The easiest way to get to Bondi Beach is to catch a bus from the city (Circular quay, Elizabeth Street or Oxford Street).
380, 381 and L82 will take you here.

You can also take the train to Bondi Junction and take one of the buses (380, 381 or L82) from Stand A at the train station.

Catch a train to Bondi Junction from Sydney Central or Town Hall and then get on a bus to Bondi Beach. Buses leave every 10 min.

Sydney to Bondi by train

Bondi Junction Interchange

If you are in Sydney, you'll quite possibly want to visit Bondi Beach at some point. I certainly wanted to see this legendary beach while I was in Sydney in April 2006.

I asked the guy on reception at my hotel how best to get from Sydney to Bondi and he told me that the train would be far quicker than the bus. While a bus ride from central Sydney to Bondi would take up to an hour, the train journey would be a mere 15 minutes. However, the train only goes as far as Bondi Junction train station - from there, you will either have to walk 20-25 minutes down to the beach or catch a local bus. The weather was perfect, so I chose to walk.

Trains leave from Platform 24 (Suburban Trains) at Sydney's Central Station and a 1 way ticket costs 2.80 AUD (correct at April 2006).

You can purchase tickets from the counters at the station and you must then use this ticket to operate the turnstiles leading to the platform.

If you are not staying close to Central Station, there are other points where you can catch the train to Bondi. The route is as follows:

Sydney Central - Town Hall - Martin Place - Kings Cross - Edgecliff - Bondi Junction

At the time of my visit, a bus replacement service covered the Edgecliff to Bondi Junction leg of the journey, but signs at the railway station indicated that this was only a temporary measure in force over the Easter weekend.

Although I rode the busses here during my first visit, city busses seem to always be the last of a city's transit system I experience. This trip we took the 380 from Bondi Junction out to the beach and then when we were done with the beach decided to ride it to its end up in Watson's Bay. What a nice ride that is.

If you are taking a car

The bus is the way to go if you are coming to Bondi.
Otherwise parking the car can be a hassle.

Beach parking is available for $5 p/h (max rate $15)
Residential parking meters are $3.50 p/h (max 2 hour ticket- more tickets can be purchased, they just have to be updated every 2 hours).

A temporary permit can be obtained from Waverly Council (Customer Service Centre, 55 Spring St, Bondi Junction, 2022. Ph: 02 9369 8000) 3 months is $312 and 12 months is $1250.

The cheapest way is to 'borrow' a resident’s beach parking permit ($50 per year from the council) which enables you to park at the beach for as long as you want without paying a thing.
It's a magnetic swipe card that you swipe when entering/exiting the car park.
If you are caught by a parking ranger (unlikely, but occasionally it may happen) they will confiscated the pass and it will cost $50 to get it back again.

Otherwise there can be all day free parking near Bondi Lawn Bowling Club (1 Warners Ave). It's about a 10min (walk in a straight line) to the beach.
Old South Head Rd (heading NE towards Rose Bay) is also good for all day parking, but is a bit more of a trek to get to the beach.

The other option for just the day is the underground car park at the rear of The Swiss Grand (148 Curlewis Street, off Campbell Pde) which is open 24hrs. Weekends have a flat rate of $30, while Monday-Friday is $13 p/h (max rate is $30) [http://www.secureparking.com.au/DisplayCarPark.aspx?carparkid=152]

Visiting Bondi is as simple as catching the City Rail to Bondi Junction. From Bondi Junction buses leave for areas of Bondi, Watsons Bay, Coogee and back to the city. The buses are a quick and easy way to get to your destination and provide a nice view.
