ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS AT THE...
Australia has some of the finest beaches in the world and Sydney has many of them. The Beach is a really fun place for the family to swim and surf but is not without its dangers.
BE WATER ALERT When ever swimming on Sydney beaches ALWAYS swim between the red/yellow safety flags that are placed by lifesavers.
Everyday after checking the safest part of the beach to swim..these flags are then placed and are the designated swim areas just for swimmers. The majority of city beaches are patrolled by lifeguards and are always looking for swimmers in difficulty. Australia prides itself with its longstanding tradition of surf lifesaving. If ever you are in trouble in the surf raise your right arm. This will quickly attract the attention of lifeguards on duty.
DO NOT SWIM AFTER DARK
DO NOT SWIM IF YOU ARE AFFECTED BY ALCOHOL
DO NOT SWIM IF YOU ARE AFFECTED BY NARCOTICS OR MEDICATION

VISIT THE NEWPORT ARMS HOTEL
Well, if you ever on the peninsular or out this way..drop into the Newport Arms Hotel. The Hotels beer garden overlooks pittwater and what a wonderful scenic spot it is to enjoy a beer and a burger..This I imagine would have to be the biggest outdoor "beer garden area" of any Hotel on the northside of the harbour.
Saturday nights sees literally thousands of patrons on a hot summers night. There are many bars , barbecue areas ..seating for hundreds of guests, great food served from the different restaurants and of course copious amounts of cold beer and a profusion of different mixed cocktails to be enjoyed...This is one of the best pubs in sydney.Of course if you can make it on a week day it is a pretty laid back place.
Its pretty hard to not have a few beers here especially on those hot summer days/nights...but beware if you are driving ....mobile breath tests are everywhere out here..
ALWAYS DRIVE SENSIBLY

TAKE THE BUS TO AVALON
Start your trip at Central Station in the heart of Sydney's CBD and catch the L90 bus. I'd recommend getting a window seat on the right side of the bus, because it's a beautiful bus ride going by many of Sydney's amazing northern beaches. It's one of my very favorite bus trips, going by all these beautiful beaches. The trip is about 90 minutes by bus, but worth the time due to all the fabulous scenery.
The bus will let you off right next to Avalon Beach. Across the street you can visit some of the exclusive shops or get a bite to eat. The beach is right across the street and it is beautiful. Watch the surfies or go out and catch a wave yourself!
Visit the Sydney Bus website below to get the current pricing, bus pass info & timetable for the day and time you are interested in.
Don't forget your sunscreen!
Beach Without Sand: For my surf gear when I'm in Sydney
David, the owner of this business is a really nice guy, but your probably don't see him in here quite as often as we used to.
A full range of surfgear is available form here from the big stuff surfboards, down to a block of wax for your surfboard. I always like to stock up on a couple of Beach Without Sand tee shirts to wear, especially if I'm overseas in a season that's suitable.
What to buy: Whatever your little heart needs or so desires.
If you're from overseas then I suggest a tee shirt as I've explained above, well a couple actually as all my lovely surf shirts I've bought over 6 different drives along the California coast are all wearing out now. So....., if you see something you like & can't get buy it back home then I'd strongly suggest buying a couple if the budget can stand it.
What to pay: Average price for surfgear which I do have to say these days is not real cheap at all.Related to:

Bookoccino: Quality Books, Coffee & Light Food in...
So you get the idea of books & coffee with the name above - the combination of books & capuccino.
Had been to this place many times before my first trip to the U.S. where I saw not only Borders, but other similar ones to this.
Used to regularly drop in here on the way back from surfing at North Palm Beach back B.C. (yes folks that's right - Before Children lol!)
What to buy: This is genuinely, what I would call, a "Literary" bookshop because it has many serious literary tomes rather than just the mass market published stuff for popular consumption (which I freely admit is more my style). It has those as well, but the balance goes with the more serious stuff.
It also has a neat little kids section as well, which these days is more relevant to us than it was when we used to drop in here.
What to pay: Average prices for books in Australia. If you are visiting from the U.S.A. you will be less than pleasantly surprised to find that our books are a bit dearer than over there. Having said that they are a bit cheaper than what I found in Paris & I'm sure is true all through western Europe.Related to:

No Prizes 4 Guessing what this's about...
For those of you who know me at all, you know I've been a surfer for a long time.
The photo here is south Avalon providing a decent sized right hander which only really works like this when the swell is from the right direction, as it was on the morning I took this. Please enlarge it to view it better.
My preferred surfing spot is North Palm Beach as it's not a locals only beach like some spots such as North Narrabeen can be.
Equipment: Surfoboard, bodyboard, flippers, westsuit, sunscreen, towel etc. Whatver you need to have a fun time on the beach and in the waves.Related to:
