that may save you stoprage space and hassle out of your luggage. Check them out!

Aussie Money

by CandS

Australian money is made up of dollars and cents. We have $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes, and 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 & $2 coins. There are plenty of ATM machines in most cities and towns throughout Australia and almost everywhere takes credit cards or EFTPOS these days. Travellers cheques are also accepted in many larger companies. The major banks in Australia are the Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, ANZ and National Bank...

Duty Free stores and more: Opal Buying

by Kate-Me

Opal is one thing that's great to buy in Australia, since we have the biggest opal mines in the world. It's still expensive to buy, even if you buy it in Coober Pedy where it's mined, but with duty free at least you'll make some savings. Australia is also a great place to buy sheepskin products. Depends on the size and quality of the opal and colour content (opal with a lot of red is more expensive)

Victoria Market: Souvenirs At Victoria Market

by Kate-Me

For souvenirs, Victoria Market is a good place to go. Overall, Melbourne is a good place to shop. Depends on what you want. In the city there are department stores and boutiques and the Bourke Street Mall. If you get out into the suburbs, then you'll find big shopping centres like Doncaster Shopping Town and Chadstone, where you can shop for AGES, and all under cover. Boomerangs (but shop around - some are ornamental only and will not return if you throw them)Digeridoos - may be difficult to find in the city unless you can find a shop specialising in aboriginal souvenirs, where you'll pay more but at least it will be authentic. Overall, I find goods in Australia are very reasonable when compared to Europe, so you can shop for whatever you like and probably get it cheaper. Depends on what you want. Clothing varies from department store style to boutique prices. I find new books quite...
