    Visiting Art Galleries

    by Kate-Me Written Mar 14, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You absolutely must visit some of the Art Galleries. There are over 20 of them (at least) scattered all over town, and I loved almost all of them.
The art is very distinctive and a lot of it was very different to any other paintings I'd seen elsewhere in Victoria. A very particular, bold, outback style.

Free entry too. We spent about 3 days in Broken Hill and still didn't manage to see all the galleries.

    The Broken Hill Sculpture Symposium

Just ten minutes drive and ten minutes walk will put you in the sculpture park.
A Gosford sculptor by the name of Laurence Beck suggested to the local mayor that everyone knew Broken Hill for painting, how about some sculpture?
Mayor Black thought it was a good idea, the Tourism Development Manager Neil McGarry suggested the hill and, when Laurence had concurred after seeking guidance from an eagle (well, he is an artist, what do you expect?) the project got under way.
53 tonnes of stone was transported to the site free of charge by local contractors.
Beds from the hospital, tents from Menindee and various appliances from the local council were supplied.
Volunteers from the State Emergency Service supplied two meals a day.
A retired blacksmith, Allan Carr, kept their tools sharpened.
When money ran out, the community whipped up $7,000 in a couple of days and on it went.
What a wonderful story of what you can achieve when you all pull together!
The 12 figures from international and local artists are now an Aussie icon.
The one shown here is a tragic reminder of the Georgian horse, all slaughtered at Stalin's request. If you didn't dislike him before, you will after you read that story.

Two notable parks to see in the CBD: Sturt park (where the titanic memorial is) and Lions rotary park (with weird art creations).

    Do the silverton test

    by gonzo747 Written Sep 21, 2005

If you're in silverton. Have a drink at the Silverton hotel and ask for "doing the silverton test".
That's all I have to say.
