    Coogee, Not Town

    by cjg1 Written Mar 14, 2012

This is one I have trouble with as an outsider. The suburbs of Sydney are referred to by name. If you say you're going into town, they assume you mean Sydney. When going into the more down town areas of suburbs, you are supposed to say you're going Coogee/etc.

    Surfboats on the Sand

If you visit any Australian beach during the summer then you might be lucky enough to see what I've mentioned above in one of two contexts.

Firstly, & the way I saw them at Coogee Beach yesterday morning November 6, is when they are training. I was lucky enough to see 2 local crews doing their early morning training. You must have a bit of a squiz at my 2 travelogues featuring Crew 1 & Crew 2 where you'll see the difference in skill level & experience of the 2 crews. Crew 1 is much better. They got out & in with no trouble at all. Crew 2 lost their Sweep as they were getting out through the surf ( & it was fairly small) & kept rowing so he had to swim, with his big oar, about 30 metres out where they hauled him into the boat. Then when they were coming in after they picked up a wave the sweep couldn't keep the boat straight & they ended up side on with their boat almost getting swamped. Their photos are a bit more exciting actually. Have a look at the travelogues. BTW, a "sweep" is the guy who stands (all the rowers sit) at the back & uses his oar over the back of the surfboat to steer the boat while the rowers provide the power to pull the boat along with their rowing.

The other way you might see surfboats in action, & this is really exciting, especially if there's a good sized surf running, is at a "Surf Carnival". Lots of events occur at a surf carnival, but I think the surf boat races are by far & away the most spectacular. So if you are visiting the Australian coastline suring summer time then ask at the local Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) if, & when there will be a surf carnival on.

My photo here is when the surfboats had been draggged down onto the sand just up from the water so if you want to see them in action then check the travelogues!
