In 1927, a rail fence was constructed around the boundary of the oval. The Bowral Council purchased Glebe Park in 1934. Four years later, the Bowral Cricket Club suggested to the Council that the cricket ground be known as Bradman Oval. They know have the occassional international tourist match and local schoolboy's play at the historic ground. Don bradman lived within a 100 yards of the Oval when he played there. He continued to live near the oval and travelled the 180k's to Sydney every weekend to play Grade cricket. One of the natural scenic wonders not far from Bowral is Morton National Park. This covers the escarpment that drops off to the coast and features numerous waterfalls and a continuous sheer cliff. One of the three most famous that has the main visitor centre is Fitzroy Falls. Here you can walk along either the eastern or western rim from Fitzroy. If it's your first time then I would suggest the western rim. This puts you immediately on top of three waterfalls and the light is generally better for photography. Leave a Comment

If Bowral has flogged one thing over the years, it's its association with a man called Donald Bradman. If you're not into cricket then you may be forgiven for not knowing of what I speak but, in Australia, there was a time when he was near to God. His record of averaging 99.94 runs per innings has left all other batsmen before or since in his wake. He was known simply as "The Don" in Australia and, in surely one of the most extraordinary sporting headlines of all time a famous English newpaper came out with the banner "He's Out", when Bradman was batting in a test in England. When your fame reaches a level where they don't even bother to print your name, you'd better believe that you've made it. Bowral have claimed him as their own as he lived not far from the oval at one stage though he wasn't born there and he spent a lot of his time in South Australia. He was actually born in Cootamundra (southern N.S.W.) and ended up being Australia's, and indeed the world's, undisputed finest ever batsman. Donald Bradman (later Sir), played his first cricket in Bowral as a boy and the town proudly claims him as their own and, they have the Bradman Museum so, if you want to brush up on this sporting legend's history, then there is no finer place to do it. It's open 7 days a week except Xmas Day and the tour takes about 90 minutes. Leave a Comment Address: St. Jude Street, BowralPhone: 02 4862 1247

As regular readers will know, I do love to get out and walk the streets and check out what makes the place tick. Bowral is rewarding if you choose to do that exercise. Mansions tucked behind ornate fences or tree-lined driveways, classical public buildings fronting the streets or well manicured gardens. The Simon and St. Jude Church is in Bendooley Street, with the Rectory (shown in second pic and Intro photo) on the corner of Bendooley and Boolwey Streets. All of which are a feast for the eye. Go try it sometime. Leave a Comment Phone: (02) 4861 6944 (for church)Website: office@bowralanglican.org.au (for church)

If you're into cuisine, then do yourself a favour and head for the Elephant Boy Cafe. This is not food, it's an experience. When I dined there it was narrow and absolutely reeked - of atmosphere. I loved it, would have enjoyed it without food but, the food was superb as well. The old books lining the shelves beside your table, the flat screen TV flickering images of pre WWII newsreels, the director's chairs with cushions, I love it all. It's one of those places that give you boasting rights. When you go to Bowral, you simply have to have one meal there. Having said that, we had special food at other places but what Elephant Boy had is aura, there it reigns supreme. Leave a Comment Address: 329 Bong Bong StreetPhone: (02) 48911393

1.25 acres of long herbaceous borders, a potager pond and stream garden. Tree peonies are the main attraction of this unusual garden which is one of the four available for public viewing. We spoke to two ladies who had visited and they said that they had spent more time chatting to the owners about their B&B and had a wonderful time. Life is meant to be enjoyed, whatever the attraction Leave a Comment Address: 23 Webb Street, Mittagong

All these pictures were taken in Corbett Park, unquestionably the centre piece for Tulip Time in Bowral. In addition to the flowers, the park at times is littered (and I used the word advisedly) with corporate tents and arty crafty type stalls. In some way they detract from the atmosphere, in other ways they enhance it, it depends on your point of view. However, since they're not there all the time you do get the opportunity to see the lovely park with or without them. Should you wish to avoid them I would suggest mid week would be a good time. Pics 1 and 3 are interesting inasmuch as they feature John Olsen's "Octopus's Garden" (with sculpture). John Olsen is a noted artist, having won Australia's most prestigious art prize for portraits, the Archibald. The significant cypress tree in pic 3 (Cypressus Tarulosa) is dedicated to Alderman Blacket "a lover of trees". Another pleasing things I found was that Marylyn has divided the different styles so subtley. You'll be eased on to a small path, often distracted by pleasant borders, and then, suddenly, you're in a different world yet the journey itself is worthy of note, as shown in these pictures.
