    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Long time locals Viebke and Heidi, together with their charming staff are your hosts at this fine eatery which is built overlooking the blue waters of the Clyde River estuary at Batemans Bay. Their pancake restaurant is famous with locals and with tourists from around the world. Aussie Pancakes doubles as an art gallery, providing a colourful ambience in which to enjoy a quick delicious snack or a leisurely meal and get together with friends

    On The Pier: Waterside style

We had “an occasion” to celebrate, so we decided to move slightly upmarket for an evening restaurant meal. We had tried previously to visit “On The Pier” for a meal, but had found it full – this time we booked.

The setting is quite special, over the water of the Clyde River, just upstream of the Batemans Bay bridge. We were given the choice of ‘inside’ or ‘outside’, and were allocated prime seats out on the deck. Service was pleasant, prompt and unobtrusive throughout our meal. As the meal went on, and there was no sense of urgency, the sunset views across the water were a real bonus. All in all, it was a very pleasant relaxing evening, helped by excellent food.

Favorite Dish: Ah yes, the “food review” part of this tip. As an entrée, we chose (my description, not the restaurant’s) a plate of garlic bread and tomato/chili bread “for two”. Quite frankly, it was hard to imagine four half-slices of bread as a suitable entrée for two, nor the price of $12A as reasonable. But that was our only ‘gripe’ for the evening. We both chose pork belly with crispy skin and scallops with a pineapple and chili sauce as a main course, with a Greek salad side dish. They were excellent. Dessert was deep into “I’ll feel guilty tomorrow” territory. I might also add that there is an extremely good wine menu: I had a Brindabella Hills reisling, from the high country near Canberra.

In summary. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but the setting, service and food quality will ensure that we shall be returning for future ‘occasions’. Next time we shall probably focus on the seafood part of the menu as, at the end of our meal, I learned that this was the “Best Seafood Restaurant” category winner in the NSW Restaurants and Catering Awards for 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008, as well as the NSW Regional Award Winner for 2008!

Batemans Bay has many places to eat....from take aways to sit down meals.
Fresh seafood is in abundance, also steaks, etc.
The many restaurants serve good meals and there are three clubs, which have Bistros and dining areas.

Favorite Dish: The seafood seems to win....hands down!

if you like your sea food fresh this is the place [or should that be plaice ?] come inside and choose your piece of fish, it only takes a few minutes to cook, sample the fresh shellfish, or try one of the prawn fritters, they are really tasty

then you can choose to eat inside or outside on the netted veranda.........the nets are to keep the gulls away, they would love to share your lunch and try their best to get under the netting

its very much like eating lunch in a giant fishing net with Hitchcock`s "The Birds" being played all around you, a unique experience
