Sailing the Whitsunday Islands

by darthmilmo

I managed to get a good package that includes a Frasier Island self-drive tour, a ride on a yacht through the Whitsunday’s, as well as other perks. If you’re planning on visiting Frasier Island and the Whitsunday Islands on one trip, then make sure you take advantage of the inexpensive packages offering both tours. From Arlie Beach, I boarded the New Horizon, a beautiful sailing boat. We left the harbor at AB and headed straight to the Whitsunday Islands on what turned out to be a wonderful trip. The islands were spectacular, the water was crystal clear, and the weather was usually nice and warm. It is true what they say, the best way to see the Whitsunday Islands is by sailing. Give it a chance!

Stellar Maris-Whitsunday Is and Great Barrier Reef

by darthmilmo

VT was created so that travelers can share their experiences. Sometimes we had wonderful experiences, but other time things don’t go so well. This are the times when knowing and sharing this information helps the most. With that said, I want to warn would be divers against diving on the Whitsunday Is (WI). Why? Well, simply put the diving in these parts of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is not as spectacular as further north (Townsville) or further south (Bundaberg). If you are only going to go to Arlie Beach (AB) and you are a diving aficionado then you may want to give it a try. You have two options if this is the case: Take a sailboat trip that offers free diving or take a live aboard dive trip. For information on the 1st choice, then please refer to my AB and WI tip above. Otherwise, keep reading for information on my trip to the GBR aboard the "Stellar Maris," which is a live aboard...

Snorkeling

by darthmilmo

It is true what they say, you sometimes see more snorkeling then diving. In between dives, whenever we had some leftover energy (which is not common) we went out snorkeling. I also took on snorkeling from the shore of various islands or beach towns I visited: Great Keppel Island, Magnetic Island, and Moreton Island come to mind. On one occasion, while traveling on the Venus II, my friend Sandra and I saw even more wild life snorkeling then what we saw diving. I remember we started of by following a turtle that showed us the way to a giant sting ray. Then, it in turn led us to 5 more turtles in a row. Finally, we saw a small white tip shark before we had to swim back to the boat.

Diving – PADI

by darthmilmo

So, you paid an enormous amount of money to go to Australia and now you’re looking into diving. After all, the Great Barrier Reef is among the best places to do so on Earth. How do you dive you ask? Who do you trust? In my opinion, the best and most professional certifying agency out there is PADI, which operates in over 100 countries. They offer intense short courses for you so that you can become a novice or advance diver in no time. Check out their webpage at www.padi.com.Where to dive??? Well, there are several choices in Australia. I mention a few spots on the Great Barrier Reef I visited. But there are others, particularly the impressive Ningaloo reef in Western Australia. Regardless of where you choose to go, make sure you do the most of it. You get what you paid for. If you go on a one day trip, you will be packed with 50-100 people that want to go diving, snorkeling, or just...

Bushwalking Down Under

by darthmilmo

There are so many places to do some serious treking, or as they say down under, bushwalking, in Australia. My favorite multi-day trek was the Thompson Trek in Hinchinbrook Island. My favorite singe day trek was climbing to the top of Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. Check out my must see tips to get more ideas.

Canoeing

by darthmilmo

One of the best places to do some serious canoeing is at the Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. There are trips to accommodate all time and money budgets. The park has 13 spectacular gorges. You can rent a canoe on site for a few hours, half a day, a full day, or even several days. The most you’ll be able to reach in a day is the end of the 3rd Gorge since there is a 45 minute portage crossing between the 3rd and 4th Gorge. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful experience. I highly recommend it! There are other interesting multiple and single day canoeing trips in Australia. On the top of my mind you can take a 3 day journey across the Everglades near Noosa. You can also do a multiple day trip at the Atherton tablelands near Cairns.

Scuba Diving

by tini58de

The Great Barrier Reef is just an open invitation to go scuba diving! It is an awesome place!!!You can book special diving tours with local operators, or you can even go diving on a boat trip to the reef, as we did. We went out to the reef and then we were asked, if we wanted to go diving (for certified divers), if we wanted to try to dive (for beginners), if we wanted to go snorkeling or go on a glass bottom boat. All of it was a lot of fun!In the web I found an interesting site about diving for the handicapped, so I am including that website on this page.

Diving

by mrserious

As Australia has so much coastline there is diving to be done all around the country. I've dove on the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, and I've dove in Darwin, Sydney and Western Australia. I enjoyed it all, but the visibility is poor in Darwin.

Fishing

by iandsmith

I love fishing. Generally, I'm an estuary man or a rock fisherman, since I don't own a boat. Apparently, from what I can gather, Australia isn't the worst place to go if fishing is what you like.Game fishing of world reknown is available from many places and the other extreme would be fly fishing in the Tasmanian highland lakes. Whatever your fancy is, you will probably find it here, especially the legendary barramundi in the northern regions. Here I am at Port Stephens at the harbour entrance chancing my arm and caching the usual rubbish that seem to like my baits. Actually, I'm not that bad, but I'm not that good either! You need long rods for beach and rock fishing, shorter for estuary or river.Fly fishing is also very popular and Aussies will try it anywhere. I recently saw a TV show where they were fly fishing for schnapper in the open ocean (and catching them).Depends on what type...
