Snowy Mountains

by iandsmith

It's surprising when you're overseas talking to people and you tell them that you were skiing recently in Australia. Surprising for them that is, as most people are apparently unaware that there is snow down under. In fact, it covers a larger area than Switzerland (but they don't have beaches). The two most popular areas are Perisher and Thredbo in N.S.W. and Falls Creek and Mt. Hotham in Veictoria.Perisher is far and away the biggest. What used to be three snowfields is now four, all connected.Skiing in Australia isn't cheap. A shorter season than in the better known northern hemishpere fields and less population are the main causes. For around $100AUS you get a ticket which gets you on the skitube (a train linking you with Perisher, Smiggins, Blue Cow and Guthega) and covers your day's skiing.Tickets to all other fields are cheaper but not by much.Thredbo has the longest run when it's top...

Surf in Australia

by roxy-surfer-gurl

Surfing in Australia is like baseball in the United States. If you don't know how to surf and you go there, you aren't looked down on. I was quite surprised when a few locals took it upon themselves to teach a newcomer they had just met the basics. It is a wonderful sport in a wonderful land and I would recommend it to anyone. Bring a surfboard and a wet suit (not black or dark blue if you can find one so the sharks don't think you're a seal). Also, get an instructor to go with you if you are a begginner.

Bathing delights

by iandsmith

Along the Aussie coastline, particularly in N.S.W. there are ocean baths. They cost nothing to swim in, are run by the local councils and are very popular in summer. This particular one is at Merewether in my home town, Newcastle, and is seen at a time when the swell was moderate and the tide high.Sometimes the younger amongst us will go and play where the sea meets the pool for a bit of adventurous fun but generally the baths are a benign place with plenty of room to stretch your arms and stroke away.

Diving and snorkeling in Australia

by Myndo

There are a lot of Places from where you can go diving or snorkeling in Australia. The most famos place to do it would be on the Barrier Reef. When you stay on the east coast you will most probably start from Cairns or a place south of it.If you want to start diving it will be cheaper if you are learning it somewhere south of Cairns - the more south the more cheap it is said to be. But if you want to make trips to the Barrier Reef they will take longer as from Cairns itself. If you are travelling the west Coast of Australia there are also some wonderful places. E.g. around Exmouth Coral Bay is a small town, an excellent place to spend a few quiet days and relax. It has a reef very close to the beach (hence the name), actually it starts right 5m from the beach. And it is really beautiful, like swimming in a zoo aquarium.Ningaloo Reef is also a Natural Reserve Make sure if you learn divinig,...

And then there is Rugby..

by Sweetberry1

Rugby would have to be a favorite in Queensland... much like Aussie Rules in Victoria... you can go to a live match, or watch it on tv.. Perhaps a can of beer in the hand, while watching this sport.. LOL.

Golf... Another favorite Aussie Sport

by Sweetberry1

Golf is a favorite with Aussies, both, males and females. There are many world famous courses throughout Australia, and all towns and cities in Australia have great golf facilities. No need to bring your own clubs.. you can hire everything here. You might like to bring a caddy though

Fishing

by Sweetberry1

OK.. this is where I do a bit of serious name dropping.. LOL... This is me fishing with Pearce Brosnan's Dad in Law... between Hervey Bay and Frazer Island...The fishing in Queensland waters is fantastic.. whether off the beach or pier, or you go out on a boat.. Some of my favorite catches are, Snapper, Whiting, Golden Trevally, Red Emporer, Coral Trout, and Sweet Lip. You will need some rods/poles, the best place to get these in Hervey Bay is....Fisherman's Corner. On the Esplanade, Scarness. Ask for 'Mark' ( Studdy ) also my son in law...and tell him Susie sent you.. and to give you a good deal... LOL....What he doesn't know about fishing, isn't worth knowing..

Aussie Rules Football

Aussies are crazy about their sport... and Aussie Rules football is really big, especially in Victoria. You can catch a game in Melbourne, at the MCG. if you are into sport. (During our winter)
