Australian Rules Football

by AKtravelers

THe two biggest sports in Australia seem to be Rugby and their own peculiar brand of football. The Aussie Rules game seems to be most popular in the southeast, but I never got to see a match when I was down there. Still, you can see children tossing or kicking the ball in parks all over the country. Next time I go, I want to see a game -- even if I won't understand it.

Flemington Racecourse - Melbourne

by keeweechic

Flemington Racecourse was founded in 1840 and was laid out along the banks of the altwater river. Today it is home of the Victoria Racing Club and host to Australia's greatest horse race, the Tooheys New Melbourne Cup held on November 5th every years. The country literally comes to a standstill for those few minutes of the race. Oaks Day (or Ladies Day) is held the following Thursday. All the finest and well as whackiest garb comes out for the Melbourne Cup Day.

Pinjarra

by keeweechic

Pinjarra, south of Perth is just one of the many sites for sky diving in Australia. Because Pinjarra is at sea level you get a true jump of whatever altitude you choose (to a maximum of 14,000 ft). You need to be there well in advance of your jump to be fitted out in your suit and harness and go through the training session. For a tandem jump, you get a 20 minute briefing which is required to show you exactly what is involved and what to do. You are suited up and then start with a plane simulator and are told how to climb out of the aircraft, how to position your arms and how you will free fall out. They then put you on a contraption where you are lying on your stomach and positioning your arms and legs as if you are in a freefall situation.

W.A.C.A. Ground

by keeweechic

WACA stands for the Western Australian Cricket Association and the grounds is home to many international, national and local cricketing events. The all time record for total attendance at the grounds is 84,142 people at a test match between Australia and England in 1970. this was the first time Perth appeared on the international test circuit. The WACA is floodlit for the day/night games.

MCG - The Melbourne Cricket Ground

by keeweechic

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is a major venue for most sporting and entertainment events that are held in Melbourne. Melburnians are fanatical with their Aussie Rules Footy. Outdoor concerts are also held there from time to time. While I was dragged along to the odd footy match (but in the comfort of a private box), no one had to drag me to one of the concerts there. The MCG is also home to the Australian Gallery of Sport which records Australian sporting history and the Olympic Museum, with memorabilia dating back to the first Olympics in 1896.

Rum Runner I sailboat - dive trip to Holmes Reef

by darthmilmo

The dive trip to Holmes Reef was Amazing. The Holmes Reef lies about 250 km off the East Coast of Australia in the infamous Corral Sea. It lies outside the Great Barrier Reef. Geologically speaking, it is part of a giant volcano that erupted and caused the ocean floor to rise from 1000 meters below to within a meter or less of the surface. There is no island in here, but there is a giant reef. Since it lies so far away from land it has twice the visibility of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). In fact, we enjoyed over 30 meters visibility on all of our dives! It also has similar sea life to the GBR. There are not that many companies that will venture this far from Australia. I booked a trip with Corral Sea Divers (Cairns) on board the Rum Runner I sailboat. The crew members were fantastic and the fellow passengers on board added to a wonderful trip. The trip out to Holmes Reef is not easy. It...

Surfing

by darthmilmo

I took part of a surfing lesson with Black Dog surfing in Byron Bay. Similar to other surfing schools in OZ, they proudly guarantee you to stand or you get your money back. I was a bit skeptical, but eventually I managed to stand two or three times. Surfing is common all through the East Coast and South Coast of Australia (when in season). The lessons vary according to the quality of the school and the technical level of the student. If you’re already an expert all you need is a board, some wax, and perhaps a wetsuit to enjoy the waves! Otherwise, join the thousand of tourists that get a lesson each year.

Rugby

by darthmilmo

The Rugby World Cup 2003 was held in Australia. Although the English won, Australia put in a well fought game. The cup itself was wild. I didn’t see any game life, but as the paragraph below shows I did get to see some of the important ones. The semi-finals games were awesome. In a true tale of wits, the underdog Wallabies (Australian Team) beat the favorite "all blacks" New Zealand team. Let me tell you, from someone who hardly knows Rugby, it can be an interesting sport to watch. I have a feeling I’ll try to catch the world cups from now on. It is held every 4 years, similar to the FIFA soccer world cup. Although it has a lesser following then the FIFA cup, it still puts a hell of a bang! I had vaguely followed it since it started in Oct. As it was nearing the end, though, I joined the masses that went into bars or found a TV to see it. The Rugby World Cup was won by England....

Horseriding in Bingara's Gwydir River Rides

by darthmilmo

We stopped early that night at Bingara, another small town. I joined several of the other passengers on a 3 hour horse ride. It was an interesting experience as they were using the "English" horseback riding method, not the "Western" method I was used to back home. This method of riding a horse is prevalent in Australia. The prices to rent a horse range from $30 AUS per session (1-3 hours) and upwards.

4wd on Frasier Island

by darthmilmo

Frasier Island is one of the best places in Australia. The best way to explore the island is by driving it yourself. Avoid the big buses and go on it on your own. You will have a better chance on finding that secluded beach in one of the many inland lakes. Plus, you will bond with your travel mates like you never imagined. Do watch the warnings and drive safely.BTW, I managed to get a good package that includes a Frasier Island self-drive tour, a ride on a yacht through the Whitsunday’s, as well as other perks. If you’re planning on visiting Frasier Island and the Whitsunday Islands on one trip, then make sure you take advantage of the inexpensive packages offering both tours. If you loved this, don't stop here... There is plenty of places to explore on a 4WD. Try Kakadu as well.
