Springtime at the Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • Last week I took a trip around the gardens to check out the spring flowers in bloom....... Now I wish to go back again because we have had 2 full days of rain and I am sure that if it was possible, they would be even more beautiful to-day. The flowers in my garden and saying a big thank you to the rain. Have you ever noticed how well your plants come on with pure rain water as opposed to the tap?

THE BIG BANANA Still not 100% sure if this is a must see or tourist trap! But my kids liked it & we had some fun on the toboggan ride. In fact we had fun on it a couple of times. If you want to know about the growing a harvesting of bananas then you can take a walking tour that shows you all the stages through to packaging. The photo with this tip shows my girls near a really big Tallowood stump, not far away from the actual Big Banana itself. Goodness knows how old this tree must have been when it was cut down. What a shame! There are other tours you can do & attractions to visit if you have the time. We wanted to do the Hillclimb train & railway ride to the top, but got there just a bit late after our toboggan rides. If only we'd done it the other way around. There's an indoor snow slope, but I personally wouldn't waste my time or money on it as we've tried that before at Mt Thebarton in Adelaide & it was like trying to ski on ice, not snow. If you have kids from little ones to big ones it's worth a visit, but it'll cost you depending on what activities/attractions you visit/participate in.

Strangely enough, Coffs Harbour is not actually at the harbour - the township is maybe a km inland. Over the years, the harbour has been built up with rock walls and now hosts a large fishing fleet, as well as private yachts. It is well worth the time to visit and stroll around looking at the boats, the seabirds, the general activity, the views back over the township and the beaches. When you've had enough, there are restaurants nearby where you can relax over a coffee. First photo: fishing boats in Coffs Harbour Second photo: looking back over the harbour to the town, with apartments visible on the hill.

There is no shortage of marvellous sandy white beaches at Coffs Harbour, suitable for either fishing or swimming. The photo with this tip was taken from the harbour breakwater, to the north of the port and shows the beach and some of the small islands.

    Coffs Harbour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Check out this town, great to spend some days here. We stayed at the Opal Cove hotel, great place, a few km. out of town. From here we did a 4WD trip into a rainforest, went to the aquarium and relaxed at the beach.

    GEORGES GOLD MINE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Georges gold mine is situated in the Orara gold field where gold was first found in 1881 the George of this mine was George Ellis who was involved in the gold mining of this area for many years, coincidentally the current owner is also called George, and he can remember George Ellis who died in 1948 Our guide for the visit was the current Georges son-in-law [ this is a real family business ] and he took us into the tunnel of the Bayfield gold mine on the property. At first it seems to be a very small mine, but when you consider that all the tunneling through solid rock was done by only one man it is an amazing achievement, sadly this mine yielded a very small amount of gold bearing ore, the rich seam that many believe is still here remains undiscovered to the present day

    TUNNELING
  • Tip Rating:
  • Gold mining looks like hard work ! the seams of gold are in veins of quartz, holes had to be dug into the rock to enable the tunnel to be blasted with dynamite, if the miner couldnt afford dynamite the entire tunnel ad to be dug out with hammer and chisel, all this with no guarantee that a rich vein of gold would be found, add to that the fact that he was working in dark, damp conditions it makes one realise what a chronic sickness "gold fever" really is in 1923 George Ellis sank a 65ft shaft, then tunneled out 40ft from the bottom of it, in one year he removed 8 tonne of rock from the mine which gave only 3 1/2 ounces of gold valued at just over A$26, thats only 50 cents per week before expenses

    THE BUNKER
  • Tip Rating:
  • Originally a WW11 bunker this was restored and preserved and is now a cartoon gallery, this is an amazing gallery, not only is it housed in a fantastic setting but its probably the only place you hear chuckles, guffaws and outright hoots of laughter from visitors there are historical cartoons, wartime cartoons, sporting cartoons and cartoons from the present day, and a wonderful collection of caricatures..........you are even invited to draw your own cartoon there is a small selection of prints and greeting cards for sale, the Bunker is open daily from 10 till 4, admission is A$2 for adults and A$1 for children
