THE BUNKER
  • Tip Rating:
  • Originally a WW11 bunker this was restored and preserved and is now a cartoon gallery, this is an amazing gallery, not only is it housed in a fantastic setting but its probably the only place you hear chuckles, guffaws and outright hoots of laughter from visitors

there are historical cartoons, wartime cartoons, sporting cartoons and cartoons from the present day, and a wonderful collection of caricatures..........you are even invited to draw your own cartoon

there is a small selection of prints and greeting cards for sale, the Bunker is open daily from 10 till 4, admission is A$2 for adults and A$1 for children

    THE STAMPER BATTERY
  • Tip Rating:
  • Stamper Batteries crush the gold bearing rocks to release the gold, the powdery gold then sticks to mercury on copper plates, where it forms an amalgam with the mercury, this amalgam is then heated in a furnace, the mercury evaporates [ it is collected and reused ] leaving the gold behind, this is then poured into ingot moulds ready for weighing and selling

George Ellis owned two stamper batteries, so not only could he process his own ore, but that of other miners

one of the stampers is still in working order, and is demonstrated twice daily, it is extremely noisy, the other stamper laying nearby will be restored in the future

The dolphin show at Coffs Harbour's Oceanarium
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a couple of shows each day check site for times. The dolphins do their tricks and entertain the crowd then some seals are encouraged to introduce themselves to the audience ................ they do this by kissing everone that they come up to. ( See native travelogue). Anyway it is a wonderful family show that you shouldn't miss.

You must see at least one sunrise from the Jetty
  • Tip Rating:
  • Coffs Harbour is not the most easterly point of Australia's coastline but it still sees the sun rise pretty early none the less. I never cease to be amazed at the whole scene, i.e., of any sunrise from the Jetty, and the changes that occur in a short space of time. I have seen many photographers with their tripods line up before dawn in preparation to take a pic of the sunrise that I am lucky enough to see occasionally.

Spend some time with the pelicans
  • Tip Rating:
  • The pelican colony in Coffs Harbour is quite large. The pelican man, Tony, a man that has fed them every morning for a number of years claims upwards of 30 in a quiet time. They remind me of swans because they seem just as majestic on the water, and aloof to the same degree. They are such an unusual shape and despite everything can do perfect three point landings even if their take-off are a little ungainly.

  • Tip Rating:
  • the lookout point gives stunning views over the Orara valley, you cannot see Coffs Harbour as Mount Coramba hides it, but you an see South Solitary island in the sea, the villages o Glenreagh and Nana Glen, and on a clear day we are told you can see the television tower on Mount Moombil

the altitude is 2000 feet above sea level, you can see for miles and miles..........

there is a picnic area here with a barbeque

The big banana announces a family entertainment area (one of many) in Coffs Harbour. As the name would suggest, bananas have always been a big crop in the area and in recent years compatible farming with avacados has come into being. Not that I know much about farming but it would appear that a suitable climate is important as is hillside planting for the bananas. I don't think that the avacados are so fussy

    GEORGE ELLIS` HOUSE
  • Tip Rating:
  • this house was built in 1922, and was the home of George Ellis and his wife, it is filled with furniture and artefacts of the time, many donated by local people
it is amazingly small, not the sort of place you would imagine a prosperous gold miner to own, but perhaps George was too busy mining to extend

Coffs Harbour is a major coastal resort town, also noted for its banana plantations and its fishing. It is beautifully located where the mountains tumble down to the sea, 558 km north-east of Sydney and 3 metres above sea-level.

There are quite a lot of thing to see like the beautiful beaches, Coffs Harbour Historical Museum, Botanic Garden, Old Jetty Area, the Zoo and of course the Big Banana.
