  • Canoeing at Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) - Australia
    Canoeing at Nitmiluk
    (Katherine Gorge)
    by darthmilmo
One of the best places to do some serious canoeing is at the Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. There are trips to accommodate all time and money budgets. The park has 13 spectacular gorges. You can rent a canoe on site for a few hours, half a day, a full day, or even several days. The most you’ll be able to reach in a day is the end of the 3rd Gorge since there is a 45 minute portage crossing between the 3rd and 4th Gorge. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful experience. I highly recommend it!

There are other interesting multiple and single day canoeing trips in Australia. On the top of my mind you can take a 3 day journey across the Everglades near Noosa. You can also do a multiple day trip at the Atherton tablelands near Cairns.

Sea Esta - Great Barrier Reef and Yongala

  • SS Yongala Wreck - Australia
    SS Yongala Wreck
    by darthmilmo
I boarded the "Sea Esta", a live-aboard dive boat operated by Pro-Dive in Townsville. The crew were Kim (skipper from Australia), Nathan (young Kiwi instructor with a thick accent), Charlie (Britt instructor), and Glen (Aussie cook). I spent some time with the fun crew and friendly internationally diverse passengers. We all had a pleasant time this trip. We all enjoyed some fun dives followed by interesting conversations. In the evenings we relaxed and had fun.

This is one of the best dive trips in Australia. You get to dive 8 times in the Great Barrier Reef. Then, on the return journey you get two wonderful dives on one of the most impressive wrecks in the world, the SS Yongala Wreck. Read all about it on my relevant “Must see” tips.

The daily routine for the trip went as follows. You wake up to a light breakfast, followed by the 1st dive, followed by the 2nd breakfast, followed by the 2nd dive, followed by lunch, followed by the 3rd dive, followed by afternoon tea and biscuits, followed by the a night dive (4th dive), followed by dinner and dessert. At times I felt they were just feeding us in there...hehehe. Alas, as in any dive trip, we were always exercising. In a way, diving is like running... imagine running for over 40 minutes 4 times a day! That's how hungry we get :).

Rum Runner I sailboat - dive trip to Holmes Reef

    Reef

The dive trip to Holmes Reef was Amazing. The Holmes Reef lies about 250 km off the East Coast of Australia in the infamous Corral Sea. It lies outside the Great Barrier Reef. Geologically speaking, it is part of a giant volcano that erupted and caused the ocean floor to rise from 1000 meters below to within a meter or less of the surface. There is no island in here, but there is a giant reef. Since it lies so far away from land it has twice the visibility of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). In fact, we enjoyed over 30 meters visibility on all of our dives! It also has similar sea life to the GBR.

There are not that many companies that will venture this far from Australia. I booked a trip with Corral Sea Divers (Cairns) on board the Rum Runner I sailboat. The crew members were fantastic and the fellow passengers on board added to a wonderful trip.

The trip out to Holmes Reef is not easy. It took us over 16 hours battling choppy and wavy waters. The first glimpse of the reef makes it all worth it. The blue crystal waters abound on all corners. There are no other boats on site either since it is so far from the mainland. This means that the dive sites are quite good!

The dives on Holmes Reef were phenomenal. The dives range from 1000 meters drops where we got to dive to about 40 meters to shallow 10 meter dives. We saw a great variety of sea life as well.

The highlight of the trip came with an excellent rush of adrenaline as we partake on an incredible shark feed. We dived in the Predators dive site, so call for being the location of the shark feed. The idea is easy. We all got underwater and the captain threw a huge fish kebab to attract the sharks. We then got to see them eat it from a secluded vantage point 10 meters underwater at a sand bed. Several sharks and fish came within a few centimeters from me! Among the sharks we saw, we saw white tips ranging from 1 to 2 meters, whaler sharks ranging from 1 to 3 meters, and two silver tips (one about 3 meters the other about 4 meters). It as a scary site!

Stellar Maris-Whitsunday Is and Great Barrier Reef

  • Diving at the Whitsunday Islands - Australia
    Diving at the Whitsunday
    Islands
    by darthmilmo
VT was created so that travelers can share their experiences. Sometimes we had wonderful experiences, but other time things don’t go so well. This are the times when knowing and sharing this information helps the most. With that said, I want to warn would be divers against diving on the Whitsunday Is (WI). Why? Well, simply put the diving in these parts of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is not as spectacular as further north (Townsville) or further south (Bundaberg).

If you are only going to go to Arlie Beach (AB) and you are a diving aficionado then you may want to give it a try. You have two options if this is the case: Take a sailboat trip that offers free diving or take a live aboard dive trip. For information on the 1st choice, then please refer to my AB and WI tip above. Otherwise, keep reading for information on my trip to the GBR aboard the "Stellar Maris," which is a live aboard dive ship operated by Reef Dive in Arlie Beach. Out of the 10 dives we had (8 day dives and 2 night dives) we only got to dive 3 times in the actual Great Barrier Reef (GBR). The rest of the time was spent diving on two spots in off an island in the WI. Why? Well, the companies in Arlie Beach will use any excuse to cancel a dive in the outer GBR. Common excuses I’ve heard are that the weather is too choppy, or that their boat has a malfunction. They used both of these excuses on me and many others as well.

The Bait Reef (part of the outer GBR) is one of the best dive spots on the East Coast. Our 1st dive was at the Cluster of 4, where we enjoyed over 15 m of visibility. We dove through corral bommies, cliffs, and even a tunnel. We got to see a huge 1.5 meter barracuda, several barramundi cod, a small Maori wrasse fish, a hexagon rock cod, and more. Our 2nd dive, which is one of the best dives I’ve ever done, was at the Stepping Stones (corral bommies). We spotted 2 turtles, 1 white tip shark, 1 ray, 1 giant potato cod (over 2 m in length), several tomato rod cods, several polka-dot cod, several crown of thorns, and more.

If you're in Melbourne in January I absolutely recommend a visit to the Australian Open Tennis Championships.
It is a very special occasion with a great atmosphere at Flinders Park.

There are so many places to do some serious treking, or as they say down under, bushwalking, in Australia. My favorite multi-day trek was the Thompson Trek in Hinchinbrook Island. My favorite singe day trek was climbing to the top of Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. Check out my must see tips to get more ideas.

OK.. this is where I do a bit of serious name dropping.. LOL...
This is me fishing with Pearce Brosnan's Dad in Law... between Hervey Bay and Frazer Island...
The fishing in Queensland waters is fantastic.. whether off the beach or pier, or you go out on a boat..
Some of my favorite catches are, Snapper, Whiting, Golden Trevally, Red Emporer, Coral Trout, and Sweet Lip.

You will need some rods/poles, the best place to get these in Hervey Bay is....

    Fisherman's Corner.
    On the Esplanade,
    Scarness.

Ask for 'Mark' ( Studdy ) also my son in law...
and tell him Susie sent you.. and to give you a good deal... LOL....
What he doesn't know about fishing, isn't worth knowing..

I was in Melbourne on that day, and was surprised the traffic ran so smoothly. I was heading to the Hard Rock Cafe.. ;-)

  • I took part of a surfing lesson with Black Dog surfing in Byron Bay. Similar to other surfing schools in OZ, they proudly guarantee you to stand or you get your money back. I was a bit skeptical, but eventually I managed to stand two or three times. Surfing is common all through the East Coast and South Coast of Australia (when in season). The lessons vary according to the quality of the school and the technical level of the student. If you’re already an expert all you need is a board, some wax, and perhaps a wetsuit to enjoy the waves! Otherwise, join the thousand of tourists that get a lesson each year.
