These banana trees are at the Big Banana... You'll see lots of them all around Coffs Harbour too...they are everywhere! :) I had never seen a banana tree before visiting Coffs Harbour... Leave a Comment

I ended up in Sawtell in the Best Western Motel for two reasons: a- I had been delayed at Coffs doing a call and b- the particular motel had a special on. One of the great advantages of this establishment is that it is within 100 metres of the sand. Though you can't actually see the beach, you can hear the surf and it's just across the road and through the scrub and you're there. So, it's not an unpopular pastime for locals to take a morning stroll.
Thus it was that I joined them and the beauty of this beach is that it's made for walking, particularly at low tide. Lots of nice firm sand and a lovely couple of beaches interspersed with headlands where you can climb and take in the view. Early mornings are definitely my favourite time to be surfside, even back in the days when I was an avid board rider. Something about the clean atmosphere that seems to pervade the air. The crispness of the swells kissed by an offshore breeze as they crash into oblivion and dissipate into the rips. I've never ceased enjoying it. If only you didn't have to get out of bed so early! Just south of Coffs if you have a car and don't mind driving for half an hour, there's one of my favourite little spots on the northern N.S.W. coast. Valla Beach is really more than one. There's a beach either side of the headland and, unlike Coffs Harbour, they haven't ripped down the surrounding bush (yet). It still retains that 50's village atmosphere that represents all that people used to go up to the north coast for.
Lovely sandy beaches, wonderful park just behind and a local general store where you can buy most things you'd need on a lazy holiday. I also fondly remember being out in a 3ft swell with near perfect waves and being the only one out, but that's another story. It's only just off the highway and, if you're looking for a swim in summer, I can highly recommend this place. The photo is of the headland walkway (you'll have to blow it up) which is one of the lovely scenic walks on the northern N.S.W. coast. Leave a Comment

South of Coffs and in between Scotts Head and Stuarts Point lies a wonderful area called Yarrahappini. Now locked up as a National Park it has some wonderful rainforest and expansive views over the hinterland.
This is the road to Yarrahappini and it shows the southernmost extent of bananas, Any further south and they're not profitable. Not only that, they don't grow very well either! The lush vegetation of the area always makes for a pleasant detour off the highway. It's a loop road and only adds a couple of kilometres to your journey but the scenery makes it worthwhile. Whilst dining with fellow VTers unravelau and Tapis Volant one day at the classy Novotel by the beach I couldn't help but notice the proliferation of colour near the main entrance. The burst of orange was what caught my eye and so it was out with the tripod and off with the lens cap. I hope you enjoy the result - It's a Spathodea Campanulata or, in layman's terms, African Tulip Tree or Flame of The Forest. Leave a Comment
